Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

I really would love to get Burakovsky! He'd me awesome. We'd have to move salary out though, today needs to be the day to do so.

Jagr was absolutely 100% clear in the Czech media that he was going to sign for whoever would pay him the most AND cater to his ego, he was less clear in the English-language press. People here believed that he was signing here any day now, and they were crushed when he went to Philly.

Jagr watch 2: for the front office. Maybe assistant GM to Hextall. Haha

Honestly can't believe the Leafs did this.
But there's another side to it. Incredible work from Dorion to repair the damage. It essentially cost them a 3rd and 25% retention.

So what will it cost to unload Zucker? We can do it for sure.
Palat, Marchment, Strome, Niederreiter, Trocheck etc...

AHHHH the possibilities of the top 6...
So close yet so far

Yeah but we get Rak for 3/4 of the season more. That's like an acquisition for the top 6.

We also might get him for more than 20 minutes of the playoffs too!
There are always two sides to a negotiation, though. Malkin came out at the end of the season and gave the whole "I don't care about money, I'm a rich guy" talk, and now it looks like he's walking in free agency over the total amount of money offered in the deal.

This is going to sound weird, but I think both sides are at fault here but neither side has any blame. Malkin is justified to want to get as much money as he can, while Hextall is justified in being unwilling to pay a 36 year old Malkin coming off of 2 injury prone and poor seasons a lot of money. At the same point, both sides should have basically had the "you should just come to an agreement" moment by now. With Hextall, it's "Malkin is a franchise legend and it would be awful to see him in any other jersey". With Malkin, it's "you said you didn't care about money, so why are you not signing whatever the Penguins offered?".

Tbh, if you believe the media, and it jives close enough to my perceptions of likely reality that I don't see why I wouldn't, this isn't really about the money at this point so much as what it represents - respect. Malkin doesn't feel respected, he doesn't feel wanted, he's going somewhere where that's going to happen.
I think Malkin will be able to tell whether the offers are much more than he'd be getting in UFA extremely quickly in free agency.

If you give Malkin half a day to get his best UFA offers and then say "we're going to make an offer to Trocheck if you don't sign with us by July 14th", you shouldn't any any problems with signing Trocheck.

Given how UFA seems to go these days, I wouldn't be surprised if he knew a fair amount of the offers right now.

Exactly, JP Barry is a seasoned veteran in this league and likely has a good sense of what the offers out there are for Malkin.

QOs have really changed in the last few CBAs, which is kind of fascinating to me. I would have thought those rules would pretty much never change.

So we got $10.3M and need 4 Forwards to meet the requirements of a 23-man roster. Getting closer.

Those will be Geno/alternative, Kap, and two dudes who kill it in camp. Puustinen + Nylander is my hope. Has there been word on Boyle?
I don't think we need to look to free agency for league minimum guys like in seasons past.
ERod has priced himself out if we're not trading Zuck. Ditto for Heinen. 👋
I'm not optimistic that Petts will be moved either. He's not that bad anyway.

So yeah, unless there's a trade coming we may not have to wait much longer to see our fully formed team.

I must say though...
I really like the distribution of our cap among the positions.

$50.2M Forwards (presumably, or very close)
$25.075M Defense
$5.3M Goaltending

And the dead cap we don't like to talk about...

That's close to perfect. Nice, Hex.

I do like the mix so far. If we can trade Pets or Dumo, we'd be in an insane spot and we can infuse some youth. I'd be heppppppppeh

Btw - Carter blows but he could be used as an expensive 4C and like PK specialist. I wouldn't even be against having a unique 3C if Geno walks and we pick someone else up. I'm interested in how it all goes.

Zucker/Rak are not bad mates for someone. Jake/Rust. Not bad not bad.

We said that in 15/16 too and now guys are getting insane contracts that were shit prospects.

I am just saying let a few give it a go... and let's see what happens. We have a very solid top 6 IF we get a decent 2c.
Well, who? Trocheck ain't that. We do not have the asset to get Miller. Kadri is going to be too expensive and we likely burned the bridge with Geno.

It is going to be an underwhelming option, most likely.

When they signed Letang, they made it clear they wanted to contend. They won't try bums unless they have too. Let's not glamorize 15/16, Rust and Sheary got their chance because of injuries.

I think high end prospects are shit. We have plenty of cheap grinder types to use, though.

If Geno walks that is out of our control. I'm okay walking into the season and looking for a trade. TB/Carter can be a very crappy bandaid fix just for the first so many games. If Erod doesn't get money on open market... for like 1m he can play 3/4C

As long as we have cap space and a 1st round pick... we have the ability to get something!

If Geno walks, why did we bother resigning Rakell instead of making a push for a legit game changer? It just seems like a foolish own goal to me.

The only way signing Rakell to that contract, plus Letang's insane term, make sense to me is if we bring in someone at least Geno's calibre and frankly, most of the names minus Gadreau and maybe Miller bandied about here are not.

We have all teh cap space in the world and can move a dman for a 2C if we wanted. And that center could be around Rak/Zuck. It's not a bad spot to be in.

The only game changer I see is Johnny hockey and he’s gonna cost 10+ mil.
Which is better than paying 10.5 million for Zucker and Rakell and then 6 million to Trocheck. :dunno:

We say every year they need to move a d-man and they never do. I'm sorry if I sound cynical, but I do not have any faith in this club actually doing that.
