Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

Oh no, he was offered $5.75 million instead of $6 million! That totally makes it Hextall's fault for Malkin leaving!

I think people here need to just realize that Hextall basically caved into Malkin's demands and Malkin shut off all negotiations after he did that, instead of continuing to talk to Hextall.
5.75 for Evgeni freaking Malkin is insulting.

Where is that reported? Maybe he's upset that the team is playing f*** f*** games 48 hours from free agency.

If he's leaving because of that, he can leave.

If he says "I would take $24 million over 3 years" and Hextall comes back with "I'll give you $23 million over 4 years", then Malkin cuts off contract talks because his feelings are hurt, he can leave for all I care.

5.75 for Evgeni freaking Malkin is insulting.

But $6 million is fine?

6.5 for 4 is like the absolute max the Pens can do. I wonder what the actual numbers are.

To the point of pride, I think Geno read the tea leaves that a lot of people in the org are more dour on his last couple of seasons. People whose thinking is closer to mine or @AuroraBorealis or others. Not like Rondu level deranged but pretty skeptical of a clearly diminishing star.

He thinks the offers were lip service to appease Letang/Crosby and the fan base, but doesn't actually feel wanted. I think it's a pretty obvious (and smart) subtext-reading on his part.
I still very much respect his ability. He may even be better than last year, especially if Rakell returns.
But I don't think it will change the outcome for our team in the end. The journey to that point will only change.

I think you're right though. This isn't about money. It's pride. A fatal weakness of humanity.

There is a cut off somewhere for everyone. If Malkin said hey pay me what Letang got and Im good. And they said no, then yes that could be insulting.

I mean if Hextall refused to go to 6 and Malkin would have taken that then ya its on Hextall.
It's never 100% on one side or the other.

Geno's been about the money his entire career. Dude was making like 16% of the cap by himself when he signed in 2014. Hextall played hardball and wanted to stick to the FO's idea of a cap structure and it meant not budging to give a little extra to a franchise legend.

It is what it is. Oh well.

Would you want to talk to Hextall anymore than necessary? Dude is afraid of people.

4 years at 6 or even close to 6 is fine. There’s a 7.1 % chance Malkin plays that 4th year. Some other club can give him 4 @7 but it shouldn’t be the Pens.

Malkin should feel insulted and unwanted if the team offered him below 6M AAV.

It sucks it had to be this way but sometimes you just have to move on. It's not like we have missed out on anything in Malkin's career. He's done it all and then some. We will always have the memories and cup wins to look back on.

71 will hang in the rafters next to 66 and 87 soon enough.

It is low, but less insulting.

4x7M would get it down.

I don't really care whose fault it is that Malkin is leaving I'm just sad that he will be playing elsewhere. It really sucks.

Unless the Pens win a cup with his replacement everyone involved is going to regret this in a few years, Malkin included.

Right and to me thats trash. Everyone can have their opinion thats fine. But I think thats a load of garbage. Please tell me what an extra 500k is going to get them.

Also not trying to argue with you. Thats more or a rhetorical questions. I am just mad and sad :(

Honestly, it's still cheap for a player of Malkin's caliber. And you'll see that here on this board we've talked that "acceptable" number for Malkin down from 7 million just like a month ago.
