But there’s almost no chance they’re this bad defensively under a new coach and they certainly can’t get worse, which means the roster improves in value. It makes no sense to not fire Sullivan.

I absolutely think there is a chance of that. The team sucks.

Like look at this roster. What on the roster says that this team isn't just geriatric crap? The name recognition of the core isn't enough to carry the team.

Letang looks completely washed up as a #1D. Karlsson looks like he can't be an effective player without being a rover. Graves and Grzelcyk suck. St. Ivany, Shea and whatever other #6D they're running with are all nothing pieces. Pettersson is their only defenseman who can actually play defense well, and he's almost definitely getting traded within 3 months.

Ironically the only thing worth a shit on the roster IS the geriatric crap.

Every single supporting piece on this roster has imploded like a f***ing neutron star.

I think literally every player on the team could benefit from a new voice, especially guys like Letang and Karlsson but even guys like Sid and Geno which could have a trickle effect. It’s not just that they can’t do it anymore it’s also largely in their heads at this point, same way it’s in ours where we see the same patterns play out every game for years

Dubas apparently was intent on making the team better this offseason. If he really stands by his moves and thinks this is a good roster (which I think it is... not great, but I think you can get to the playoffs with this roster), how have you not fired Sully by now? Saying you're open for business after the first month of the season tells me 1) he doesn't think a coaching change is needed or 2) he doesn't stand by the moves he made in the offseason and thinks the roster isn't good enough.

Also, once again, not including 71 with 87 pisses me off. Malkin's been better than Sid so far this year.

If every player except your very best ones implode at the same time..... there's a glaringly obvious reason for why that may have occurred.

To be fair I guess we don't know if Dubas ACTUALLY said that verbatim. From how I read it this was DK's "interpretation" and DK is a f***in' goof who along with most of his fellow media lapdogs rarely pass on the opportunity to take shots at 71

Still... wouldn't surprise me. This team is so weird and often regrettable with how they treat the team's like... third-ish best player ever.

I'd get a new coach before going to town on the roster.

Even if you're a tear it down to the studs kinda fan, wouldn't you want to rebuild some their value instead of selling them at their lowest?
The team is probably really excited about Sullivan "developing" the next crop of Pens players. The team letting him down so much is just unfortunate

Sell off what you can.

Top 5 pick this year.

Then sell off what you can. Bring up WBS kids. Sign a couple cheapos. Run Malkin with Sid so those two can have a good year together with it being Malkin's last year.

Get 1OV in 2026.

Gear up for the next chapter.

I highly doubt Malkin is legitimately available. I would put it like: 100% Sid is unavailable. Malkin is 98% unavailable meaning if someone sends a blow your pants off offer for some odd reason, you at least take it to him. Letang is 50% unavailable. Karlsson IS available I would say.

Probably not. I'm so disgusted with this organization that I kinda hope he does get the usual "traded and degraded" thing that this fanbase and media do to it's outgoing players and he goes on to put up like 90 points somewhere else and continue to play for another couple of productive years. That would be kinda cool if not really unfortunate as far as legacies go.

We've been through this enough.

When everyone on the roster looks like shit. It's not the players.

When you have players like Granlund who looks like the worst player in the world and then goes and puts up 78 points in 86 games, it's the coach.

Sid was upset when they traded Jake. I can’t imagine how pissed he would be if they traded Geno.
Yet he somehow doesn’t want to play for another coach either? I’d rather Sully go than Geno if I’m Sid lol…

Speaking of…another call to fire the coach from Gretz…

I mean, you can say Geno and Tang are 100% available but both have an NMC and, against all common sense, are probably unlikely to sign off on a trade.

I don't think the coach/roster debate is an either/or thing. You both fire Sullivan and nuke the roster.
i don't know how anyone could think we are going to win a trade from where we are at. you can't count on winning a trade. it's 50-50 at best and from where we are it's not going to be best. we might be able to win some in the future (picks & prospects) but not in the here and now. we have too little to trade. it wasn't hard to see and it why i wanted to keep this year's pick.

Tear it down simply for GM Sullivan to implement the exact carbon copy as a replacement - somehow with even less offense.

It makes no sense to build ANOTHER roster under the guy. Every single team he's headed up look the same - the replacement pieces are all but guaranteed to also look the same. The incoming roster is going to be flat, completely allergic to physicality, and made up of PKing grinders who can't score. You HAVE to fire Sullivan & co first.

But also to your point - at least increase the values a bit before the selloff. Then again, new coach comes in and we somehow string together 3-5 games and we're suddenly buyers who think the WC2 spot gives us a shot at competing.

Yeah, roster sucks. Been saying it for years because it's been the same for years. I can't remember the last time we defended worth a shit, had goaltending, or were more than a 1 line team. This year when he splits Sid/Geno we literally generate no offense. So we're more of a one line team than ever before and we can't even set that one line up because our defense sucks so badly.

Indeed. I can't imagine anyone in the Pittsburgh media would try degrading Malkin though - except Madden.

No one is going to disagree that Sullivan is about 95% of the issue.

Fact is though, Granlund was still a bad trade. He wasn't a true need and Hextall way overpaid. The difference though is how you choose to frame the discussion. According to YOU:

Trade for Granlund and he stinks: Oh, that's clearly not Hextall's fault. It's Sullivan's fault. Look at his stats now!
Trade for Karlsson and he stinks: Oh, it's clearly Dubas's fault. His stats in SJ be damned, it's all Dubas's fault. How could he have done this!?

You rarely argue in good faith which is why so many people have issues with you so often.

How funny is it that everyone said the big-brain move this year was to take on shit players, build their value and flip them for futures.

Turns out there was a BIG part of that plan that was pretty flawed. Boy I'm just... flabbergasted. Didn't see that coming.
