Different scenarios
Debrincat wanted out. Jake presumably does not. Jake is a better point producer too and is a 2x Cup winner
Plus the cap is going up next year... rising tide lifting all boats and all that

Also, the Pens tend to go to bat for their "homegrown" guys:

Rust
Letang
Geno

All got deals done last year before FA. Jarry got it this year too. Jake will be no different

I predict he'll get a number starting with a 9

Jake only has the '17 cup.

The smart route was giving a better offer to Philly for DeAngelo and using all those millions in savings compared to EK's cap hit on improving other areas of the roster.
Watch TDA put up similar points to EK next year and be better defensively, at a 2.5M cap hit. All at the cost of a 7th rounder for Carolina. f*** me. That might be the best move in free agency. That or Duchene at 3M.
There's no way Sully would want that dude around, remembering he had Cole tossed away...

Cole got busted with a 17 year old high school chick.

Isn't DeAngelo just abrasive?

....feel like I'm going to regret opening the can of worms here.

Back to wishing a happy EK day to everyone lol. Let's land something that makes this team palatable, please! (Oh and Tarasenko is still available)

TDA is going to be a steal for Carolina at that cap hit
He is. Whether people like TDA or not (and no doubt he's given a lot of people good reason to hate him), he puts the points up. Having him on the third pairing (alluding to the depth of the Carolina defense), is not a great thing for us. Our TDA is Rutta or POJ or Smith. Looking at how we match up against other division rivals is important. To get to the playoffs, we have to get a spot within the division. I don't think we can do another 22-23 season where we are like at a 10% win ratio against the top teams in the metro.

So if a team like Carolina is "loading up" and if NJ makes anymore moves (like Helly), then we need to make another move, in kinda. This is why I'm pushing for Karlsson so hard. Not lost on Dubas I'm sure, but we can't sit around and watch others load up and then do nothing. Now whether or not that's in season or not, remains to be seen.

You just have to shake your head on how bad Hextall has f***ed us here between Petry, Granlund, and Carter. That's $14.3mil that could be used much better elsewhere. That's a Karlsson, a good 3C, and a solid bottom 6 wing. Or two of those and a Helly-level goalie.
We should just trade Jake in season tbh.

There is no reason to sign him and I highly doubt this team is anywhere close to a contender by the deadline with our goaltending and forward depth.
That's not how we do things in Pittsburgh.

So I just have a question… wasn’t the problem with Comeau that he was played in the top 6? So if Hinostroza actually would perform like Comeau but he does that while playing in the bottom six wouldn’t that actually be good?

I advocated for signing Hinostroza.

The big difference between Comeau and Hino is Comeau was an ideal 3rd line and Hinostroza is trash defensively.

In before the rebuttal of [well those players have to want to come here] [unused cap space means nothing] blah blah....

Yeah the guy TRADED for all 3 of those pieces. Re-upped Carter with a NMC lol.

Petry is just old and overpaid for what he brings to this team. Behind Sullivan gone (yeah, will never happen) and Jarry (welp...) - he was the guy I most wanted to see shipped off this Summer. Even more than Granlund and Carter. I feel like we're stuck with those two duds but Petry should be moveable and would open some super, super valuable cap space.

I think Jake 9 x 5
My guess is $8.5M x 6

Only if Sully is gone first - or the 1st rounder(s) are in 2026+.

I'd hate to trade Jake for more PK depth and guys that just 'play the game a certain way'.

Thank God the PK - the death knell (weren't they first or second in the league in Nov/Dec?) of the 2022/2023 Penguins is improved.
You trade Jake for an offensive blueliner who can put up points a la EK, but younger lol

Jake isn't getting traded, so we can put this to rest.

SHOULD he be traded? Yea probably, but "that's not how we do things in Pittsburgh"
Man I wanted us to be smart and do a Jake + --Tkchuk trade so badly.

He's the one guy with value here. But it's difficult to cut bait with him unless we are bringing in someone who can provide us winning traits

Alex DeBrincat (25, 26 this year)
- .42 GPG
- .83 ppg
- .66 ppg playoffs in 9 games

Jake Guentzel (will be 29 going on 30)
- .43 GPG
- .91 ppg
- 1 ppg in 58 playoff games (58 points)

Yeah, they're 'comparable' until they're not. Jake isn't getting sub 8 for 4 years lol. Jake also has 1 more season under contract so he gets to see how much the cap rises next Summer - so he can be patient. His playoff totals are the most understated aspect of his game - whether they've been at the benefit of Sid or not.

I'll be shocked if the number doesn't start with 9. The term is tricky. This is it for him - especially considering the harder game he's played. 30 years old next October when the contract would 'start'....why would he sign for 4? He's going to want 7 or 8 years.

Yeah Jake gonna get paid from us or someone else IMO. Especially with the likely cap bump next year.

I think the problem that he didn't mention but we all know is that Jake will come with a full NMC or a damn tight NTC.

This org has handed them out like candy for over a half decade now. Jake? Get used to a future return from Chicago, Minnesota, or Nashville.
I'd be ok with giving him a full NMC for the duration of Sid's contract.... but it drops when Sid's contract ends. And if he's not ok with it? Trade him now.

Sullivan and what is that other guys name from the steelers... tomlin!
Okay, so after coaching those two guys could have a go round the country seminar 'how to stay employed much longer than you should be' tour.

Seriously, they must be duplicitous little monsters or corporate boot lickers.

Sullivan owes his longevity to Jarry. No surprise we are where we are.

If only poor Sully would have had the healthy team. If he just had HIS goalie. Literally head so far up your ass to believe that - yet that's the stories that were run.

Be nice to the local media, smirk and charm your bosses, and dodge blame like agent smith dodging bullets.

Yeah, this came up well after the Pens.... The cheating and child stuff. Cole was let go because he was speaking to the media and Sully didn't like it.

I wasn't tagging Cole to bring him in, just that sully won't put up with shit.

Jake would bring back a Debrincat type return. Hardly worth moving him for that. I'd only consider it if the team looked headed towards the tank.

It was just a big brain move "take DOC to arbitration" to get Granlund eligible for a buyout. Dubas didn't buy him out in the first window so he could try to hockey trade Granny.

Now that it didn't work, he gets a second chance to buy him out if DOC goes to arbitration.

I think.

I hope.
