If Geno going to FA what's his market?
- NYR is probably going after Kane, the less bad human.
- FLA needs to shed a bunch of salary
- TB same as FLA
- WSH they don't have any money
- LAK I have no clue about their cap situation but they're not a contender anyways


Maybe he goes to join my friend Draisaitl in Edmonton?! McDavid, Draisaitl and Geno would be a sick first line, I don't know
 
So let's assume that Malkin is gone.

Does that make us a bigger player in free agency? 15 million in cap space is the most we've had in years. We could do some crazy shit with that. Maybe even be a player on Gaudreau....especially if we can trade a defenseman.

Well when we’re paying 6 million for someone who can’t get close to a PPG we will revisit if he was worth it or not. But I suspect it won’t be close.

Malkin is still a very very good player. 6 mill for what he still brings is easily worth it. Easily.

Disagree. I don't see who's coming in the East to supplant us next year.
I'm not even convinced Boston finish ahead of us, with Marchand and MacAvoy out to start the year for a good bit.

Plus Trocheck is more durable. You need to factor in all the games he'll be available for that Malkin won't be.

Welp if he's done playing games and going to market Hextall is really having his seat warmed up.

Cause you can't wait on Malkin now...you have to secure a 2C even if it's a downgrade.

So better get that Miller trade cooking

They need a 2nd line center desperately then. So a lot of that money is going there.

Yeah I do think we will make it. Letang was the key to whether or not we'd miss the playoffs or not. I love Geno, but they could replace him with a solid center and get by just fine I think.

The top line is good enough, Letang is good enough, and Sully is a good enough coach that this team will easily make it barring bad injuries to major players.

All Trocheck would have to offer us for the team to make the playoffs next year with the exact same performances from everyone else is 41 games at a -6 but with sick power play stats and 41 games of whatever Carter was doing again at the start of the season (good but not astounding iirc). It's really not a massive bar.

Doesn't matter if Malkin's hitting a "PPG" if he's missing 30 games a year.

Yeah, they won't get a PPG player for $6 million, but I bet you they can get a 50 point player for $6 million.
 
Just came here real quick to say:

  • Malkin may be doing this as a negotiation tactic. It may not be over for you Pens fans. Hextall plays hard ball, Geno may be doing the same.
  • Malkin *may* actually be a really greedy dude right now. It's possible it is Hextall saying "You're really not worth that much" - and he's right (perhaps).
  • If we laid out Malkin's age, games played, points, etc. and scrubbed out his name...I'm not sure you'd be on-board with re-signing X-player at the price Malkin wants, too.
    • Like if it's 4 years, 8 mill...can you all say you're really on board with that kind of money and term for Malkin IF his name wasn't Evgeni Malkin?

I'm gonna throw this out there - and don't freak:
  • Giroux would be a better signing at that term/money given Geno's injury history. Giroux plays LW more, but can be a C still. (I am not saying you should sign him - I'm saying there's other options than Malkin you may actually be happier with a few years from now).

No plan. But hes not deserving a letang contract. Its the truth and it hurts i know. Alternatives are hard to find at the moment but malkin in the playoffs showed us whats his current status: a guy who doesnt deserve 6 mils per year for 4 plus years. Imagine him in 2026 skating around for fanboys who just wanna see the trio.

Yeah I'm assuming originally it was $6 million and 3 year term, but Malkin wanted an extra year so they probably returned with $5 million and a 4 year term. Total dollar value of the contract is actually better, but maybe Geno wants both the $6 million and the 4 year term.
