Taylor Haase said that Dubas, Spezza, and Amanda Kessel are all in town for Sabres/Canadiens today. He's done some scouting trips recently that people assumed were Team Canada related but Haase thinks that him bringing Spezz and Kessel along suggest there might be something else there.

No idea what we'd want from either of those teams nor they from us

It's the Habs Dubas is scouting. He's been flying over to watch their games over the past 3 weeks. Habs haven't been scouting the Penguins, so would it be safe to assume Dubas is looking to move picks/prospects?

Not sure. If it is the Habs that seems like an odd couple of trading partners. Neither team is trying to contend, so neither team wants to add players. So what are they even bothering with?

Wasn't there talk around Letang requesting a trade to Montreal? I assumed it was BS but..

I feel like teams scouting other teams is always a meme. There's always that one team that shows up to like 15 games and then nothing happens
It's hard to gauge Dubas. He watches a lot of hockey, just to watch hockey. I remember an article from last year, he was in WBS for the Baby Pens and went to a local high school tourney.

Jarry for Anderson or Matheson or something goofy like that makes sense I guess.
Jarry for Matheson wouldn't be goofy. That would be a MASSIVE win for us.

Assuming the deal is with Montreal and Dubas is going to those lengths, my guess is that it means the return has a significant contract as well. It would make sense that all three get a good look at whoever they are looking at to determine if they are a viable candidate to add to the team.

I wouldn't shock me to see a trade of: Jarry+DOC for Anderson or Gallagher.

If it was Armia or Dvorak or even Savard, I don't think there's a discussion. You just do it since they are on expiring deals. But this level of scouting means there are likely longer-term implications, hence the contracts of Anderson or Gallagher. I think Gallagher is a fan favorite in Montreal so I'm giving the educated guess that they are there scouting Anderson.

4 trades happened last year from October until before the deadline:

All of them pretty much meaningless for the active roster.
I expect more of the same this year, outside of perhaps a goalie trade.

Yeah, Montreal is last in the East. I can't see them wanting any of our high priced vets.
Maybe Glass or Puustinen for a pick? Or waiver eligible player?

The one thing that Nashville fans said of Glass was that he was indeed made of Glass. So this tracks.

I haven't had any issue with Hayes on the 4th line. Getting a 2nd and a 3rd to take him with what he's provided, it's really, REALLY hard to complain.

Yeah, Nieto will get a conditioning stint and then a couple games out of respect. I think he's on his way to being an AHL journeyman. That said, if waived, Colorado might bring him back for free. I can see the horrendous injustices of giving him unearned time though because it IS Sullivan.

Puljujarvi-Eller-Puustinen
Beau-Lizotte-Acciari

makes a TON of sense. Too bad we won't see it.
Acciari in a 3rd line role over anyone that has more offense than him makes zero sense, by putting Puustinen on the 4th line, it's like he wants to see that line fail in heavy defensive usage with Beau, Lizotte, and Puusty. Acciari is meant for that shit.

Color me absolutely shocked that Sullivan would play a 4th line grinder on the third line and play an offensive young guy on the 4th line getting 7 minutes per game.

This must be a new thing for him. That's like the opposite of Sullivan's M.O., after all.

As I said, the scouting makes it seem like the Pens would be moving picks/prospects while the Habs would be moving a roster player.

It would be utterly bizarre for the Pens to pay picks or prospects for anything. Dubas is well aware this team has no chance to compete.

I could maybe see them making like a "bad player for bad player" type deal to try and give Sullivan another player to work with. But adding to this roster while subtracting futures? Makes no sense

Does it? He’s been peddling a half foot in and half foot out approach since day one.

Guarantee Dubas continues to fill out the roster with useless depth pieces after Sully is gone. Same narrative was true in Toronto.

He's peddling the half in/half out because he wants to try and be competitive and doesn't want to trade Crosby, Malkin or Letang and go full rebuild. But he also knows he can't trade any youth because we need all of the ones we have for the future. Which is also why he tried to fill out the roster around those guys with cheap depth pieces. Also, due to cap and likely what options were available... he went this route, trying to buy low on a few guys hoping to hit home runs.

Realistically, this is the directive he's received from the ownership group. It'll be interesting to see what happens if the team continues to flounder, and what their (GM and ownership's) timeline is to pull the plug on either Sully (who I believe Dubas really doesn't want to can), Dubas (unlikely) or continuing to try and buy their way out of this without having to go full rebuild.

Here's the reality... we all knew this was coming. We've had almost 2 decades of pure joy. 18 years in the POs, 4 finals, 3 cups... all while watching one of the best players in history do his thing. Is this shitshow annoying? Absolutely. Especially how it's currently playing out. We might have been able to extend things if we'd found a 2c (either via trade or FA), or a very high end winger to help carry L2. But both Crosby and Malkin's games are slowing down with how they're executing game in/game out. But again... we knew this was going to happen. They need more help than they did before... and they don't really have it.... and we're seeing the results of that.

And we are also seeing a GM who traded Jake Guentzel for Michael Bunting and "win now" prospects while peddling that he wanted it to "compete now".

We are seeing a GM who traded Yager for McGroarty with the illusional that he'd contribute to today's roster.

That's the issue. I have no problem rebuilding, but do it correctly. And you don't have to trade the big three, but focus on making moves that leveraging us into getting 1sts, not late 2nds and 3rds.

Hasse saying that Dubas has let the league know that everyone but Sid is available.

That's nice and all but that doesn't do much when half the roster has a NMC or NTC. Also just ignores the rotten and moldy problem on the team
Obviously the correct decision, but it's a "I'll believe it when I see it situation" and I'm not hopeful Dubas is gonna get the best possible return for any of the guys.
