Laine is the kind of chance we should be taking. Still only 26, should cost minimal assets, and only 2 years left if he flames out.
I came here to post exactly this. The Penguins only really have table scraps to offer in a trade. Teams don't give up can't miss young superstars for table scraps, but you can probably get Laine for Smith straight up. If he stays healthy you're looking and an elite goal scorer in the prime of his career.

This is the roster building equivalent of pulling the goalie. The chance to win offsets the downside of losing by worse score. It doesn't matter if the Penguins miss the playoffs by 2 point or 20 points. Sure bad Laine pushes you closer to missing by 20, buy good Laine pushes you in to competing for a playoff series win.

If the locker room has essentially mutinied against a coach then it’s the captains’ job to go to the GM and say something. It’s obvious that isn’t the case here.

I don’t see why anyone would think Sid has any responsibility to tell the GM and owners that a change is needed. It’s not his fault they’re all incompetent.
It's the GMs job to not be dumb enough to miss the obvious.

Again, if you can snag Laine for some valueless asset like Rakell and get outta Rakell's term, go for it. This team doesn't have the luxury of chasing options without flaws. Agree there.

But like, Mike Sullivan coaching Laine is basically the hockey version of throwing him into an oubliette. I have zero confidence it'd work out, either in terms of Laine hitting his potential or regaining a bit of value to eventually be flipped shortly down the road when this team's tearing shit down.

Would be funny to see Laine drive Sullivan insane though.

Can't. Got a Penguins tattoo.

Maybe he’ll try and convince people his Penguins tattoo is a Blackhawks one

Love the peeps on this board that think divisional foes are going to trade with us at the start of a new season. Keep dreaming....

Columbus is nowhere close to the playoffs and aren't going to be next year. Why would they care?

Also trading for Laine, even at 50%, has a chance of making a team weaker, not stronger. He was just in the player assistant program and his love for hockey is at a low point.

Ah, the thought of Laine on the third line with Ellers for 12 minutes a night. But why is he struggling so much?

Sid still wants nobodies on his line - and won't come off of Rust/DOC for anything next year (maybe if he's slumping by Christmas?) and Geno/Laine has the potential to be downright horrendous.

Unless you're bringing in that 2C that seems to be on nobodies mind but ours, I don't see how Laine makes sense here.

You have to at least take a look at Laine. That's the exact kind of reclamation project that we should be going for (if it makes sense).

I’d think he would help with the power play. Guy still has a rocket of a shot and can score from 30 feet out. That’s pretty much all he brings to the table though. But we’d finally have a guy who can score from the perimeter again so that would be nice.

So, Laine has exactly what this power play needs. I keep thinking about how good Stamkos would look with us. Well, Laine is pretty much in the same boat. The difference is Stamkos is reliable and money. Laine is a total question mark at this point.

That said, I doubt we can get Laine for either Smith or Rakell. Somebody (anybody) will be able to beat that offer. And future assets should be out of the question.

I think the ONLY chance Dubas has of landing Laine is if we swap goaltenders (Jarry for Elvis). But I am not sure whether Waddell wants to trade Merzlikins or not. Plus, Laine and Merzlikins is (at least) one too many reclamation projects.

I still want Stamkos. As long as TB has only 5+ million of cap space, we have a shot. Is it a pipe dream? Perhaps. But when you look at what this power play needs, and who is available, he checks every box (except the age box, I suppose).

Laine is interesting b/c if the Pens can pick him up it means he’s cheap-ish. Would help PP at least.

I’d really like Necas or Ehlers though.

If you could make a Ehlers for Rakell swap, I think that makes sense for both sides. If you could snag Laine somehow on top that, even better. Presumably Smith+

Poulin-Eller-Acciari

PP would likely be better...

Ehlers isn't used on the top PP in Winnipeg regularly and his game is mostly rush based.

I like the idea of adding him though. I just feel like we get outbid.

Honestly have a feeling Ehlers is going to NYI for one of their defenseman.

I don't know why Winnipeg is even remotely considering an Ehlers for Rakell swap.

Rakell for Laine is actually semi realistic, but Laine's deal is so ugly that I'd be pretty uncomfortable doing that. Laine is a legitimately bad player outside of his shot, he's an even more extreme version of James Neal. Do we really want that guy playing with a near 40 year old Malkin? Not only that, but Laine is made of glass and probably will miss a big chunk of games anyway.

Crosby is sure as hell not going to want to play with Laine, either. That will last about 3 shifts before Crosby is holding Sullivan at gunpoint to get Laine off of his line

He has plenty of speed which is why I put him with Malkin. But I tend to agree, I think Ehlers to NYI for Pulock is practically inevitable. I think Pulock is more valuable, especially with the longer term deal, so there's gonna be a pick or prospect going with him but it's a straight-forward hockey trade for both teams that addresses needs.

1yr vs 4yrs would be my general comment. If Winnipeg is worried about attracting top 6 RWs without overpaying, swapping Ehlers for Rakell isn't the worst idea.

I'd rather Laine be a waste for 2yr than Rakell be a waste for another 4yr. Neither is gonna move the needle, and with Laine (who I think is cooked, and would absolutely not do better under Sullivan) being gone right around the time Sid's likely to retire seems to line up well. Team can start taking on bad contracts for picks/prospects sooner.
