Post-Game Talk: Pens get Sabred by Buffalo

Haven't passed 24th in finishing 3 years straight. It's never been targeted and addressed. Shocking that it's still a problem.
The team lacks depth scoring, the big guys once again are showing up.

That makes the treatment of a guy like Puustinen all the more idiotic. Having a young call up looking like he belongs in a scoring role is found money. Sully just throws it in a garbage can.

You can look at shift charts and come up with any fairytale to defend the jackass, but good coaches let their best talent play. Even on the PP.

As a leader, how do you see what is happening to Puustinen and feel it's ok to sit there quietly and be a fake ass leader that just stays content because you get everything you want so that's all you focus on?

Maybe it's because I've always advocated for hard workers that were getting shafted even when it f***ed me over, the sense of this isn't right and if I can say something even if it f***s me over, I will because I would want someone to do the same for me - has me living my entire life as the wrong type of leader in companies I've worked for or just how I live life.

But to see a kid come and work his ass off and do well only to have his minutes decreased for some spiteful ignorant reason and say or do nothing is cowardice.

Huberdeau might not be his usual self stats wise but even he felt what Sutter said and how he treated Jakob Pelletier, was wrong and stated it, that the room wasn't happy and it was the beginning of the end for Sutter after that with the room.

Some might get all triggered that I am talking shit about the lord and savior Sidney Cosby but I really don't give a f*** if it riles some weak minded losers up. This is f***ing enough already with the bullshit by this coach.

We’d have been fine if we could just hold on for a point…Carolina lost tonight albeit got a loser point, NJD lost and Isles are losing…we could have picked up another point towards a spot…but no…we have to F things up per usual…

puustinen didn't play so i guess he isn't the reason they lost. the players that did get to play lost them the game

maybe we can just run 11 forwards and bank some cap space if sullivan thinks we don't need a full roster

I think that, in general, this board needs to pump the brakes a bit on Puustinen. Myself included. Like you said, he probably doesn't make a difference tonight.

But it's the principles of knowing how to develop a skill player and give him confidence.

And the coach needs to know what blend of players he needs to inject into the game at what point. This is where Sully REALLY failed tonight. He fails in this area all the time, but tonight it was absurd.
who on this team besides sid looks like they ever play with full confidence

Looking a bit closer at Puustinen's shift cart (Time On Ice Report Home Team) I think he's being undercut by his linemates and by Sullivan's usage of the fourth line.

The shifts were normal in the first period. Six shifts, 4:01 total ice time.

The second period had five total penalties - three against the Sabres, two against the Penguins. That's 10 minutes of game time where Puustinen isn't used. So he only got one shift. Eller and DOC are penalty killers. They need a moment to catch their breath after the PKs. And Eller is on the second PP unit. It throws the lines off.

Puustinen got two shifts in the third, but you had an extended 5-on-3, a 2 minute PK for the Pens, and then an extended push at the end.

He's getting shafted a bit by game events, but that means Sullivan needs to find a way to spot him some extra shifts.

it's not some quirk of game situations, it's decision making

He should definitely be on the PP with that shot power and handedness. Even on PP1. It's f***ing 26th. Rakell has 3 PPP's on the year.

Just when you think the team can turn a corner, it reminds you why it's outside of a playoff spot by losing to a shit opponent.

The issue is even when you have the team playing well, we have Jarry in net and he throws the game with an atrociously bad goal in the first few minutes.

Even the second goal was weak.

Ned needs to be the starter at this point.

I loved Sully doing two Jeff Carter shifts with <5 minutes left and the team in need of a goal to tie.

Jarry's not gonna be perfect, but in a situation where you absolutely need your goalie to make a save, he's real low on my list of preferred goalies. He's just too volatile. One game he'll stand on his head and the next he'll allow two goals that make you wanna turn the game off.

Stuck with him for better or worse. Whatever. He's one of several glaring issues.

Perfect example of why they’re not a playoff team. Good teams are supposed to beat bad teams. The Pens don’t.

Frustrating because they consistently beat non-division teams above them in the standings. Same as last year.

Last game at least two of the goals we scored came because for a change the Pens had proper traffic in front of Swayman. This game, the Sabres D was a mess but the Penguins decided they were once again too cool for this dirty goals shit. Yeah, they were unlucky too but you know the old adage - you gotta be good to be lucky. Take a look what happens even if the player who is about to shoot takes forever - no one tries to take the goalie' eyes. Oddly enough, one of the few players who occasionally go to the dirty areas is Geno - you know the old, injury-prone Geno who was never that good at it in the first place. Why not have the younger, faster guys at least f***ing try it? Rakell did it a lot when he first came over but Sullisma seems to have taught him that this is a no-no.

Sully finally moved the ghost of Smith to L3 but also proceeded to play Puustinen only 5 and a half minutes. These two good games Harkins had somehow led to the bizarre result that he now got more 5 on 5 time than Eller, let alone Puustinen. And Acciari got more than DOC! Not the main reason for the loss, obviously, but stuff like that makes it very easy to not think the team is going anywhere and not care very much when it's losing games in a fashion that would be very frustrating if it were a genuine contender for anything other than the "most mediocre team in the league" accolade.

I cannot trust this team. They are simultaneously the best/worst versions of themselves - unless they fire this idiot coaching staff, there is no hope for the playoffs this year, even if they do get in by some miracle.
