Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

I always like when I see people dunking on someone while I can't see who they're responding to. Makes a fun little guessing game of "who on my ignore list is saying stupid shit?"

I still ultimately think Malkin comes back because I don't think anyone will be offering more total money than the Penguins allegedly just offered. Someone will beat the Penguins AAV, but I can't see any other team being willing to offer Malkin 4 years at more money.

If someone offers Malkin $8.5 million over 3 years or $7 million over 4 years, they can have him. I just don't think that's reasonable for anyone else to offer when they don't have the same connection to Malkin that Pittsburgh does.
I think somebody out there will hit those thresholds, for sure. I just don't think it'll be a team within a mile of a playoff spot.

A little sad at how many people are blaming Malkin for the negotiations going sour. Dude has done everything the franchise has asked of him for years, has played in Sid's shadow when he could have chased a 1c role elsewhere, has won conn smythes, cups, scoring titles. Has played with lesser wingers his entire career here. Has played injured all the time and played his heart out anyways.

Yeah and if they do, that falls firmly into "okay, you have fun with him" territory

If Malkin leaves Pittsburgh, I think it's going to be someone offering him a crazy amount of money for the caliber of player he is. I don't think Malkin will leave if other teams are only offering him like $7 million a year for 3 years. If a team offers him $8 million a year or more on a 3 years deal, or maybe even goes to an insane AAV on a short term deal, yeah thanks for the memories Geno.

I'm way more annoyed that the Pens extended a QO to Kapanen than the fact that no deal seems to be in sight between Geno's camp and the FO--likely sending him to FA.

Can't f***ing stand Kap, and this team's gonna turn him into some four year experiment in futility, aren't they? Damn.

I am pretty confident somebody will give him something like $28 million over 4 years. It'll just be, like, Detroit or Dallas or Buffalo.

There are always two sides to a negotiation, though. Malkin came out at the end of the season and gave the whole "I don't care about money, I'm a rich guy" talk, and now it looks like he's walking in free agency over the total amount of money offered in the deal.

This is going to sound weird, but I think both sides are at fault here but neither side has any blame. Malkin is justified to want to get as much money as he can, while Hextall is justified in being unwilling to pay a 36 year old Malkin coming off of 2 injury prone and poor seasons a lot of money. At the same point, both sides should have basically had the "you should just come to an agreement" moment by now. With Hextall, it's "Malkin is a franchise legend and it would be awful to see him in any other jersey". With Malkin, it's "you said you didn't care about money, so why are you not signing whatever the Penguins offered?".

Empo and dummy are Madden fan boys. They are just parroting what ever he's saying, don't think most Pens fans feel that way

Maybe deep down what Malkin really wants is a new challenge. Perhaps to see if he can win a Cup playing as a #1C.

Mark Messier did the same when he left Edmonton. He was quoted as saying he felt he needed a new challenge. Sometimes a change of scenery is good for some guys careers.

by the time Malkin is hearing what other teams are offering, I believe it will be too late…Pens are gonna have to pounce on Trocheck like a rabid dog lest they get stuck with ERod…lol

I think this has played out exactly how it was going to. Sign the guys you need and show exactly what you have to give. Geno is probably about the term and feels like he's to be taken like guys much younger than him.

He might get offers from other teams, but he might not get the term like the one he'd get from the team with emotional attachments.

Watch them be a little higher cap hits for 2/3 years.

I think Malkin will be able to tell whether the offers are much more than he'd be getting in UFA extremely quickly in free agency.

If you give Malkin half a day to get his best UFA offers and then say "we're going to make an offer to Trocheck if you don't sign with us by July 14th", you shouldn't any any problems with signing Trocheck.

I couldn't give a shit if Madden got hit by a bus tomorrow. I've never listened to a minute of his show and never will.

I think the reality is closer to you hug some Geno body pillow to fall asleep at night and as a grown person, the whole "I just want my Geno back at all costs" stuff makes me physically cringe.

Geno's camp has been playing gullible yinzers like a fiddle all off-season with the sob stories about feeling unwanted, and the whole "I'm a rich guy, money doesn't matter" bullshit. Team's dead in the water with or without Geno because the organization can't pick a lane and commit to it. The only thing that's changed if Geno walks is that people won't be able to bitch and whine about a 2C who misses 30% of the year annually not getting the team's best winger combo.

Idk..Trocheck is going to be in high demand too…

The only slight shot at it working is we may Trocheck immediately. Geno realizes only Detroit or Seattle will give him a bit more and he comes back saying he wants the 6M.

Hextall whips his Petts for a pick Trade out and signs G. Everyone is happy.

Realistically the entire back portion of my story doesn't happy but we get Vincent from my Alma mater Upper St. Clair so that's a win?

I doubt Trocheck is going to sign on day 1 in free agency though so I'm not super worried about it.

I wouldn't give Malkin a ton of time to decide, but I'd be fine with giving him until the end of July 13th.
I wouldn't be surprised if Trocheck signs in the first few hours to a 6x6 deal.

I think it's pretty unrealistic to think Geno won't get a deal better than 6x4 if he tests FA. I also think it's pretty significant that his camp publicly said they're breaking off negotiations and they're gonna test their options in FA. That's not something you can really backpedal on.

I also gotta wonder if Hextall and FSG are the kind guys who will take Geno's 11th hour change of heart and tell him to f*** off, offer's been pulled. GL in Detroit, Dallas, Buffalo, Seattle, etc.

I'm sorry but you've lost any and all rational thought for absolutely no reason. Before becoming a ball of emotions over a hockey player leaving, why don't you, at the bare minimum, actually wait for him to leave?
Never said he was leaving, but the whole situation even if it does work out (which I think it will) is laughable.
