Friedman with some Penguins thoughts in his column. Along with musing about Dubas' press conference, he included these nuggets:

1. If teams are allowed to try to extend Guentzel before a trade, that hurts Edmonton. They can’t do it. The Oilers are also very aware that for every dollar that comes in, someone needs to go out. So, they are doing legwork in several different directions.

2. Please recognize that this is manifesting purely in my head. But, as I watch Daniel Alfredsson on the bench in Ottawa, I can’t help but wonder if the Senators consider a Karlsson reunion. At least, brainstorm it. Yes, it’s complicated and yes, everyone would have to be on board. But no one mind-melds with Karlsson like Alfredsson, and, since it got into my head, I can’t stop thinking about the possibility of it.

3. Speaking of reunions, what does everyone think of Reilly Smith and Florida?

I never looked at it that way for Ottawa, but it makes a lot of sense!! Start making calls KD and hurry up

There is just no way Karlsson sticks around here. He was trying to go to a winner. This is a sinking ship. We can retain another $3-4m making him count $6-7m against an acquiring team's cap. Get at least a first back.
I'd retain 50% personally. I'd just fear we have all this cap space and blow it on say Huberdeau along with a 1st. :/

What are our guys even worth? I have paid so little attention, I don't even know.

If the Oilers can't extend Jake, trade him there and then re-sign him in the offseason.

If Karlsson wants to go to a winner so bad, he's probably not going to accept a trade to Ottawa, one of the few teams worse than the Pens.

Shame Nylander just can’t figure out how to score on nhl goalies. Decent deal

Isn't Bemstrom a decent young player? Surprised the Jackets couldn't have gotten something better than a good AHLer and a 6th for him.

69 points in 204 games is about a pace of 30 points per 82 games, which isn't anything special but seems serviceable for the ice time he has received.

Bemstrom is a skilled winger with a big shot. Plays either wing. In a vacuum, good move. In a Mike Sullivan-led world, good luck Mr. Bemstrom! You are going to need it. Start watching YouTube highlights of Jansen Harkins (if you can find any). That is who you need to become.

On another note, let's not do something moronic like trade Erik Karlsson, ok? I know, his contract for his level of production is not good. But we all saw how good he can be when the Sens almost knocked us out of the playoffs a few years back. Yeah, he is not the player he used to be, but he is less than a year removed from 100-plus points. He is a coaching change away from getting back to respectable levels. Let's not mess that up. If not Sullivan, you have to think that Dubas could fire some assistants, no? I am on the keep Karlsson train, sorry. Our three legends are going to need his production, and so are our (eventual) kids.

Last point. Does anybody else find it ironic that the big three want to keep Sullivan at all cost (allegedly), yet they all witnessed (twice) what a coaching change can do for an organization (i.e. win a frickin' Stanley Cup!)? This is funny to me, though not the ha-ha variety.

It’s not ironic if you really just want to wind down your career having fun playing hockey with your friends, who all have retirement contracts too, including your coach…as opposed to actually winning again lol
