Seems like a lot for too long.

I'd have expected more like 4 million AAV at that length. But then again, that's probably about what Rakell would have gotten in FA.

And this just makes it all the more likely Malkin isn't coming back. Geno says he's testing FA and the Pens sign Rakell same day? Yeah, Geno is gone.

I'm listening to The Hockey News podcast mentioned Pittsburgh as a possible landing spot for Gaudreau if Malkin leaves because they think of all contenders the Pens have the most cap space. So there may be mutual interest because the Pens are still a contender.

But now With Rakell resigned I think that idea goes out the window.
 
Trochek & Rakell is 2/3rds of a pretty good 2-way 2nd line.

Would lessen Carter’s D zone starts which seems needed & not an option if Geno is here.

Man that Jack Johnson buyout is super inconvenient right now. Even if they trade Pettersson, things are going to be kind of tight if they want to rebuild that second line.

So what's the cap/roster situation look like now with Rakell back at $5 million AAV?

It feels like this was kind of already hashed out between the FO and Rakell's camp, and they just tabled the deal until they knew one way or another what was up with Geno. Now, with Geno reportedly being all whiny bitch about things and going to FA, the team just kinda finished the Rakell deal.
