Friedman said here that Vancouver has dropped out on Guentzel because they feel they can't compete with the offers of other teams.

I don't know if this is speculation from Staple, but if Perreault and a 1st is on the table from the Rangers, I have no clue how you can't take that immediately.
I have to assume the teams that are "out" have a "bid" in to Dubas with a "here's what we can do, call us if things change" so who knows.

I also have to imagine Dubas sets the price with a team like the Rangers and it's absolutely up there with Othmann or Perreault, so the NYR's discussions are centered around two things: 1. To Dubas - what else can we do? 2. Internally - okay, do we want to give that price if THAT is the final price?"

A little bonkers to me that Carolina hasn't pulled the trigger. They get so close but they obviously CLEARLY need that extra high-end push that Jake gives them. And they are balking because...of a couple prospects? JFC.

I think they probably move Guentzel to RW.

I don't quite agree with your thought on the Rangers, though. I think the East is very wide open this year with Tampa having a down year and the Bruins being much weaker (at least on paper). Guentzel is a prolific goal scorer in the playoffs, I think you figure out how to make adding him work if you can add him.

That's also why I think there's a bidding war between Carolina and NYR right now. They know that if they don't get him, they'll very likely have to play against him in the playoffs.
Yeah, the Rangers would kick Kakko down the lineup and put Guentzel on right wing.

Beauvillier blows and he went for a 5th? Lol

Dubas better get a 3rd for Chud Turdwedel.

What a bunch of jerks.

Yohe said Van isn’t willing to deal Lekkerimaki or Wallander in which case I’d tell them they’re out unless they do.

If NYR are willing to deal one of those 2 prospects Carolina has to be willing to deal Nishkin

This is a collossal if, but if the Rangers are willing to include Perreault in the deal, I think you're right that Nikishin is the only thing that can beat that. I also think there is borderline no chance that the Rangers include Perreault.

Othmann and a 1st is totally believable and lines up well with what I'm expecting. Perreault? That's even worse than Vancouver trading Lekkerimaki, the Rangers would be insane to do that.

That is the rub.

I think that they know that the window to be actual contenders has closed absent a lottery ticket type playoff run next year where the players achieve above their talent level. The core only gets older each year and the cupboard is bare in the minors where you can get cheap very skilled talent to put around that core.

But the core seems to want to end their careers here, and I can't say that we do not owe that to them. The fans would enjoy that ride off into the sunset as well.

So Dubas is caught in this head-heart fight. Logically he knows that the best thing might be to jump start a rebuild. His job could even be imperiled if the rebuild is delayed as it could add years to a rebuild.

But he has enormous pressure to go, if not the other way, to pretend as if they will rejigger the lineup a bit in the off-season and go back to cup favorites.

So he has pressure coming at him both ways.
i don’t disagree with anything you said, but that’s kind of my point. People are crapping on Dubas for not acting like a normal GM or whatever, but this isn’t a normal situation.

Honestly, people shouldn’t give a shit what happens. If you think we have no shot of winning regardless, and the Pens are committed to the big-3, then by definition, literally nothing that happens over the next 2 days matters.

I bet we won't do anything today, beat the Caps somehow and Sully will bully Dubas into not selling anyone because "we are still in the race".

I late 1st does nothing for us. With Jake, it's all about the quality prospect(s).

Othmann or Perreault are both guys that could be on the NHL roster next year.
That's assuming they'll give either of them.

More than likely, they'll talk it down to some AHL tweener who will never amount to shit under Sullivan (most players don't amount to shit under Sullivan).

Othmann, Jones and a 2024 1st for Guentzel seems to hit all of the things Dubas is looking for. A young NHLer, a top level prospect and a 1st seems to be exactly what he's shooting for.

I'm not entirely sure what to think of Jones, though. I remember he was ultra hyped up a few years ago, but it seems like he's just been kinda middling since. I think he's stuck in a numbers game in NY, though.

Yes it would; it could signal a huge shift from the status quo, which by reading these boards, most want.

Guentzel has never consistently played RW. This gives me the "Oh, we'll just have Iginla move to LW" vibes.

You need clearly defined roles and players that fit those roles more than just talent. Adding more and more talent and figuring it out on the fly in a relatively short amount of time rarely works out.

But hey, if the Pens benefit from it...go for it, Rangers.

Unfortunately for everyone here, this board doesn’t run the team.

This is what I’m asking you to do, and everyone keeps failing: attempt to view the situation from outside of your own myopic view. No one cares what you want or think. Stop assuming your thoughts and opinions are valid for this situation.

The penguins view on the big 3 has been made clear. Approach the situation from that standpoint. Or don’t. But if you choose to continue to throw temper tantrums because they’re not doing what you want, when they’ve made it clear that they’re not going to do what you want, 1) you’re a toddler 2) it’s your fault.

Honest question: for the people talking down the return and saying "Dubas is going to screw this up, they're going to get nothing for him": why are you even here? You don't even sound like Penguins fans

If following this team makes you ultra jaded and sad, why continue to follow them?

If that's on the table I have to think the deal is already done.
