Post-Game Talk: Pens get Sabred by Buffalo

Dubas either runs the show or he doesn't. If he does fire Sullivan. If he doesn't then it doesn't matter. Remake next year and signing Jake for over 9 million per is a keep Sid happy move. How happy is Sid when Pens miss playoffs or get bounced in round one again. Move Jake and fire Sullivan or trade him. Pens need some better players at 3RD and 4rh line LW. Neito out for 2 months so go get a banger with size who will hammer D men.

The second goal wasn't Jarry's fault, but he always seems to give those up when if he could just hold the f-in fort a little longer we'd get an OTL point or even pull a win out of our ass.

That doesn't excuse the rest of the team of course. Putting up that many shots and getting only 1 is dreadful, and so is wasting all those PP opportunities. Shit they nearly blew the 5v3 too.

Malkin is so bad on the powerplay now and I dunno what happened there as he used to be our most effective PP weapon.

Where's the tylenol?!
Jarry went down early on the second goal too…but it shouldn’t have come to that…what happened to all of our great net front goals…no one can get the goalie moving side to side either

No idea what the deal is with Puustinen. His usage is bizarre, especially when you need some offense late.

I don't think it makes a difference tonight, but it's not a good development.
I think that, in general, this board needs to pump the brakes a bit on Puustinen. Myself included. Like you said, he probably doesn't make a difference tonight.

But it's the principles of knowing how to develop a skill player and give him confidence.

And the coach needs to know what blend of players he needs to inject into the game at what point. This is where Sully REALLY failed tonight. He fails in this area all the time, but tonight it was absurd.

Our stars have hit the age where it's good nights followed by bad nights. That doesn't bode well for the future.

Eh I think everyone knows Puustinen probably won't be anything, but the difference is he's actually shown something.

What has Harkins shown?

He runs the show and he agrees with Sully because he’s a nerd and thinks hockey can be won on spreadsheets. We are f****** as @Gurglesons forewarned.

We’re back to 7th in the Metro, where we’ve hung around for two months…the numbers say we’re a .500 team even with Sid and Jake having tremendous seasons…almost as good as we could hoped and it’s still nowhere near good enough…if we’re not selling Jake, I’ll be pissed

Winning allows a lot of coaching idiocy to be ignored. Puustinen with barely 5 minutes is a joke. POJ with over 16 minutes is a farce.

When you put guys in a position to succeed (Puusy, formerly) they actually succeed. When you treat them like shit (Puusy, now) they don't succeed quite so much.

Yeah, I'm on the record as being skeptical about Puustinen in the bottom six, simply because he has a history in the AHL of not being defensively aware and his size not being in his favor.

But I think with Eller and DOC, you have a bit of protection defensively. And that line is going to be far more productive offensively than the 4th line.

What concerns me isn't Harkins, actually. It's Carter. Now that he's been better than he was at the start of the season, his minutes are creeping up.

Every coach has a blindspot for certain players. Whenever Sullivan is no longer behind the bench, his replacement will have a blindspot for someone the fans don't like. But not playing Puustinen more in a game in which he could've provided an offense is definitely a knock against Sullivan.

If this was a futbol team, this staff would have been fired 25 times this season already

Wish hockey tradition wasn't holding onto the nuts of some dummies in suits behind a bench

These players need a wake up call. Again. For the 389th time...

f*** this shit is embarrassing, this last week was shit for the team

Looking a bit closer at Puustinen's shift cart (Time On Ice Report Home Team) I think he's being undercut by his linemates and by Sullivan's usage of the fourth line.

The shifts were normal in the first period. Six shifts, 4:01 total ice time.

The second period had five total penalties - three against the Sabres, two against the Penguins. That's 10 minutes of game time where Puustinen isn't used. So he only got one shift. Eller and DOC are penalty killers. They need a moment to catch their breath after the PKs. And Eller is on the second PP unit. It throws the lines off.

Puustinen got two shifts in the third, but you had an extended 5-on-3, a 2 minute PK for the Pens, and then an extended push at the end.

He's getting shafted a bit by game events, but that means Sullivan needs to find a way to spot him some extra shifts.

Stale coach, a PP hitting at like 10% and allowing soft goals isn’t going to get this team in a playoff spot…
Jarry was bad on the first goal. But at least he had the mental fortitude to tighten it up after that. I thought it was going to be another Capitals game from him.

I’ve been as hard on Jarry as anyone over the last 3 years but any NHL team should be able to handle a goalie letting in a softy once a week or so. If you can excuse EK’s defensive meltdowns and Letang’s tantrums, you can excuse a goalie for not being perfect every night.

You absolutely canNOT be serious....
I guess I need to clarify. After all of that effort (and overturned results), that's his stat line.
So the captain carrying a bunch of DGAF trash on his back, may just run out of steam soon and join the gang himself.

Yea, but ever seen this movie every season of Jarrys career. January is here.
