I would not be signing Jake to a friggin’ 7 year contract…he shouldn’t be signed for more than 5 years with the first two only being NMC…personally wouldn’t sign him at all especially if we miss the playoffs this season…

speaking of trade candidates, people keep floating him around but he’s worth nothing lol…see Addison

This paragraph sums it up for me. With my additive that he's a low cost player and that has value for this team that is right up against the cap

The second is that it really does not make much sense for the Penguins to even consider shopping Joseph or trading Joseph, unless he is part of a larger deal as an add-in. As flawed as he might be, as little as the Penguins might trust him, he is still an NHL caliber defenseman, still young, still talented and somebody that can be useful to you. If the only value for a player like that is an lesser prospect and a late-round scratch off lottery ticket there is almost no point.

5 years at 8.75 or 7 years at 7.25. Do you want that extra 1.5 mil in cap space and bite the bullet the last 2 years, or do you pay more now.

I didn't want to trade POJ over the summer but that was definitely the time to do it. No one is ever near their max trade value when they're sitting in the press box.

Per the league's media Web site, goaltender Joel Blomqvist is now on the Penguins' NHL roster. Defenseman John Ludvig (concussion) is now listed as being designated to injured reserve.

Pens Dubas will set the parameters here. Jake with home town discount. He is Sid LW and to me that is a qualifier as to his production. Jake simply doesn't drive the play anymore. I like Rakell as his away from the puck play is far better and he will come around as to scoring. Much too much cap hit for a Nylander at over 10 with 7 years. I am not sure Sid will extend now. I thought he was good for at least another year but maybe no. Sid gone after 2024 make all this mute. Hextall kinds had a 3 year plan here when signing Rust, Geno, RR and Letang. I still think that is the case. Dubas may just be in that camp here and begin a retool after next year.

I'm expecting Guentzel to get something like a 6 year, $8.5 million extension where the trade restrictions at the end are much less than they are at the beginning. I'd be fine with that kind of deal.

Yeah, I think Jake's just costing himself money by not trying to push the envelope with term tbh. A five or six year deal is about as good as it's gonna get imo. Don't think there's any way he takes less than five, and if it's shorter, I expect a higher AAV.

I'm conflicted re: Jake.

I see him as more valuable to the team than many people here seem to.

With that said, I understand that signing him to a medium-to-long term deal at a high AAV (as his play commands) could handcuff this team 3+ years from now.

The org seems committed to the "win now" philosophy, and I personally don't see him commanding the type of return that helps us win now. I could be wrong, and if I am, I'd be happy to see him moved in such a way that we are still able to compete now (with the bonus that we aren't hurt later).

But barring that, I'd be happy to see him extended.

I'm not sure the "win now at all costs" approach is the best course to take for a team that hasn't seen the 2nd round in going on six years, but that won't stop 'em from continuing their fun little game of make believe they've got going.

Team should work the phones all season and fleece somebody at the deadline for Jake at 50% retained. Some organization out there will be chomping at the bit to take the next step toward competing and they'll overpay for a guy with Jake's resume. Not a doubt in my mind. The team should find the best return they can and run with it. But again, they won't.

They will if they’re out of the playoff picture and they should…there is zero reason to resign Jake if we don’t make the playoffs this season…if not now, then not next year either

Not a chance in hell, my man. They could be in last place in the east and they still probably wouldn't trade Jake this season. They should, but they won't.

I cant believe Dubas would be that wasteful and stupid asset-wise, but we’ll see…if so, I hope FSG has an out clause on his contract lol

It's not so wasteful if the Pens get good value in return -- and then bring Jake right back by signing him as a free agent after the season. I'm not suggesting that they SHOULD re-sign Jake, but from an asset standpoint we get something (maybe even something good) for living without Jake for just a couple of months.

Edit: misunderstood what you meant by "wasteful", but a brief vacation for Jake still might be something they could (but won't) consider.

Disagree about shopping Jake. What's the point?

I will say his deal need not include a crippling NTC.

I'll wait to reserve judgement for the post-Sid era for Dubas, because this era's all about gently guiding the plane down in a field before tearing it all down. Dude's signed for 7 years iirc, so he's gonna have to earn his keep down the road.

Still, if Karlsson hadn't forced his way onto the Pens this summer, Dubas' first off season would've been doooooogshit.

Keeping Jake, regardless of the team's position in the standings, and locking into an extended deal with him this summer is exactly the kind of stupid, zero foresight, predictable move I expect from this team anymore.

The point is to make a move potentially a day early as opposed to waiting too late in order to get some relatively significant pieces for the post-Sid era to try and reduce the misery of the rebuild. No, the team's not getting a foundation stone for an impeding UFA like Jake, but you still need pieces besides your franchise players if you're gonna build a genuine contender. Also, to not lock into an absurd deal with a dude who rides Sid's coattails, and likely becomes unpalatable for teams once Crosby retires.

Everybody gets a NTC of some sort nowadays. With a bigger contract like Jake's about to get? You can assume it's gonna be crippling as shit. I'm expecting a full NMC for the first two or three years, then something like an 8-12 team accepted list submitted every July 1st, ensuring this team gets some schlub C-tier prospect and a cap dump when they eventually move him.

I dunno, I realize I'm out on an island with Jake because people have (imo) crazy views on the guy, but he's a leech and this team would do well to finally make a proactive move in dealing him at the deadline for a big return as opposed to doing the same thing they did with Rust--just orders of magnitude worse.

I meant that if we’re out of the playoffs, we should be trading UFAs at the deadline…it’s terrible asset management not to

but I also don’t think they should resign him if we miss the playoffs….get some young guys in here

They're gonna trade for Karlsson and then sell their best winger? What?

(I'm assuming you were also out on Karlsson though.)

No, I wouldn't do anything a day earlier than necessary. Why are people so horny to have no stars on the team?

I'm with you on the NTC, I would need to have an out on Jake down the line, but will the money be "crippling" to a rebuilding team?

Maybe we can recoup an extra 15-25th pick for Jake which turns into us giving SJ a top ten pick next year cause we truly suck.

Sounds like asset-managing ourselves to the fat part of the bell curve. I'd rather just let it ride until the core retires.

Karlsson fell into their lap for basically free, my dude--or as free as someone of Karlsson's caliber gets. It cost the team a nobody prospect, two inflated contracts/cap dumps, a backup goalie, a 1st and a 2nd. They didn't go out big game hunting and bag a superstar, a superstar forced his way to Pittsburgh (lol of all places). Karlsson wanted out of San Jose and it was down to Pittsburgh and Carolina, and Carolina didn't even have a genuine interest. It was a matter of Dubas shifting around cap for guys nobody wanted so he could fit Karlsson. I love the pick up, but people acting like the team snapped him up out of the blue are being disingenuous imo.

I'd be fine keeping Jake if Sid didn't have a year and a half of hockey left before he got to decide whether to keep plodding around on a bottom feeder or retire. The shitty part is that this is all happening at just about the worst possible time. The team's been circling the drain for years, they're gonna be fighting tooth and nail to be a team hovering around a WC spot from here on out.

I don't know. Keeping Jake (while I realize it's a near-100% chance to happen) seems asinine. Driven by sentiment and a refusal to accept that this team's f***ing washed. I'll take a 1st and a Yager-tier or better prospect for Jake and run with it. He's not the difference between this team competing and not, and I don't really care about his point totals given the opportunity that's heaped upon him by being stapled to Sid's hip and given top PP time.
