Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

He might have developed a taste for winning though, in which case he'd be handcuffing himself to a couple of corpses there.

Pittsburgh's not so far from the ol' stomping grounds for him, I'm sure he has a fancy car for quick visits to family & friends.
I think Philly's a dumpster fire, but NJ is building toward being a pretty solid team, tbh. They're still a few pieces and likely years away from really contending, but running with a Gaudreau-Hughes-Bratt top line is a real, real solid line.

Pittsburgh's a good 600 miles away from his home turf, iirc. He's from South Jersey. And I don't think the Pens are a premiere destination in terms of a team being on the up and up, and he'll have to leave multiple millions on the table in terms of his AAV.

Pretty much approaching absolute zero chance Gaudreau ends up here.

What if, and hear me out yinzers, this is all a galaxy brain plan by Hextall and Geno's camp working in tandem?

Agree on a deal but don't sign it, leak to the public that Geno's testing FA. Buys Hextall the cap freedom and time to throw $10.5 million AAV at Gaudreau as soon as FA opens up. Once Gaudreau's signed, Hextall uses picks/prospects to rid the team of Zucker, Petts and Dumo's cap hits. Geno re-signs with the 6x4 deal that's been reported. Trade a 1st (lotto protected) and Poulin for a LD to replace Dumo.

That's probably how the roster plays out. It doesn't really matter, in terms of the big picture/team results, whether Geno, Trocheck, Strome, or some other dumpster is in the 2C spot. They're not going far.

That's the big issue. Not that Geno's potentially gonna walk. That the team's unwilling or uninterested in legitimately changing things up in order to actually line up with their PR-speak bullshit about still being 100% in on competing for the Cup.

You need a map and some trousers. 6 hours yeah, not 600 miles.

I do agree Jonny hockey isn’t coming to Pittsburgh. If there was any hope of that Rakell would not have been signed.

It was the Hockey News that put that one out there. But yeah, Rakell signing would put that to rest.

Yeah, I really don't get why people are just automatically assuming the Penguins offered less than $6 million just because Malkin didn't sign. The only evidence we had was Seravalli saying they made the 4 year offer and were hoping to get Malkin at around the same AAV as Letang.

People just want to blame Hextall for Malkin not re-signing and testing the UFA market.

And you’ve repeatedly speculated and blamed Malkin. We just don’t know what’s really going on.

Oh no, he was offered $5.75 million instead of $6 million! That totally makes it Hextall's fault for Malkin leaving!

I think people here need to just realize that Hextall basically caved into Malkin's demands and Malkin shut off all negotiations after he did that, instead of continuing to talk to Hextall.
Dude you are literally making shit up. “Caved to Malkins demands”. It’s a negotiation. What a joke post.

Next time Geno stays healthy and plays like a top-10 player at his position, he'll have a leg to stand on when it comes to wanting a deal similar to Letang. /shrug
But top 10 centers aren’t making $6mm so not sure why that’s relevant. Letangs only making 6mm because he got stupid term.

Which chance are you referring to that they missed to sign jagr?
Oh so many of the posters here complaining about Geno were incredibly mad that Shero famously refused to give Jagr a competitive offer (who was at that point in his career a power play specialist who famously demanded 1st line ice time) in order to keep Tyler Kennedy. GMs are dumb, superstars are dumb, fans are dumb. We're all a human centipede of stupidity.

It's kind of amazing frankly.

What is there to even offer at this point? Is Malkin's agent seriously leaking to the media to get the Penguins to offer more when they're like $1m-$2m apart on a 4 year deal?

If this is JP Barry trying to pressure Hextall more, he's an idiot for doing that. This kind of stunt over $250k-$500k a year at most is absurd.
Why? Because you said so? Your takes are so biased

What happened to the whole "Hextall wants to move out salary" thing? Why is Pettersson and his $4 million to play on the bottom pairing still a Penguin?

Free agency starts Wednesday. Doesn't do much good to clear space after all the best guys have already been signed.

Yeah but I mean... Jags was never ever going to sign here. Did he not sign for the same or less in Philly?

There are always two sides to a negotiation, though. Malkin came out at the end of the season and gave the whole "I don't care about money, I'm a rich guy" talk, and now it looks like he's walking in free agency over the total amount of money offered in the deal.

This is going to sound weird, but I think both sides are at fault here but neither side has any blame. Malkin is justified to want to get as much money as he can, while Hextall is justified in being unwilling to pay a 36 year old Malkin coming off of 2 injury prone and poor seasons a lot of money. At the same point, both sides should have basically had the "you should just come to an agreement" moment by now. With Hextall, it's "Malkin is a franchise legend and it would be awful to see him in any other jersey". With Malkin, it's "you said you didn't care about money, so why are you not signing whatever the Penguins offered?".
I agree, both sides are justified in what they are doing.

I also think both sides will regret this in the long run unless the Penguins win a cup without Malkin.

Can't wait for us to miss on Malkin and Trocheck and then bring back ERod for 5 years at 4mil.
I'd be shocked if that occurred. It'll be an interesting 36 hrs though, looking forward to it. Amazing how so many have given up hope so easily.

Eventually I'll die. And even though I'm seemingly in good health Maybe I should start to panic now.

Jagr was absolutely 100% clear in the Czech media that he was going to sign for whoever would pay him the most AND cater to his ego, he was less clear in the English-language press. People here believed that he was signing here any day now, and they were crushed when he went to Philly.

Come to think of it, this whole thing has that feeling that people were so hurt by Jags leaving that they want any superstar gone so they don't go through that pain again.
