Erik Karlsson, Lars Eller, Ryan Graves and Marcus Pettersson are all wearing neck guards.

• Plenty of skill drills to start. Both rinks are going to be used today.

• During 5-on-3 drills Rickard Rakell is taking reps on Power Play 1, swapping spots with Reilly Smith, who was on Power Play 2. During 5-on-4, Smith was back on the first Power Play line.

Jeff Carter is not on the Power Play today. Vinnie Hinostroza takes his spot.

PP1 Line: Smith, Sidney Crosby, Jake Guentzel, Evgeni Malkin, Karlsson

PP2: Kris Letang, Hinostroza, Radim Zohorna, Rakell, Bryan Rust

• Lines:

Guentzel-Crosby-Rust

Smith-Malkin-Rakell

O'Connor-Eller-Zohorna

Nieto-Acciari-Hinostroza

Graves-Letang

Pettersson-Karlsson

Shea-Ruhwedel
No Carter in the lineup. I may have to start Lamaze breathing.
Interesting on the neck guards. Are they the velcro kind or something else?
I have one that looks like a dickie. It's kevlar and fairly lightweight. Looks and wears like a turtleneck. Won't do much against impact but I won't get cut either.

Yea they've come a long way. Back in the day (even like 15 yrs ago) it looked like one of those football neck rolls. Now they're made of cut resistant material like Kevlar.

The main complaint for players is that it's another layer that keeps them from cooling off fully.

I've been shitting on Sullivan for the arrogance in trying to tell EK65 how to play hockey, but credit where credit is due if he actually scratches a vet that is underperforming with Carter.

I'm thinking of getting a neck guard as well for beer league. The problem is the one I want is sold out because people are rushing to buy it. These ones are supposedly highly rated in terms of safety and I want to get one, but will probably have to wait a few months to do so: Skate Armor | #1 Best Rated Hockey Neck Guard.

Also if Carter is indeed scratched (I'll believe it when I see it) it's funny that it took all the way until this season to happen. And ironically he's actually playing better this season imo than he did last year, apart from the fact that he isn't scoring. He's not getting caved as badly on the ice as he was last year.

YeahI remember the huge padded ones that were super uncomfortable. I didn't forget why I stopped wearing it back in the day.

I basically have this: Kevlar Neck Guard

It's not official hockey equipment but still works quite well. In my two leagues, we split time inside and outside (3 sides enclosed) so it gets chilly from time to time in the winter.

Karlsson on wearing a neck guard at today's practice:

Just trying it out - it is available for us. The magnitude of the situation that unfortunately happened puts a lot of things in perspective. I think that we all have families and friends - we do this because we love to do this and we get paid well to do it and stuff like that, but at the end of the day, we do it cause it’s a choice. I don’t think anyone would keep doing it if it meant risking your life every day going out there. If you can wear a small piece of equipment to hopefully prevent something like that again, I think that’s a win. We’re going to try it out for the foreseeable future and see if I can wear it regularly. I hope I can and I hope more and more guys try to do the same at least.

In high school you had to have a neck guard. Literally got pulled off the ice before a face off by a ref because I forgot it. Had to go the locker room and put it on.

I’ve never played ice hockey, worst I’ve had was in elementary school took a hotitzer of a shot from an adult in the lacrosse box to eye eyeball with those cement feeling balls. Can’t imagine what a puck would feel like or even a skate.

Lotta bad stuff going on but Eller is a bright spot. Not only playing well but seemingly taking a leadership role, talks to media a lot and takes ownership after bad games and leading by example on the ice. When the team itself has needed to do more of some particular thing he plays that way.
Eller would've been a good Staal replacement from the get go

Yeah this season is pretty much over and the west coast trip where we at best go 1-1-1 will be the nail in the coffin.

I'll surprised if we even force OT

Karlsson knows all too well how f***ed up skate cuts can be. Good on him for taking the lead.

Still bewilders me how some people think Cooke sliced him on purpose like he's f***ing Dexter or Hannibal Lecter or something

It looks like Malkin’s elite 2017-18 season is being underrated again on the polls board, can’t believe Ovechkin is leading him for that season:

That poll is going to be garbage. From 2018 to 2023 all it will say is McDavid...surprised his rookie year he wasn't at the top (it was close...).

Zohorna has more goals than Kapanen in fewer games and a harder overall role.

Vancouver is getting lucky. Their goals scored and goals compared to their expected goals is way out of whack. It's the opposite of the Pens - where the Pens should have way more goals than they've actually scored, Vancouver has scored more and prevented more than they should have.

And that's why it's ridiculous to give serious evaluation to teams and players this early.

Zohorna. The guy who sully sent down to start the season?

Have avoided all Pens related social media and forums for 5 days, has Mike Sullivan been fired yet? If not, are there any reason to come back?
