We should be so lucky

I like Bunting, but he is not going to make us a contender, and you can get players like him in FA for the same amount of money. We could have gotten him for nothing 8 months back. So how much value does he have? I would argue probably nothing, a 6th like Zucker.

My point is Dubas just traded the best player at the deadline for very little actual value. We needed a 23 year old right shot D man with top 4 upside, a young forward who projected to the top 6 in a year or two. We're likely not competing for anything next year, but if the right moves are made now, we could be in 2 years if Yager progresses and whoever we got this year does as well.

The three guys we got sound like bottom six players as a ceiling. You can get those anywhere for cheap, look at Eller, Acciari, Nieto, etc.
Based on teams in on Jake who do you wish we had gotten in return?

I mean, a big part of next year is Sullivan. He just flat out needs to be gone if this team has any chance of turning it around. That said, I think if they can move Acciari or Nieto and Smith, I think we can see something like:

Raks-Sid-Rust
Bunting-Malkin-Puustinen
XXXX-XXXX-XXXX
XXXX-Eller-XXXX
Nieto (ideally waived or traded)

In which you have: DOC, Bemstrom, Poulin, Yager, Pono, and Koivunen all battling for spot. You can really mix and match until you find what you want. I wouldn't balk at sending Bemstrom+Poulin out to a cash strapped team and getting a solid third liner back either.
Not sure if Yager or Koivunen will be ready.
Smith should be dealt for cap space to bring in some solid Dmen.

Rakell-Crosby-Rust
Bunting-Malkin-Puustinen
O'Connor-Ponomarev-Bemstrom
Poulin-Eller-Acciari
Nieto Gruden Puljujarvi

I can live with selling on Jake and the return we got. I can't live with not selling Smith, Eller and Ned. Especially Ned, since he's on an expiring contract. The other two, maybe the only way to move them was with retention, and we didn't want to carry that next season. Ned though?

Write off next season. Alternate Sid/Geno and Letang/Karlsson to rest them and maybe preserve some gas in the tank for 25-26. This will get worse before it gets better.

I have to agree I expected 2 or 3 of Eller Smith & Ned to be traded. I am surprised

No it's not.
You get a guaranteed NHL player, young, big body, already has a near 20 goal season... versus 4 scratch off tickets.

If their goal is to be competitive next year (which is what they keep harping on) then the latter does nothing for that. Kakko would have.

And if Dubas really wanted his boy Bunting he could have got him probably cheap in the offseason.

Someone explain to me why the core would want to be part of this pretend to compete soft rebuild with no real chance to get far in the playoffs, if they make them at all.

I get why they are peddling this to the fans to sell tickets and to maintain interest.

But the core who could compete elsewhere?

Why would they buy into this?

Crosby finds some historic meaning in simultaneously being one of the best players of all time and playing his entire career with one franchise - perhaps because he used to live with one of the only other people on earth who fits the description.

Malkin was ready to leave. Sid talked both sides into staying. Letang is a moron as has been previously established on numerous occasions.

Further, they are 3 hall of fame players, hall of fame players are notorious for their unwavering belief in themselves.

What's with this scratch off ticket narrative? Did you even look up these prospects after the trade? Maybe if you took a little time in doing so you might feel better about it. Initially I was half dead. But even if ONE of these picks or prospects pan out, it was worth it. And there's a decent chance that two will. At lease educate yourself now that you know the components in the deal. Nothing is guaranteed, but I definitely am more optimistic when researching these guys. Koivunen in particular. Kakko, hard pass!

Makes me wonder what Jake's plan is. Are we trying to win as much as possible out of spite so we don't want to dump the whole team? Or are we hanging on to guys so that we don't get completely caved next year and hope that a couple of the guys we traded for make an impact? Are we expecting Jake back?

It's an interesting idea to just have as many good tickets as possible rather than having one sure thing too, as well as not overrating a low 1st round pick and instead grabbing multiple seconds/former seconds. Seems a bit moneyball. Might not pay off but it is an interesting gamble.

I admire it. But all can produce and win another Cup.

Just not here.

I find it hard to believe that competitive players would choose to ride out the end of their careers like this when they could legitimately add another Cup if they were elsewhere.

It's tough to say what to do with the roster right now, especially right now because as you know very well - it really depends on who the coach is next season and Sullivan remaining is just stupid really.

I mean as of right now we still have Smith, Acciari, Nieto, Hinostroza, etc. Then you wonder what the idea is with O'Connor, still a Winger or back to C? Eller as the 4c to me is the logical choice for having the right book end from L1-L4, but deployment is such a massive problem. Having a scorer on the 4th line to me is fine as well if you utilize them the way Sprong has been with Seattle and Detroit, where you're essentially taking advantage of mismatches and letting a shooter feast on 3rd pairings and 3rd-4th lines.

That'll learn'em with that stick-to-itiveness and playing the right way.

If Harkins is out for a while, it could happen.

Seems like they place a lot on their friendship and their families and less on chasing a 4th cup. It's admirable in a way, even if it's a sign that their desire isn't the same as it used to be.
