TJ is currently the 12th highest-paid goalie, which everyone loves to talk about. He's going to drop to ~20th in the next year or so if not further with how much eh cap is going up.

Saros in 2025
Demko in 2026
Ullmark in 2025
Hill in 2025?
Husso in 2025?
Knight in 2026?
Sorokin in 2024
Ottinger in 2025
Gustavsson in 2026?
Swayman in 2024
Georgiev in 2025?
Skinner in 2026
Ingram in 2026?

Not all 13 will get more than TJ but most will so his cap hit isn't a problem.

Again, if they score at all on the PP, no one cares about TJ's stats.

Saw on tsn that Ottawa is looking to get rid of Mathieu Joseph, P.Os brother. He makes a little under 3 million and is signed for two more seasons. I always thought he stood out when he played against the pens and brought a little nastiness.

Conversely; their inability to score on the power play doesn't hurt as much if their starter doesn't crater for the final 3 months of the season annually.

Both are big problems. Neither will get solved. Experience Penguins Hockey™.
My point is that TJ isn't making "make up for a horrendous PP" money. He's making "be a top 15-20 goalie in the league" money.

Yeah, I'd do Reilly Smith for him. Shaves 2 mil.

TJ is making 4 more million than Ned who put up a similar season last year.

Suitable Jarry replacement?

Got it right here:

The term doesn't matter much to me w/ the cap going up and his age. I'm all for moving him as long as we have a suitable replacement. As of now, no one's given a suitable replacement IMO.
I do think he's movable. I don't think the team sees him as a legitimate problem, let alone wants to move him though. Not particularly worried about a "suitable" replacement tbh. This team's been unable to maintain a WC spot for a couple years, they're not contending again while Sid's still playing. Hell, they might not make the playoffs again at all for the next decade. /shrug

Much like Sullivan, with Jarry, you get rid of a guy for not doing his job.

Smith for Joseph?

Mathieu Joseph would be a decent pickup for us, honestly. He was practically a cap dump to start the year, but with an elevated role, he did quite well, and most fans were pretty happy with him. Plays that rougher style. If they really wanted to run DOC with Sid, MJ would be a good LW for the 3rd line. I don't think he's the guy you get to go on Sid's LW though.

I would suggest that he is a similar player to Dakota Joshua, so if people want him, they can trade for his counterpart.

If you pick up Joshua or Joseph, though, I think that means you need to move Rakell in a major move for a big-time winger. Just pretend for the sake of conversation that you could do Rakell, Poulin, and 1st for Marner.

Or do that anyway and just sign Jakey-boy.

From Yohe’s article today, talks about Smith, Rakell and Jarry and Graves as 4 guys they’d like to move on from…so sorrry for the Jarry defenders lol

Biggest thing Yohe said is that the team DID NOT want to give Jarry a 5 year deal, but the remaining goalie market was so poor they felt that was the best short-term option. Jarry had the leverage. That said, the team seems to have zero faith in his ability to win big games. Losing the net down the stretch and failing to give Jarry a start in the final meaningless game was very telling. There are teams looking for goaltending. If someone knocks, Penguins will listen.

Ned had worse stats in fewer games and is going to be getting a raise this summer.

I'm sure a Korposolo/Ned tandem is going to solve all our problems next year though.

Ned had a .902 SV% in 38 games. Jarry had a .903 SV% in 51.

Amazing work by the 5 million dollar goalie who has had one good year in a regular season in his career where he played less games than Ned did this year!

Kyle Dubas. Has a plan.

I mean, we heard the same shlock around here as soon as it was made official. "What do you expect? Best option available." etc etc

Jarry's a f***ing dweeb. As much as I keep bringing up Sullivan when talking about him, it's not about "remove the factor, fix the problem(s)." It's about "f*** this loser, he's annoying and sucks, I don't care if the team wins/loses marginally more." The era's dead anyway.

Yea but it's Yohe. He could say nothing and it would have the same value.

If only Jarry got to pick the players on this team in front of him, he'd be better. Just give him another year.

Can we trade Graves back to New Jersey for Palat?

Yeah, I mean, this team's pretty casual in their own zone and around the net for sure. But like, come up with a big save every now and then?

The "guys in front of him don't do him any favors" stuff only holds water for so long. If the goalie needs perfect conditions to do well, then, I dunno. Wrong goalie for the team, cuz this team's aggressively mediocre in pretty much all facets, not the least of which is defensive play (from the blueliners as well as forwards).

No. Jarry was a good goalie for one month of the year. An above average goalie in two months and then way below average in the rest of the year. He put up a .893 SV% in October and a .870 SV% in March.

Jarry f***ing blows and is inconsistent as hell.

If he was a good goalie he wouldn't have had to come back to PIT with his tail between his legs after UFA.

And if he was viewed as you are talking about we would somehow be able to get out of the contract fro minimal value.

Lankinen, Kahkonen, and Brossiot are goaltenders I would easily rather pay 2 mil with Ned at 3 mil then over Jarry.

The myth of Tristan Jarry is honestly the most bizarre thing I've seen from this franchise's fanbase and media over the last few years.

It truly is shocking how bad Jarry falters around the all-star break. Like, at first you think it's a bit of an exaggerated meme, but then you look at the numbers and it's actually true how accurate it is.

Reilly Smith just feels like he’s as good as gone to me. As for Ryan Graves I’m skeptical if he can pull a Paul Martin or Matt Niskanen and turn it around after his first year… maybe if they can hire a decent assistant coach who can work with him a little better than Reirden.

Just for laughs I looked at the buyout for Graves and it wasn’t pretty basically until 2030 he’s gonna cost almost 4 million but after that he’s about 750,000 but at that point theres no point because the core will be likely gone by then.

One thing is not quite like the other.

I hate the whole "well who would have done better" argument. Well gee Ned just did for one. How many people had that on their bingo card? Its almost like you don't quite know unless you give a guy a chance. Or you know.. keep doing the same thing over and over and end up defending a guy for some reason.

So yea lets just ride out the Jars contract another 4 years and win jack ****.

I'm honestly not that surprised they want to move on from Rakell. He was a Hextall acquisition and signing that seemingly doesn't fit all that well with Malkin and won't be playing with Crosby. He was terrific for the Penguins in 2022-2023 and isn't really "overpaid" for what he brings, but they're better off finding a better fit with Malkin than just shoehorning Rakell there.

I think Jarry ends up getting moved this off-season. There are too many teams with shitty goalie situations that I really struggle to see no one wanting to trade for Jarry. Ottawa sticks out as a major example of a team who may want him.
