Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

Defending Hextall at this stage is laughable. He waited until a day before UFA to secure his hall of fame franchise legend and squandered the deal. If the idea of the Letang deal was to compete now, what the f*** is Hextall's plan now?

I have to think he has a backup plan that he thinks will leave the Pens adequately competitive. Key word being "thinks."

Im not going to come down on Hextall, it seems Genos camp was coming down way too hard. If I have to criticize Hextall on anything it's prioritizing Carter when he could have approched Malkin and Letang sooner.

It is low, but less insulting.

4x7M would get it down.
You can’t blame them for thinking Malkin is not worth that. That’s a charity contract that wouldn’t take into account the reality of who Malkin is right now, which is a player who is getting more injured every year as he ages. It would also ensure Malkin gets to play with Kapanen and some other plug again.

He thought he could play chicken with the 3rd or 4th best player in franchise history, and it wasn't the case. If Malkin hits FA he won't sign here, the Pens will not wait. They'll pursue other FA's. The team isn't going to get involved in a bidding war for Malkin, Hextall will move on.

Sad end to what should have been a slam dunk

It sucks it had to be this way but sometimes you just have to move on. It's not like we have missed out on anything in Malkin's career. He's done it all and then some. We will always have the memories and cup wins to look back on.

71 will hang in the rafters next to 66 and 87 soon enough.
It’s no guarantee he leaves.

Malkin should feel insulted and unwanted if the team offered him below 6M AAV.
Yeah until he's 40, when he's already injury prone now and his knee could go at any moment.
It's not crazy at all for Hextall at all to try to minimize the damage here.

Everyone wanted a tough negotiator. Now you guys are bitching that you have one.

Get Rust and Letang signed for cheap so you can turn around and move them for picks for the rebuild. Glowy brain strategy. -taps temple-

4x6 seems very reasonable to me, but if they were lowballing him constantly until now and finally caved with 4x6 I understand him feeling hurt about that, especially after watching Letang get 6 years.

It's very possible that FSG gave Hextall marching orders to play hardball with Letang and Malkin. It worked with Letang.

IF Malkin ends up walking and either JT Miller or Nazem Kadri aren’t Penguins then this will have been a colossal failure. I can’t wait until they sign Gaudrea to big money to try and prop Jeff Carter up as the 2C

Nah. It was below 6. 100%.

I mean, the big sticking point seemed to be term for Geno. *IF* the Pens gave him that 4th year and he's walking because they offered $5.8 million instead of $6 million per year, then that's on him.

I'm not even saying I blame him for wanting a specific amount. I'm just saying that if the club pretty much gave him what he was asking (minus a couple hundred thousand per year) then that's totally on Geno for wanting to leave at that point.

I've been saying all along that I think a fair deal for Malkin is around $7 million a year for 3 years. Adding the 4th year there doesn't mean you can just keep the same AAV for the 4th year, I don't think Malkin will be worth anything even close to $7 million in the 4th year of that deal.

Malkin wanted $24 million over 4 years, while Hextall was presumably offering something in the $22-$24 million range over 4 years. Just like you can say "why won't Hextall just meet Malkin's demands if they're so close?", you can also legitimately say "why won't Malkin just meet Hextall's demands if they're so close". You're talking about like $2 million over 4 years from a guy who has made like $100 million over his career.

Tbf, given the way NHL economics are, I can see how Geno getting 4 x 6m is an insult while simultaneously that being an overpayment. The NHL's whole deal is overpaying old players and underpaying young players.

Next time Geno stays healthy and plays like a top-10 player at his position, he'll have a leg to stand on when it comes to wanting a deal similar to Letang. /shrug

It's not on him, below 6M AAV for Malkin is insulting.
