Kyle Dubas is probably saying; I think we are one good powerplay away from being a great team with a chance at a cup run. To be honest, he's not wrong. The pens are 48 games in with this terrible powerplay. I'm glad they replaced Karlsson with Letang against Montreal. I'm personally done with the Karlsson experiment on the first PP unit, it just doesn't work. I'm glad Sully and company is now feeling the heat of this season getting out of hand. Hopefully Letang will stay on the first unit for the remainder of the season, hopefully....
He wouldn't be wrong, but how do they fix it? I'm not sure the PP lineup adjustments will work well enough. I also don't know what kind of powerplay player would be available, they desperately need a sniper or a quality crease player.

People act like the rebuild is gonna be agony. As if this team hasn't been borderline unwatchable for like 70% of their games over the past handful of years.

Gimme that zero expectations, underdog shit while we watch the progress and development of genuine top tier prospects over this slow, death by attrition of the era 11 times out of 10.
I like when a team rebuilds, just means the they are closer to becoming a great team in the future again. Why Bob Nutting never has any success with the Pirates at all.. Does not understand PNC park was built for MLB fans to enjoy good baseball. He loves his money more than baseball and the fans at some point are just not going to show up anymore.

Looks like Guentzel could be as good as gone.... Of course this stuff always goes on in the NHL https://thehockeynews.com/nhl/pitts...el-rejects-contract-offer-pittsburgh-penguins
We all heard that Geno and Letang rejected Hextall’s initial offers too. This is all part of the negotiating process. Dubas gives his initial offer — which is never his max offer — Guentzel and his camp counter and they move from there.

Will Guentzel end up re-signing? Your guess is as good as mine. But I don’t think him rejecting Dubas’s first offer means he’s as good as gone either.

With a decent powerplay, this team could have easily 60 points right now.

They were forcing Karlsson in the first half of the season to play on the first unit because of who he is, but after 46 games, clearly it's not working. They are reliable source sometimes... I think it is time to trade Malkin, Geuntzel for cap reasons and maybe Erik Karlsson for cap reasons... These guy cannot get it done on this kind of team anymore.
They are right like a broken clock is right twice a day

The PP has nothing to do with who is on it

It's not that hard for a league of scrubs to be better than them

Why is it this hard for this team?

You know the answer. But you like Sullivan. So it has to be EK. Or Geno. Or Rust.
Jesse Marshall was on the Locked On Penguins podcast yesterday discussing the PP and he’s a big proponent of the theory that the structure is the problem…sure, he says Dallas plays the same umbrella the Pens do but Hintz takes over and moves in the slot and the rest of the players (mostly younger) move around so that there are options to shoot from everywhere but that the presence of Hintz in the slot, where he will shoot, opens up other lanes…short of having someone who can do that really well and a lot of movement by others, the Pens should move from an umbrella to a 2-1-2, which puts three guys down low…he says the Pens biggest problem w their umbrella is that the half wall and top guys get easily trapped by aggressive PKs these days and they can’t get the puck down low…the change in structure would help that…he puts this on the coaches mostly

I mean, just get somebody--literally any body--to park their ass in the goalie's face and all these perimeter shots become a lot more threatening. Jake's phenomenal at deflections but he's not a disruptive presence. He doesn't draw PKers down low or take away the goalie's sight lines standing 4' off to the side of the crease trying to tip pucks.

The team doesn't have a Hornqvist, but shit, throw Carter in front. Just anybody on the roster willing to take the punishment and screen the goalie.

I wonder how much of this is practicing against our PK. Our PK is very passive at the top of the zone as the weakside forward drifts back to cover the bumper guy. Our top PK would give up the D-to-D passes for the full 2 minutes if the opponents didn't get bored. Whereas our opponents put pressure on that pass and force turnovers.

I'd be remiss to not mention for the 1000th time that the entries are a huge problem, and for all Sid gets pumped for his faceoffs this year he sure loses a lot of them on the powerplay (when they actually matter).

The only difference would be 58 and 71 playing hot potato at the blueline with the puck instead of EK and 71 playing hot potato at the blueline with the puck. Either way, we end up with an lot
perimeter passing to go along with the interceptions and ensuing odd-man rushes the other way.

Also EK has a better shot. You’ll see if he ever ends up using it.

Which again is not the point I am making. We no longer have the horses, why are we even pretending we can execute the system? We should be changing the system, because no overhaul of the roster (and we have had 3 significant ones) can run the “system”.
You’re saying the same thing as I am. This system won 2 Cups but they don’t have the players to execute it anymore.

I guess everyone wanting the rebuild doesn't remember pre-Sid. Talk about trash. Those were some great times remember signing up for the news letter and getting free tickets because the team was so bad they couldn't drag people in? Can't wait to see another product like that woo hoo! Yager with DOC and Rust on the top line will be amazing. Running out Poulin Pulli and Puusy. 3 Ps line 2 nice. I can't wait for the first year of the rebuild to get on here to read the "this team blows" whining they are so bad they are unwatchable.

The word of the day "unwatchable" makes me laugh. Don't watch. If you aren't watching you shouldn't care what happens. If you don't care what happens why keep bitching about what you aren't watching? Weird.

Dan Focht and Brian Holzinger were the greetest.

Their PP was 14th last season and the PK was 16th.

The PK the year before was 3rd best, it slipped 13 spots the following year and this year it's just 4 spots better at 12th best and again is the players the issue? This team added solid PK capable players. I believe Vellucci and Sullivan partner up for the PK at times. It's been mediocre for two seasons straight. Even in 2020-21 they were pretty f***ing bad with a 27th ranked PK and then in 2021-22 they jumped to 3rd best and then dropped again and then stayed in the middle of the pack since. The Pens PK used to be something the team could rely on.

The PP the year before was 19th and it actually got better to 14th and they still missed the playoffs and they were better last year than this year. This year for it to rank 31st after getting Karlsson is comical. It doesn't matter if it connected more often because all it'd do is mask more of the coaching problems. For it to be this bad is showing everyone the Pens problems laid bare for all to see.

Special teams are important for sure, but the Jets for example have the 24th best PP and 25th best PK, yet they're 4th in the West. Saying the special teams are the only reason is weak.

The team can keep getting these "needs" but as much as blokes hate hearing it, it always boils down to usage and the Pens system. It'll always be bizarre that Sullivan doesn't think matching lines matters.

The most rewarding things in life take blood, sweat and tears to achieve. It isn't supposed to be fun and easy.
What's necessary is necessary. Our 5 Cups were built off of the dark years.

Would you prefer they stay in bubble pretender limbo forever?
Something clearly needs to be done. Pens fans, of all people, should understand this.

How does that mean good as gone? He rejected 6 years, lots of room left on the negotiation table to get to 8 years (which Jake rightfully deserves). Not sure how it's surprising he would reject a 6 year deal.

At least Dubas is negotiating - some of those Toronto contracts are scary.

We're not, but we're close. I just think that it's time to completely dispense with the pretense that this team can play this system with roster changes. It's totally impossible even for Sid to play this system for 82 games now, and he's the only one who could probably do it. I'm also not a fan of the system in the abstract either, but that's because I'm not a fan of this low-event hockey; I like physicality and goals and agitation, and I'll admit it's not everyone's taste.

post on your main, dude.

Anyhow, the Gen X years were tons of fun if you went because it's fun to watch a team when you have no expectations of winning anything and you can root for them as longshots. Honest. If you don't remember how excited that team and arena was when Kelly Buchberger finally got a goal, I don't know what to tell you. Those GenX teams were terrible, but damn were they likeable.

I'd very much rather watch a terrible team with heart than a mediocre team that constantly squanders its potential and refuses to acknowledge that there might be a problem.

Rebuilds are fun as hell simply because we can root for potential and we have no expectations. If this club was like "yeah, we're not going to make it to the playoffs anymore, but we want these dudes to have one more season together" I'd be much more into it than pretending that we're only a PP (which we refuse to change) and some bad bounces away from a deep playoff run.
