Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

No other nation has produced a rate of 'rags to ritches' even close to America. If you chose to group people economically - even our poorest are truly wealthier than 80+% of the globe.

Now, healthcare we could talk about all day. Not that it's any shred better in Canada - it's just 'free'. Many people I know wait to have surgeries and other major procedures until they're here in the States.

Also tough to compare a nation as big as Canada that has the population of California to one as big and complex as the United States. Different cultures, different people, different priorities. Our GDP could easily provide for certain things it's where it's "spent" that could be debated. Zero reason to raise any taxes when the money is already there.

But the shortest answer to your question is that our nation was founded upon a distrust in government - and the last 100 years has done nothing to skew that opinion. Places in the United States with the highest taxes also tend to have the largest wealth gaps and highest poverty rates (California, New York, etc). Education here is based on growth - some of the best public, private, and collegiate level schools are in the southern US but with a polarized media and 'scores' based on things like growth or averages - the opinion that schools are better in the severely segregated north becomes common opinion (burroughs in the northeast are drastically more segregated than any town in Florida as an example - so schools here pull from all wealth classes and walks of life). So yeah - you could keep the same low (federal) taxes here and provide for some levels of healthcare if you spent better or directed taxes better.
This isn't political, this is just fact checking: California is #24 in terms of US poverty by state, N.Y. is #17. FL is #19, fwiw, but this is skewed by the fact a large portion of the FL population has moved there in the last 35 years, and ability to re-locate is generally not a characteristic of those in poverty.

Top 10 states in terms of poverty are, in order of most poverty-stricken: Miss, LA, NM, KY, AK, WV, AL, OK, TN, SC. Draw your own conclusions.

The U.S. is ranked #27 in terms of social mobility via the World Economic Forum's Global Social Mobility Index. Parental wealth and zip code are the huge drivers of economic status of their children in the U.S.

Yep which is why I think Geno is playing chicken here. The media has made Geno out to be this wild Russian guy who was unpredictable. Geno will never come over to USA! Geno will leave the Pens after his first contact! Geno will never play 2C to Sid.

Geno has been the most consistent dude ever. He says he loves playing with Sid, loves playing in Pittsburgh, and his family is now in Florida. The only two teams I would see him go to are in Florida specifically to be closer to his family. I think he wants to be a Penguin for life and then retire.

The media always tends to build these weird Geno narratives. Geno, himself, has pretty much been consistent in his messaging since day 1.
Yeah but he also uses Rossi as a mouthpiece and is apparently texting shit like "Do they still want me" to him. He's clearly not above using Rossi for leverage at this point. To be honest it stirred the fans up but also makes Geno look very sensitive. I can't believe he's going to let Rossi write his autobiography. How could anyone believe a word of it?

Name one team that has won a cup where their best players were in their mid 30's.. There' a huge difference between a generational talent at 28 than at 36

Ages of the 2002 Red Wings' top 8 scorers in the regular season:

Shanahan 33
Fedorov 32
Hull 37
Lidstrom 31
Robitaille 35
Yzerman 36
Larionov 41
Chelios 40

Just answering your comment. Obviously it was a different era in a pre-cap world.

Speak for yourself loser!

Lol - in all seriousness we don't need any more influx. Florida is already the 3rd (official) most populus state in the country - having overtook NY many years ago. If you counted the amount of people with 2nd homes I feel we could give Texas a better run. Living on the coast our population EASILY doubles in the winter months with the Canadian snowbirds.

But seriously that's the amazing thing about our country. If you want to live in a congested, dirty city like NY - have at it! If you want open sky - it's yours, etc etc. Not every nation has that. We're increasingly becoming a place where even public policy is drastically different (hold our opinions) in different areas...which could be a good thing if you choose to be an optimist.

Regarding the taxes I've always wondered that as well. Moreso about the Canadian teams. I mean if you're young I could see not giving 2 shits about NY taxes versus the money you'd save elsewhere - but Canada is nutso with taxes (city, provincial, luxury, etc)... you could easily pay 45-50% in provinces without being careful about building playgrounds and donating to charities etc. And for your own reference there are 7 states in the United States with no income tax. Not just Florida and Texas. Florida is the best because we also enjoy really low property tax whereas Texas has extremely high property tax. But new to the list is the Seattle Kraken. Washington state has no income tax - so you could get the 'best of both worlds' going to a team like that - and there's tons of BEAUTIFUL neighborhoods outside of Seattle if you've got a family or prefer green to concrete.
Yeah, I’ll take a pass on gators, mosquitos, humidity, hurricanes, the ridiculous culture-war governor and (no offense as I have a retired Uncle and a SIL’s father living there)Floridians. In dirty NYC, you can get Thai or BBQ delivered at 3AM. Broadway, culture, elite restaurants,…

The COL everywhere in the US is getting crazy right now. I think the only places I've seen that don't have crazy rising prices right now are Costco and Chipotle
Seems that way. I was shocked at how much prices had gone up when I visited Boston after a year or so out of the States. Thought this was a good time to be leaving old Blighty but seems very much out of the frying pan and into the fire.

The 2007 Anaheim Ducks. 2 of their top 3 players were up there in age and they had a mix of younger/older players all thru the lineup.

We are also in a pretty unique spot with Geno/Crosby

How many teams have had that opportunity

Then you have the way the players take care of their bodies and perform better later into life. Years from now with advancements in training and recovery it will be even better

Lemieux used to smoke cigs, the training and recovery is worlds different than its been in the past so you have a much smaller sample size to look at

There is also a huge difference between generational talent at 36 than your regular NHLer at 36
Getzlaf and Perry were one wo in scoring in the playoffs

Jordy Bellerive wouldn’t have made a difference…because he isn’t very good
I think that speaks to a larger point that is evident by the wave of guys not being qualified by the Pens today.

HexBurke are finally molding the minor league system with players they want rather than ones they inherited.

Would like this if I was allowed to. It's also ironic that @molon labe is saying there's no reason for more taxes when the government subsidizes low-tax states using tax revenue from states with higher state taxes.

By overpaying scrap players like Erod, Heinen, Carter, TB.......... should I go on?
Heinen just scored 18 goals while making a measly $1 million. Now that he’s more expensive they team is ditching him. That’s exactly what you need to do. They didn’t overpay for Heinen in any way shape or form. ERod for as much as I hate him, also just scored 19 goals while also making a measly $1 million. So again didn’t overpay for that production in the slightest. Now if the team brings either of them back and gives them raises I’ll talk about how stupid of a move that is too. Letting Jordy Bellerive go is meaningless

Not that it is guaranteed that he isn't coming back, but why exactly was the organization so hesitant to give Bellerive a look? Was he too undisciplined? Off-ice issues?

His production was decent, he was quick on his skates, played tenaciously, was a part of the alternate captain rotation. What gives? Truth be told, I believe his game would translate better to the pros than Nylander's does.

You failed to mention Selanne who was 36 or Progner 32 who both had just as many points as Perry and 2 less points than Getz

And another poster just mentioned the Red Wings - I am sure there are more. Age means nothing if these guys are still performing.

@CallArnoldSlick

Shanahan 33

Hull 37

Robitaille 35

Larionov 41
