I don't understand this Dubas vs. Hextall debate. They're both awful in their own ways, and it's silly to pit them against each other. The much, much bigger problem is ownership and their commitment to Sullivan. Sully has sucked since 2018, surviving Rutherford (left in 2021), Hextall, and now Dubas. Both Hextall and Dubas tried to give Sully "his" type of players to fill out his outdated two scoring lines/two checking lines approach. It hasn't come close to being successful, now six years later. EVERYTHING points to an ownership group with 100 percent dedication to Sullivan, no matter how little success he has; thereby handcuffing whoever is at the "helm" of the team.
I think the funniest statement by FSG is in August of 2022 in a precursor to the upcoming shit show 2 seasons in a row. It's like you read that comment and then the Wonder Years Voice (The awesome Daniel Stern) saying "We soon learned, that was not the case" type of shit.

The quote?

“He has clearly demonstrated what an effective leader he is,” said Fenway Sports Group owner John Henry. “And it’s evident how well players respond to his philosophy and work ethic night after night, month after month.”
Of course we learned month to month in 2022-23 meant being highly inconsistent and missing a playoff spot and then this season, month to month the work ethic has continually gotten worse. Yet...here we are.

Oh and don't worry, I provided a link and everything this time, right away, in case some blokes feel I made that shit up too.

Because he's a mouthpiece for FSG and seems to write well timed articles about situations we discuss as problems and he goes out of his way to keep pushing a narrative of Sullivan is great, etc etc is the problem, and the team is not shy about putting an end to any conjecture that they feel is damaging or untrue.

Yohe and Rossi are trash like that, but they're tools used by FSG/Penguins Media. If they felt those two morons were lying sacks of shit, they would have limited their access to the team and players. It doesn't mean they don't write propaganda type of trash - it's more or less approved trash that the team feels helps them in whatever they want to spin. Not unheard of at all.
That's been the Pittsburgh hockey media problem for like, as long as I can remember. Granted, I only really started paying any attention to Pittsburgh hockey media maybe 15 years ago. But still. Everyone closest to the team has always been a spineless weasel who dives on grenades for the team regardless of how good or bad things are. I remember guys constantly talking up Shero and Bylsma after years of embarrassing playoff flameouts. I remember guys pretending players like Bennett were a lockerroom cancer and players like Despres were horribly addicted to gambling and alcohol because they got wind that those players were on their way out and they had to do damage control for the team to make the moves look good regardless of what the return was.

I'm pretty sure it's why Shirey doesn't work for DK anymore. He was too openly critical of the team for DK to be comfortable with, felt it was a threat to any access DK may have. That, and Shirey probably wanted to be paid for his work.

Anyway, this topic's run its course. Whether Sid throws a tantrum or not, Sully should've been fired four, arguably five years ago at this point. The team's just f***ing dysfunctional and incompetent as all hell.

FSG wants Sid here for $$$. They obviously want to at least appear like they're trying to compete to keep Sid happy. It doesn’t matter if you think we’ll end up pissing away the assets we gained from Jake trying to bring in a young player, that’s hopefully what Dubas is looking at. I’d personally like a young player who will actually touch NHL ice before Sid and Geno need to be wheeled out.

If we were serious about a rebuild, it wouldn’t be just Jake going. This is the start of our “re-tool” like it or not.

They Desperately need guys like that. By all accounts Pono would have made a much better team than the Pens out of camp, but he got hurt. I’m rooting for them to turn into solid NHL’ers why would any fan not what that?

If the Fin turns into Half of what Aho is this trade is a win. Simple as that
Yep I concur

Shirey for his part plays both sides for probably that reason - so he gets to keep talking to the Pens and not get the cold shoulder. He will criticize Sullivan in a barrage of tweets and then seemingly defend him in replies which contradicts his criticism.

A certain "member" here that also works at Athletic is also very speaks from both sides of the mouth type when you look back at his comments and what not, it's whatever.

We collectively have a shitty group of writers for this team, we should be used to it but we aren't because we foolishly hope one of them will say something good some day.

Are all of these guys in the NHL before Sid retires?
I think 2 of the three is a safe bet - Pono and Koivunen. Lucius might need 2 more years in the NCAA and then a season or two in WBS but it depends on how he develops.

I don’t think there’s a single poster here who is saying Sully hasn’t worn out his welcome, the big difference I see is some people think his firing makes the Pens relevant again and some people think Scotty Bowman couldn’t make this team as is a Stanley Cup contender.

No matter what you think of Dubas and return for Jake, this team is average at best. We need new coaching, we need prospects to hit, we need young blood ready to challenge for a roster spot, but we aren’t going to win a cup as is regardless of who’s the coach

Lucius could end up leaving early with the year he's having. All 3 are 20+ years of age. Ponomarev (I guess that's the version of his name he wants to go by now) has AHL experience and has a cup of tea in the NHL. Koivunen to me is probably in Camp next season fighting for the illusive 4th line LW role Sullivan has planned for him.

Oh yeah, Shirey has definitely reeled in the unfettered criticism since losing his gig and having to go indie. He for sure plays the "It's the GM/players/coach" card, alternating whenever it fits the current climate. I stopped really reading or giving a shit what he was talking about a while ago. Thought he was gonna be one of the saving graces of the Penguins media but eh. Job security above all, I guess. Can't really blame him. Man's gotta eat.

Lucius however statistically anyhow has almost identical numbers to his previous season. Now not sure the quality of the badgers this year or last but I'd like to see an uptick in production for a skilled forward.

Not when you realize how many coaches were 13Fs or perrenial healthy scratches themselves.
Very good point. No question Sully sees himself and lives vicariously through such players, like Bylsma before him.

As infuriating as watching Ruhwedel has been, he is a sub-par NHLer who carved out a 12 year NHL career as a #7 defenseman. It's kind of insane.
A friend of mine grew up playing against Ben Lovejoy in middle and HS. I asked him if Benny was any good growing up “He was the best player every time he stepped on the ice.” Ruh is infinitely better than me and most guys I got to play against (I did spend a summer playing deck hockey against Brendan Brisson and Igor Larionov’s kid)

Even goons like Reaves are infinitely better than anyone on the board is, was, or ever will be--at every facet of the game. We like to do a little goofin' though. Log on HF, talk a little shit, pretend like we know what the f*** we're talkin' about.

100%

The only reason a guy like Harkins ever gets a shot is because coaches all see themselves in him, because by and large they were all complete dogshit players too.
Low-event stick-to-itive compete level to grind those bitches down.
