The issue is once again that Jeff Carter needs scratched.

Harkins does not have NHL skill but he buzzes around out there fine. Same with Acciari. Carter himself is absolutely toast and is just ringing the puck up the wall and praying it stops short of icing the moment he touches the puck in the D-Zone.

A willingness to upgrade the bottom-6 has include Jeff Carter being scratched again.
I agree. He’s been scratched, so there’s a will, it just needs to be way more often.

Maybe Acciari - White is 2/3rds of a solid 4th. Maybe Poulin rounds it out. Poulin - Acciari - White has a ring to it. And while we assess we can look at what the cost of a Robinson or Duhaime might be just in case Poulin isn’t ready or White doesn’t cut it.

Forgot about Puljujarvi. He’s not what I’d call a prototypical 4th liner but Dubas wouldn’t have even bothered with the tryout if he was satisfied with our bottom-6.

Puljujarvi has skill and it shows in the AHL But he is simply not the grinder the Pens need here. Poulin up to be the 4th line center with Acciari to RW makes sense. Noeto is out so Harkins is a body who has some size and occasional bang, Sullivan plays them at his discretion anyway. Carter just isn't good enough to force a play and play the kind of D a bottom 6 winger is required to do.

It remains true that trading Guentzel without getting a haul back (nobody gets a haul for UFAs to be, every year people have to re-learn that) doesn't make sense unless he absolutely doesn't want to stay.

Pens should call up Poulin, sign Puljujarvi and try to swing a deal for a goal scoring winger or middle six C. They should also fire some coaches but there's no way that happens with them a few points out of 3rd in the Metro.

Yeah I think given that, his injuries and what I assume is low interest in him amongst other teams I’d offer him a 2-way deal but make it clear he might stay down in WB/S until a middle or top 6 spot opens up.

With the surgeries and missing camp and a few months of regular season he might not even be 100% for a while longer.

So basically half our team is really slow…thanks, hadn’t noticed lol
Jeff Carter being up there is kinda funny, curious where he finished last year because he does seem to have better legs this season. Wonder if that's supported by data.

He also tweeted the Leafs as well if anyones curious.

To be buyers or sellers and still have the same problematic coach is the main issue with this team. There is no addition or subtraction that makes this team better because the coach that is the problem, remains the problem.

Agreed, HOG. However, this coach ( I firmly believe) has a lifetime contract with Fenway Sports Group. He is their guy. I think he will outlast Dubas, and he will outlast Crosby, Malkin and Letang. And probably even Karlsson.

He may even outlast us all! :(

I don't think there's much argument there, personally. Smith/Raks/Rust are a big bucket of vanilla slime.

Also what's up with people wanting to move Ned? I would absolutely move the other one wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy first. Did the team give Jarry some batshit trade clauses I forgot about or is the logic that his contact sucks so bad nobody will take it?

For me, it is simple. The team made a commitment to Jarry and he has repaid them with strong play in the first half. Does his contract suck? I guess. He is also one of the youngest players on the team! Sad but true. I like Nedeljkovic but as a pending UFA, he probably has the type of value he may never have again at this year's deadline. Time to cash in, imo.

Incidentally, Cap Friendly says Jarry's contract has a modified no-trade clause every season. He can say no to 12 teams.

No one wants four more years of Rakell at $5M let alone another year at $5M for Smith without one of their crappy overpaid and likely older players coming back…Rust isn’t going anywhere for at least another year…we do have to get younger and Jake is really the only way to do it successfully, meaning with something useful coming back

I think you are right about Rakell, unfortunately. Smith, I am not so sure. Players with Stanley Cup pedigree are overvalued at the trade deadline. I think he could bring back a draft pick, which I would take and run at this point. Ditto Lars Eller, who has some value.

As for Rust, that full no-movement clause is ridiculous but perhaps he would be willing to move it if a true contender (cough, Canucks, cough) showed interest. That would be our only hope.

I would much rather move Rust, Eller, Nedeljkovic and Smith for picks/prospects and re-sign Guentzel. We would not be waving the towel completely, and at least we get to keep the best thing this team has in the Crosby-Guentzel combination.

Hopefully, those picks/prospects can net us some help for Malkin on the second line (even if not immediate returns).

Bottom line: we are screwed.

Guessing the Flyer with the top speed is Poehling?

So we're not necessarily slow; other than our first line, we have no burst, which might explain why we can't beat faster teams to the puck in corners and against the boards. Maybe explains - at least in part - why we can't maintain control of the puck on the PP? Who knows.

Speed and bursts aren't our biggest problems - it's finishing and the PP.

Columbus is such a shit show. Too bad they consider the Pens "rivals" and wouldn't trade Laine and or Jiricek to Pittsburgh :naughty:

Speaking of Laine:

Wishing him the best.

Didn't see this posted anywhere:

To follow up on this

14. Harkins
29. Zohorna
33. O'Conner
76. Rust
83. Carter

Meanwhile, Malkin is a contender for worst in the league. Acciari is also there, rarely skates fast.

Robinson & Duhaime in the top 75 and pending UFAs on bad teams.

Robinson for my money is a top 10 skater in the league.

Korpisalo is a big yikes this year. If he was option B, be happy we took option A lol.

For real. I wanted a new goalie duo. Preferred Korpisalo and Talbot. The duo of Jarry and Nedeljkovic have been better than I expected. But Ottawa sucks. Though Korpi's advanced stats indicate he's just not good this season.

Should the Pens make the playoffs, we'll see how that goes.

Hail Mary situation.

Trade Smith get 2nd or 3rd.

Trade for Lindholm to be 2C sign him to his 8x8 or whatever.

Get this team going for the next 2 years.

- PLD in LA has zero trade protections this year and a full NMC starting next season. Could really leverage LA into dealing him before the TDL. 8.5 against the cap, his biggest signing bonus (8M) already behind him. Only 25 y/o
- Kadri (CGY) has an edge I'd like to see on this team. Cost controlled at 7M per year and has full trade protections right now (NMC) - so you might lower the return on him if Calgary were to play ball. Added bonus: his NMC turns into a M-NTC (13 team no-trade) in 2026...so if our wheels are off we could get further value down the line.
- Lindholm is a pure rental right now and will not be traded here without a big price going back. We should steer clear. However, if we made that decision in a sign/tade fashion - he's a bit older at 29 and will be 30 this year. So you're signing another over-30 contract for long term....he's good - but idk.

Still - the idea of getting a tweener 1C/2C has been quite necessary for several seasons now and I hope the FO gets their heads out of their collective asses and gets on it. Team is going nowhere without one. I love Geno but man - he needs help. I also don't know how much longer Sid is going to be able to carry all the mail on L1 - but that's a fight for another day. If we ship Guentzel I'd love to make a play at someone like Marner to balance L1 out.

I would be interested in Kadri as a low buy in number.
Lindholm would have to be a sign and trade.

As much as I find PLD as a unique big guy. I have 0 interest in a guy who doesn't want to play on not 1 but 2 teams. Then proceeds to not play well on the 3rd team he wanted to be on.
