Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

Seravalli didn't say what the AAV was, though, just what he thought it would end up at. We don't know what they actually offered.

It makes a lot more sense to assume they offered around $6 million based on "the Penguins are hoping to get Malkin at around the same money Letang got" than to assume they offered less solely because you want to blame Hextall for Malkin not signing.

Not sure where people are making this assumption that he was offered the 4x6. It wasn’t reported once.

At 14:30, Seravalli talked about Malkin. He said that for the first time, the Penguins did offer a 4 year deal to Malkin and he thinks the Penguins are hoping to get him at the same AAV as Letang. The Malkin camp needed to get to 4 years to get the total amount of money that Malkin wanted. Seravalli also says that he thinks there's a deal to be made even if the AAV is higher.

Seravalli also wonders if Malkin decides to leave even if they meet their demands out of anger that they didn't prioritize him and how long the negotiation process took.

That's the report. Not necessarily right, but more than an assumption.

If true, oh well. Malkin has deserved nothing but to come back at a severely reduced rate with his age and injury history. if he feels slighted, there's the door.

You are assuming the money. I am saying there is no report of a number thats all.

I'm just saying it's important to be clear on what was actually reported. No one reported the four year AAV. Seravalli speculated on what it might look like, but that's different than saying, "Malkin was offered 4x6."

Wasn't it speculated that Hextall's original offers to Geno and Letang were insulting? You certainly don't do that to your core pieces. You shouldn't cave in like Kyle Dubas has, but make an offer that can be interpreted as reasonable. I don't necessarily blame Geno for wanting to pursue other options. He doesn't owe the organization anything. If you want be to be a penny-pincher as a negotiator, this is what can happen.

Again, this could all be BS and things can change on a dime.

“Around the same money” could also mean $5.5 million

Yeah, I really don't get why people are just automatically assuming the Penguins offered less than $6 million just because Malkin didn't sign. The only evidence we had was Seravalli saying they made the 4 year offer and were hoping to get Malkin at around the same AAV as Letang.

People just want to blame Hextall for Malkin not re-signing and testing the UFA market.

Malkin at 35,36,37 or 38 was not going to win us a cup in the next 3-4 years...can we please get younger...and if you insist on blaming someone..how about his agent and his wife

Yup happy wife, happy life. I wonder if the Panthers are in play so he can be close to home.

Hextall thought he could f*** around and play hardball with Evgeni Malkin until the last minute and that his desire to retire with Crosby would make him cave. Malkin isn't like that. He's extremely proud. This process should have never played out like this, and they burned the relationship for no reason. Malkin going to FA is him saying he thinks the team took his goodwill for granted. 4x6 should have been easy. As much as Malkin and Crosby are friends (they are), Malkin cares about what he thinks he is worth, and that isn't in sync with the Pens.

To me, 70-30 chance he's gone.

Then why are you yelling at Hextall for offering Malkin less than $6 million a year?

All we have is Seravalli saying that the Penguins hope Malkin comes in around the same AAV as Letang, which is a $6.1 million AAV. There's nothing there to suggest that Hextall offered less than $6 million AAV on a 4 year deal unless you're trying to find reasons to blame Hextall for Malkin not signing.

Does Geno being gone and replaced by someone like Trocheck mean we miss the playoffs? IMO no. Think most would agree.

So then the pertinent question is how this affects the playoffs, right?
Well, we got eliminated the last 4 years in R1 with Geno. He didn't save us.

Let's not pretend this is a seismic shift in what's to come. This is just an emotional letdown, possibly losing someone who's been a key piece here since 2006.

It stings to see this headline for me too though.

I mean if Malkin doesnt sign it is on Hextall. Granted Malkin my have wanted 10mil but at the end of the day it was on Hextall to get a deal done. Numbers will eventually come out but until then its on Hextall.

Everybody's freaking the f*** out over the era being over and losing Geno (to his own ego/greed) and I'm over here happy that this team's being forced ever-closer to the needed rebuild after four straight 1st round exits--likely five next spring.
