we punted on the season. but didn't punt out any players... so we're planning on staying mediocre? Except below mediocre because no Jake. But above bad because 87/71/58/65..
this is why we are going to be worse next year, so we don't want to lose that pick. finish as high as we can this year and then we can do a proper tank next year.

I can't believe anyone still want this current incarnation of the team to try and be competitive. Turn the page, leave the past behind you.

Can you provide a source? Cuz I feel like if that's true, this place would be way more up in arms over the absolute absurdity of it.
You're not going to like the source but the comment itself has never been refuted.

I am trying to find the stupid f***ing article so :eek::eek::eek::eek: like you can stop bitching about it - it was something along the lines of one of the shitty Pens writers stating Sid and Letang were talking about extensions and that Sullivan was the only coach they wanted to play for, for the rest of their careers. Until I find it, here's some nuggets.

Are there ramifications to firing Sullivan? You bet. Is it important to you that Sidney Crosby finishes his career in Pittsburgh? Well, you should know he’s a big Sullivan fan. We always assume Crosby will finish his career here, but we don’t know for sure until he does. Firing Sullivan won’t make him more likely to sign a final contract in Pittsburgh. And spare me the “logo comes first” talk. Crosby, like Mario Lemieux before him, is the rare athlete who is indeed bigger than the logo.
Sullivan and Crosby have the strongest head coach/captain relationship I’ve ever witnessed.

It isn’t just on ice success that makes Sullivan such a great coach in Crosby’s eyes; Crosby made sure to point out that Sullivan is a standout bench boss in every aspect of the game.

“Whether it’s us as individuals or as a team, the things he’s brought the challenge and make us better,” Crosby said. “Preparation and all the work he does behind the scenes in making sure that we have every opportunity to be successful as players.”

@canadianguy77

Btw - After this one in particular, Sullivan should have been fired by FSG - Penguins Room: Crosby Pushes Back, but the Coach at a Loss

Also going back a bit to find the article, I found this in my bookmarks (if you pair that philosophy by MJ and the new coach in 2015 to the cup, you can see what the mix was that won in a way) - https://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/sidney-crosby-gets-fresh-start-with-penguins-new-coach-1.2785707

My favorite part of this trade deadline is watching to absolute shit fit this fanbase is throwing. Seeing all those that called for a rebuild realize just exactly what that entails. Witnessing people realize their favorite players aren't worth as much as you actually think they are. Those coming to the realization that the hockey market can be fickle and you don't always get what you want. That sad realization that losing hurts and this franchise has been blessed for sooooo long. The dark days are ahead and they aren't ready. This board, facebook, instagram, it's been a wet dream for schadenfreude.

10/10 deadline. Would watch again. I cannot wait to see more over the summer with Free Agency.

Mike just said at his presser: “I thought we had a spirited practice today” - it was a 25 minute practice after one of the most limp dick performances and losses in the last 10 years. Good lord talk about f***ing mailing it in to collect a check. Wow.

They need to be strapped down Clockwork Orange style and forced to watch this on loop….

Which would you rather see then - a bubble team or a lottery team? Because regardless of what Dubas does, this team is not going to contend anytime soon.

At this time they should be a lottery team.

Using your biggest trade asset’s value to bring back Bunting is not attempting to do that.

Like you guys realize what Dubas is advocating for right? He isn’t rebuilding. He is going to spend assets and cap regardless of the implications to compete.

Again, I couldn't really give a shit if we bob along at 11OA for the next 3 seasons, but for the love of god, find more exciting players to fill out this team instead of Harkins, Accairi, Eller, Smith and more.

Get some kids that can hit, get some scrappers or agitators, play fast if sloppy, and move away from this zero-event slopshit hockey that we've been playing since 2018-2019.

I guess my question is... does anyone see THIS team being a lottery team? Sid alone will carry this team to mediocrity. So you might as well go for it while hes here. Then let it crash when hes gone.
There is no way we can be a lottery team with the core. Ain’t gonna happen.

What bothers me is that we didn’t even TRY to adjust the coaching structure/staff and just let it all go to hell.

As it has been said many times before…
Give us a 15th ranking PP and see a completely different situation!

No, Hextall just signs Brock McGinn to a four-year deal, gives Jeff Carter a contract extension, and gives Kasperi Kapanen well over market value.

Yep. Those were great signings.

They weren’t. But they weren’t immovable like what Dubas just signed in Eller, Acciari and Graves.

But wouldn’t fit your narrative of Mike Sullivan being untouchable and Kyle Dubas getting a B- “cause it’s hard to be a GM”.

That’s the main issue as @IcedCapp was saying. They invested in the core and they’re too good for us to be a lottery team, but the team isn’t near good enough to compete for a Stanley Cup. You have two options: Ask those guys to leave and let you rebuild with what you can get (knowing full well they want to go to contenders who will give you 50 cents on the dollar if you’re lucky) OR you try to rebuild and retool on the fly which doesn’t really work until they retire. FSG, Mario, Sid pushed Hextall into option 2, he squandered a lot of other things, and now we are just going to be a blah team for a few years.

Let’s say none of what we got for Jake amounts to anything, which is a coin flip but for arguments sake, we are blah. If they do we are slightly above blah. You don’t have enough to really blow it up or shake things up to get top tier prospects because our cupboards are bare and our players are mainly just whatever on NMC’s.

You’re not getting what we hoped for getting from Jake for Rust, Smith, Petts, Jarry most likely. Maybe you will get something, but not a game breaker.

Your only hope is any assets you do acquire magically turn into Jake and Letang 2.0 which isn’t likely

Completely agree with the PP. This team underachieved to be sure. They have nobody to blame but themselves but an average PP and they're in contention. Up until.. this deadline with Dubas.. I was fairly confident they would make a change at coaching after the season. They still may, but idk what to think at this point. I see no plan to be good, no plan to be bad.

I could not care any less about using a multi-billion dollar corporate conglomerate's money.

As far as the assets, depends on what assets and for who. Personally, I don't see how the assets they got at the deadline changes anything nor do I see what they could have done differently that would have drastically altered anything either.

The biggest change they can make and should have already made is firing Sullivan.

Agreed

We haven’t had any real identity in years.

Or been fun to watch either.

I can live with selling on Jake and the return we got. I can't live with not selling Smith, Eller and Ned. Especially Ned, since he's on an expiring contract. The other two, maybe the only way to move them was with retention, and we didn't want to carry that next season. Ned though?

Write off next season. Alternate Sid/Geno and Letang/Karlsson to rest them and maybe preserve some gas in the tank for 25-26. This will get worse before it gets better.

Koivunen is the guy that likely determines whether this is a successful trade for the Pens. Not to say the other components can't be decent pieces. But he apparently has the best upside
Yes obsolutely! With the Russian Ponomarev I'm thinking the Pens will be going back to Russia to draft some kids outta there to compliment and help him. Having 2-3 Europeans connected by kinship helps with the culture shock most go through when they come to this side of the Big Pond! But yes I like Koivunen's upside for the Pens I'm wishing he turns out to be another S Aho 2.0

Yeah, I appreciate the effort in looking stuff up, but there's no direct quote in there, just a bunch of insinuation over typical cliche robotspeak bullshit by Sid who has never had anything but stellar things to say about his teammates/coaches, and the source is Yohe--who I'm pretty sure would beg Sullivan to bang his own wife if he got the chance.

Anyway, pretty much exactly how I felt before. Sid's not outright demanding Sullivan be the coach of this team. He's just doing his usual shtick of being a squeaky clean, consummate professional and only speaking positively when asked about anyone he's played or worked with. I'd wager that if you asked him what kind of effect his peewee coach had on him, he'd go on and on about how he instilled this determination to be the best and helped build a foundation of fundamentals and all that bullshit. That's just who Sid is, I don't take a single word he says at face value, and nobody should.

The issue is that this team's too chickenshit to even risk Sid cracking a frown that they hear his quotes and think "Well now we definitely can't fire Sully because Sid said a nice thing, and we can't ever upset Sidney Crosby--perish the thought." Just an organization that carried itself well for about 15 years before completely collapsing into a pile of gelatinous, cowardly slop and unlikable decision makers; from ownership (past and present), to the FO from 2017 through now, to the coach.

It’s pretty clear through a quick survey of the locker room that Sullivan is the only man this team wants to play for. Kris Letang even said it last year. The Big Three never wants another head coach.

The Big Three never wants another head coach. The Big Three never wants another head coach. The Big Three never wants another head coach. The Big Three never wants another head coach. The Big Three never wants another head coach. The Big Three never wants another head coach. The Big Three never wants another head coach. The Big Three never wants another head coach. The Big Three never wants another head coach. The Big Three never wants another head coach.

There, clear enough. @canadianguy77 @Big Friggin Dummy
