I meant to ask the board this:

I started watching about only 1 out of every 4 games starting just before Thanksgiving - and never really paid much attention to the crowds. Was Columbus an off-night or is that the new norm at PPG? I would have thought Yinzers loved Sully. My family up there literally still text me things like "Great win! Still in it!"....so yeah, are the faithful finally becoming self aware?

Indifference has 100% set in among the fanbase. That includes falling ticket prices and actual attendance.

Obviously, if the Rangers are after Guentzel, it would be to play RW. That is their biggest need. Their biggest flaw. Lafreniere is already playing RW by default, but at least he broke out this season as a right-winger. Wheeler is injured and was doing nothing before going down. Kakko is not the top-six RW they envisioned when they drafted him. At least not yet.

I don't want to beat the proverbial dead horse here, but this is why I am 100% certain that the Rangers would be all in on Bryan Rust IF WE MADE HIM AVAILABLE, which we refuse to do. You could argue that the Rangers would pay at least as much for Rust as they would for Jake. Needs matter. Roster construction matters. Ask Vancouver (Lindholm).

Over the past two seasons, you're probably right.

Continued (edit) -> but he's also way, way more available in a third line role than Jake. Jake would be eaten alive against bottom 6ers.

I just don't see the need unless they can get him cheap. Same argument for all the teams involved outside of Carolina and Vancouver. And Vancouver already made a big move this deadline.

No they wouldn't, and it doesn't matter if Rust wouldn't waive his NMC to go there.

Rust has extremely little value with his contract.

Disagree. His reputation alone is worth a second-round pick. Throw in his championship pedigree and there is a decent prospect to go along with it.

DK basically saying in his am podcast that Dubas is not going to trade Jake unless it’s a franchise changing haul lol…if he wanted one, then he should have traded him this summer…so I guess we’re just going to let him possibly walk this summer and get nothing for him….that’s even worse than trading him for a first and a good prospect…that better not be Dubas’ thinking

No argument against Carolina. They literally have the track record, the statistics to back up a desperate need of top-6 scoring, AND several upcoming expiring deals entering the playoffs. Let alone the age of Burns...it's now or reset for them.

I don't particularly like them - so to be honest I don't care if they land Jake. Be stingy, lose. I'm on the Florida wagon in the East this year and Colorado out West.

His NMC kills any sort of value he has. The Penguins can't just send him to the highest bidder. Rust picks wherever he'd go and any team acquiring him would know that.

I could see a 2nd rounder, but it would be a cap dump and a 2nd rounder as like a best case scenario for the return. And even then, I'm not sure he'd get that. Tarasenko was just traded for only a 3rd and 4th because he only allowed a trade to Florida.

Regardless of what happens with Jake, I hope we start seeing other Pens pieces moving out today. Smith, Ned, Eller all should be gonners at least.
I think those pieces will move tomorrow, unless they happen in the next couple of hours and the Pens can make a recall or two.

Good. Guentzel is worth more to this franchise right now than what is being offered. Dubas wanted a deal done yesterday, according to reports. So, now that teams have drawn a line, it is time to get back to trying to re-sign Jake and work on moving out the pieces you have to move out.

Agreed. He's invaluable to the three year window the Penguins have of giving up shorthanded goals, blowing third period leads, and suffering crushing defeat after crushing defeat outside the playoff picture.

I'm about 99% sure at this point that nobody's willing to give up a first for him now.

And again, that isn't a defense of Dubas. If he's so poorly regarded by other GMs that they won't deal with him unless they're fleecing him, that's a problem.

You might be right. But Friedman is fairly reliable as a source, and if he says multiple teams talked to Dubas about Rust, I believe him. If Detroit and NYR want him, Rust would probably at least think about it, no?

Also, no matter how many Stanley Cup wins a Russian player will earn, his reputation will never be as sterling as a player like Rust. You know it, I know it. It is the sad state of the old boys network that is the National Hockey League.

Bottom line, Rust has more value than you think imho. But we will never know for sure and that is the real crime here.

Jake was miffed the Pens didn’t make him a priority to re-sign this summer and apparently is set to test the market July 1..unlikely he re-signs…need to trade him…if he really wants to come back, they can discuss it in the summer

But again, that means nothing if Rust won't be willing to waive his NMC to go there. It's not about interest in Rust, it's about Rust's NMC.

Y’all take too much stock in what a bunch of nobodies are saying.

I find it funny that people always shit on DK as not being legit, until he says something that they agree with

Okay, but if they are committed to the big 3 until they retire, what do you suggest?
"Hey, we gave it a shot and it didn't work out. You're welcome to retire as Penguins, or we can try to find landing spots for you to chase another Cup. We're gonna shift to start focusing on the next chapter."

Says who? All the reports are that both sides wanted to see how the season played out before committing long-term to a plan.

 You really think this team still has a shot at competing, huh?

This is the most excitement we've had in two seasons with regard to the Pens.

I didn't even post for a month and haven't watched even a quarter of the games since Christmas. But it's selling season, finally...and one step at a time - but hopefully the coaching staff isn't far behind this loser ass roster.

I doubt Jake is as pissed off with the team as Geno was, and yet we re-signed him.

I'm thinking here....
If Guentzel is worried about new gloves, and crap like that, it looks like he would rather NOT be traded.

It's very possible that Dubas has the best deal possible on the table (whatever that is), and is using that as leverage to get Jake to resign. This only makes sense if the deal on the table is underwhelming.

Basically...
"Hey we have a deal to trade you to Team X. Honestly, we would prefer to just keep you, but we don't want to lose you to FA for nothing. You can either resign before Friday, or we trade you."

Maybe I'm giving Dubas too much credit, but that's how I would play it :D.

BTW our option of keeping Jake as a rental went out the door with our playoff hopes and team success this season.
