Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

Just came here real quick to say:

  • Malkin may be doing this as a negotiation tactic. It may not be over for you Pens fans. Hextall plays hard ball, Geno may be doing the same.
  • Malkin *may* actually be a really greedy dude right now. It's possible it is Hextall saying "You're really not worth that much" - and he's right (perhaps).
  • If we laid out Malkin's age, games played, points, etc. and scrubbed out his name...I'm not sure you'd be on-board with re-signing X-player at the price Malkin wants, too.
    • Like if it's 4 years, 8 mill...can you all say you're really on board with that kind of money and term for Malkin?

I'm gonna throw this out there - and don't freak:
  • Giroux would be a better signing at that term/money given Geno's injury history. Giroux plays LW more, but can be a C still. (I am not saying you should sign him - I'm saying there's other options than Malkin you may actually be happier with a few years from now).
Giroux would be fine and would even fit the PP given he's a righty but he will never in a million years sign with the Pens imo. Too much bad blood there historically, and even if he has gotten over that, he won't want to tarnish his legacy as a Flyer. He's not the Jagr type where he doesn't give a shit and will play anywhere. I think G cares about his legacy as a Flyer.

My take is if the org isnt leaking anything to put pressure on Geno then they are the ones coming up short.

Hextall doesn't leak things in negotiations until it's all but sewn up. He didn't in Philly.

For those saying this isn’t on Hextall, I want to remind you that he rushed and didn’t piss around to sign Jeff f***ing Carter to an extension yet decided to play hardball with the 3rd or 4th best player in the history of the franchise

How does one affect the other if Malkin isn't willing to come to a reasonable contract given his age and injuries?

Everyone is blaming Hextall without knowing if Geno is being stubborn and it's down to him
I think its fair to say people can assign blame all around in this situation. It's very very disappointing all over. But if, as is rumored, he's been given what he wanted (a fourth year) and still wants to test the market then that part is on Malkin, and not Hextall.

The part I blame Hextall for is deciding that its a "ride or die" situation with Letang, extending him forever, but not doing it here. That was a "cap wont matter in 5 years" signing, clearly. If you're thinking that way, you have to go all the way. For the fans, for the guys in that room, and for the player and what they've meant, IMO.

If 71 now walks, Hextall better have the mother of all backup plans. We were operating a week ago as if the core has got a few more miles in their legs before its over. Now, we better act like that in the market. Whether that is Trocheck, or Kadri, or Gaudreau, or Rackell, or a trade for Scheifele, trade for Gibson, whatever.

What annoys the hell out of me about this situation is that Washington is just going to throw 8 million at him for 5 years. They've already decided their goal as a franchise is to fellate Ovie the next five year (rather than to actually win). To them, signing a Penguins "legend" is about as important as winning a cup, so they'll do it and Leonsis will try to convince himself its revenge for years of heartbreak.

If the Rangers want to do it, they will essentially destroy their own cap to make it happen.

So let's assume that Malkin is gone.

Does that make us a bigger player in free agency? 15 million in cap space is the most we've had in years. We could do some crazy shit with that. Maybe even be a player on Gaudreau....especially if we can trade a defenseman.
Don't think so tbh. The 6m on offer to Geno goes to another C more or less whole, maybe minus a million. That leaves you with 9m for 2 regular starting forwards and 2 spares. You'd have to trade some dudes to start getting punchy.

I don't know how Trocheck would feel about all this.

He's from here and so he knows what Malkin has meant here. Does he want the pressure of being the replacement?

Clearly if Malkin is walking Trocheck is 70%+ signing here.

Again, Trochek is a good 2RW.

He is not a good 2C.

The only possible Malkin replacements are Kadri, who this team can't afford, and Miller, who this team doesn't have the assets to acquire.
Seemed fine at 2C last year when he had virtually the same 5v5 P/P60 as Malkin in a much more defensive role.
I don't think the production variance will make us miss. And Geno was not a defensive shutdown center here either.
