Everyone is blaming Hextall without knowing if Geno is being stubborn and it's down to him
I think its fair to say people can assign blame all around in this situation. It's very very disappointing all over. But if, as is rumored, he's been given what he wanted (a fourth year) and still wants to test the market then that part is on Malkin, and not Hextall.
The part I blame Hextall for is deciding that its a "ride or die" situation with Letang, extending him forever, but not doing it here. That was a "cap wont matter in 5 years" signing, clearly. If you're thinking that way, you have to go all the way. For the fans, for the guys in that room, and for the player and what they've meant, IMO.
If 71 now walks, Hextall better have the mother of all backup plans. We were operating a week ago as if the core has got a few more miles in their legs before its over. Now, we better act like that in the market. Whether that is Trocheck, or Kadri, or Gaudreau, or Rackell, or a trade for Scheifele, trade for Gibson, whatever.
What annoys the hell out of me about this situation is that Washington is just going to throw 8 million at him for 5 years. They've already decided their goal as a franchise is to fellate Ovie the next five year (rather than to actually win). To them, signing a Penguins "legend" is about as important as winning a cup, so they'll do it and Leonsis will try to convince himself its revenge for years of heartbreak.
If the Rangers want to do it, they will essentially destroy their own cap to make it happen.
