Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

If Malkin were to walk (i still think that's not likely) i would have to think the Pens sign Trocheck and probably Rakell...but they'd probably need a significant upgrade at 2LW too if they are looking to stay competitive. Who do we are the best realistic targets in that scenario?

Does Geno being gone and replaced by someone like Trocheck mean we miss the playoffs? IMO no. Think most would agree.

So then the pertinent question is how this affects the playoffs, right?
Well, we got eliminated the last 4 years in R1 with Geno. He didn't save us.

Let's not pretend this is a seismic shift in what's to come. This is just an emotional letdown, possibly losing someone who's been here since 2006.

It stings to see this headline for me too though.
Perfectly said.

Here's the unspoken part about the Malkin negotiation as well:

We're all focusing on Malkin seeing what is out there in free agency. Guess who is also going to do the same if he doesn't sign before FA hits? The Penguins. When Wednesday hits the Pens won't be able to wait around for Geno to make a decision. There's going to be teams making big time offers for the FA centers and other players out there. The Penguins will be one of those teams. They might give Geno a courtesy call and say hey look you need to sign now if you're going to because otherwise we're signing xyz player, but they might not even do that.

Imo if this hits Wednesday without Malkin signing, he's gone. Pens won't be able to afford to wait around for him to make a decision. They'll need to move on Kadri, or Trocheck, or Gaudreau, or wherever else they opt to spend that money.

Hextall is actually being an intelligent asset-manager and assessing his players based on their value instead of half-cocked visions of what a player was half a decade ago or “loyalty” - a rare breed among NHL GMs - and the overwhelming response is negative.

Thank God RH is in charge.
Listen here Ron... we need you focusing on contracts and not posting on HF

Everyone is blaming Hextall without knowing if Geno is being stubborn and it's down to him
Acknowledged, but I feel comfortable doing so at this point. We'll see. Shocked if they offered 4x6. If they did and Geno said f*** yourself, then it's on him.

Remind of this when Carter is the second line center and looking like dogshit next year.

“Around the same money” could also mean $5.5 million
It could but its the less likely explanation. The wording "thinks the aim is" is suggests he could be off, that he's not 100% sure, but also that he's not just guessing either. I'd hesitate to give anything definite from the report but the idea we're at a 4x6m offer isn't quite from thin air.

Everybody's freaking the f*** out over the era being over and losing Geno (to his own ego/greed) and I'm over here happy that this team's being forced ever-closer to the needed rebuild after four straight 1st round exits--likely five next spring.

How on earth is wanting a 6x4 deal greed ? He’s worth more than that.

Then why are you yelling at Hextall for offering Malkin less than $6 million a year?

All we have is Seravalli saying that the Penguins hope Malkin comes in around the same AAV as Letang, which is a $6.1 million AAV. There's nothing there to suggest that Hextall offered less than $6 million AAV on a 4 year deal unless you're trying to find reasons to blame Hextall for Malkin not signing.

Sir I did not. I said there was no AAV announce and that you couldn't assume it was 6. I never said anything else about the number.

From your perspective, Sid asking out would be good too.

Maybe even Letang in 6-8 months.

I don't even mean that to be insulting. We could get a haul for Sid even if he has full veto. It's a potential bonanza in merch, tickets, whatever to a new organization. We'd get 3 1sts pretty easily.
I think there's maybe 10K total new Crosby jerseys to be sold in Pittsburgh that haven't already. There's 250K in Denver.

Then Letang. He asks out and we retain 25%? An absolute bonanza at the deadline in bidding for him.

Yeah. This whole thing was just unnecessary and I do feel he is most likely gone. They aren't going to wait for him.

Ya thats what makes this sucks. If he goes to FA he is most definitely gone.

It won't be the worst thing to have to retool if Geno does leave....of course depending on what the Pens do to replace him.

But I'll be sad anyways. It wasn't right seeing Jagr play elsewhere and it won't feel right if Geno does either. Call it what you want. Sentiment, whatever. But it will hurt.

If Malkin does hit free agency, I really hope they give him a deadline to make a decision. You can't sit around and wait only to end up with Jeff Carter centering your second line.

And if his feelings get hurt in a negotiation, he better not go to a big market.
