I came here to post exactly this. The Penguins only really have table scraps to offer in a trade. Teams don't give up can't miss young superstars for table scraps, but you can probably get Laine for Smith straight up. If he stays healthy you're looking and an elite goal scorer in the prime of his career.Laine is the kind of chance we should be taking. Still only 26, should cost minimal assets, and only 2 years left if he flames out.
This is the roster building equivalent of pulling the goalie. The chance to win offsets the downside of losing by worse score. It doesn't matter if the Penguins miss the playoffs by 2 point or 20 points. Sure bad Laine pushes you closer to missing by 20, buy good Laine pushes you in to competing for a playoff series win.
