More of what we already know, but it seems like it's a battle between the Hurricanes and Rangers at this point.

Both have young guys I would be high on. Both have the ability to land him. Both can get it done immediately if they are willing.

Better yet, if either miss, Dubas can offer the 2nd place team Smith at a good price.

This is what I’m hoping is happening. He’s working out the max deal for Jake but lining up Smith+ as a consolation prize that includes some of what is being offered for Jake.

This board does it about everybody. It gets tiring seeing “who cares what X says? He knows nothing!” every time a tweet is posted. What the f*** would we have to talk about if we can’t post things the media say because they “know nothing”?

Too many quote it as gospel when clearly just click bait trash.

Speaking of Smith, Seravalli said that there are more teams in on Smith than Guentzel right now and the Penguins could get a strong return (as in like a 2nd+) if they retain money on him.
What’s our cap at the moment? If we retain on Smith and Jake that adds value, we can always make other cap dump moves

The latter is what makes him valuable. He's finally over-performing (after having under-performed) to contract which means he's valuable in a trade for "better" coming back. Bend over some contender like we got bent for years.

We can still ice an exciting team -and unlike you I think we COULD compete - but it would take serious work and I know Petts is a guy you'd love to have - but he would bring back more than he contributes at this point. Beyond this contract he's going to cost too much.
Yeah I'd move Pettersson for a young LHD to a team in win now mode vs the Pens pretending they're in win now mode with a lose all the time coach.

Pettersson is going to be a waste to sign with the state of the team and he's a bloke that is at his highest value at the moment.

Ideal: Jake to Carolina for Nikishin/Morrow + Nadeau. Petts to Edmonton for a 1st+. Smith to Vegas for a 2nd.

Reality: Jake to Carolina for whatever. Smith to somebody for like a 4th. Pens pick up some loser AHL fodder that Sullivan shoehorns into the lineup nightly. People continue to think this team can still right the ship for another three years.

More reality: Jake isn't moved. They trade Ned. Dubas makes some comment about how "he believes in Mike Sullivan and this group and he wasn't going to move players just to move them".

Dubas says he is trying to get younger and signs a bunch of old guys this summer and we run it back.

I don't care if they do trade Petts, but I don't think they will.

They're saying they are retooling, not rebuilding. Retooling teams don't trade their top LD who's under contract for another year at a very good cap hit.

That is absolutely right in line with current prices. I would gladly take a 2nd + 4th. I think that's what he's worth, especially with the extra year.

I wonder if Dubas has shifted anything thinking on the return for him as he said he was looking for a player-for-player swap.

I think we can forget about Nikishin just like we can forget about Lekkerimaki.

Nadeau would be my preference. How great the 2nd piece would be, who knows. I would take Nadeau+B prospect+1st. OR I would be willing to do Nadeau+Morrow straight up and I'd be more than willing to retain the 50%.

Jake to Carolina would be so nice because Carolina would be an easy team to root for come playoffs. Just like Vancouver honesty with half the team being former Penguins.

I'm not ready to say we can't make playoffs again - but the entire roster construction and coaching staff has to be torn down to the studs.

You need to look at this team in this way:
1G locked up
70 point Sid / 1/2C tweener locked up and willing to commit for less money
70 point EK 1RD locked up

That's it. That's the team.

From there if you're talking Geno as a L2/L3 winger at 6M it's not so bad. Letang as a 6M 2RD not so bad....

That's 36M (likely less with Sid re-signed) out of 87-90M with
1G, 2C, 2W, 1RD, 2RD

Potentially 54M to spend on the next 1C (likely drafted) and the rest of the holes. All you're asking is a new system/coach and to spend less carelessly. I refuse to believe that those guys still putting up points on discounted contracts somehow prohibits us from competing. The lack of young talent is doing that. So if we're saying we have to bottom out to get there...I disagree. Though, it'll take better drafting, trading, and big FA offers (Marner may be available as soon as this Summer tbh).

That's all talk for another day. But yeah - sell every single player on this damn roster because they bring nothing to the team going forward.

The fact that nothing has happened yet is giving me these vibes as well

Maybe you retain 50% on Pettersson to the Oilers for Phillip Brobeans and their 2nd.
Hard pass. I think you could do much better, especially at the TDL. Pettersson 1000% returns a 1st+

Beauvilluer to Nashville for a 5th.

Small deals being completed like that make me worry about timelines with guys like Smith, Eller, Acciari. I don't want to run into "We would have been interested yesterday, but we did something else"

The thought of dumb dick GMs at the peak stupid season getting in a bidding war for Reilly f***ing Smith is both amazing and hilarious to me.

Who's playing RW or on L3 among Panarin, Kreider, and Guentzel?

Rangers being so aggressive here doesn't make sense to me.

I think they probably move Guentzel to RW.

I don't quite agree with your thought on the Rangers, though. I think the East is very wide open this year with Tampa having a down year and the Bruins being much weaker (at least on paper). Guentzel is a prolific goal scorer in the playoffs, I think you figure out how to make adding him work if you can add him.

That's also why I think there's a bidding war between Carolina and NYR right now. They know that if they don't get him, they'll very likely have to play against him in the playoffs.
