It's because Pittsburgh isn't an attractive market.
Source?

Hossa and Iggy both walked in UFA. Wouldn't that be a demonstration of exaclty what we are saying?

They both left for bigger markets in Detroit and Boston.
Those were long ago, and Iggy wasn't utilized correctly. I don't think the same applies now. Besides, the team spends a ton of time in Cranberry, which is a very nice family community, lower taxes, and strip malls for the wives. Very conveniently located.

I mean, it's all relative. I would suggest that with the likes of Sid, Geno, Letang, Fluery, Murray, Jake, etc and the number of good trades we've made, there hasn't always been a pressing need to go out and get the big fish in free agency.

You can go on CapFriendly and search the GM and see signings and filter out the Pens.

Shero big fish:
Martin and Zbynek in July 2010.

Rutherford big fish:
Christian Ehrhoff in 2014

Hextall:
McGinn and Rutta

Dubas:
Graves
Eller
Acciari

The VAST majority of big names this club has on the roster and resigned are either trades or draftees.

The bolded is likely true for any reasonably well run franchise though.

I just don't think it's a coincidence that none of the big names we've chased have panned out. And that would include Hossa/Iginla that left after being deadline acquisitions along with the likes of Suter/Parise/etc.

Evidential.

Name a single high profile UFA that signed here.

Kyle Dubas is our big swing.
Pretty hard to do when we were at cap limits and had two generational talents. Wasn't much money left for big names. But plenty of guys who came here in trades like Billy G, Kunitz, Dupuis, Gary Roberts, hell we couldn't get them to leave. EK wanted to come here. So, how do you explain that bub?

That's exactly what I said happens. Once a player is acquried here we've done a good job of selling them on the franchise, but it's been a rarity that an elite player chooses us in UFA.

Not to mention the number of former players who still live hear after their career ends. Even Jeff Carter is sticking around, instead of going back to LA.

I feel like people just argue with me to argue with me.

Go read. This is exactly what I was saying happens.

It's similar to St Louis. We get players and they realize the value of the franchise and area, but we do not have success swindling big fish in UFA.

That's why I liked getting Kyle Dubas regardless of how I felt about him. We finally got a big fish.

Probably for the best though. How many FA "big fish" have truly panned out? Panarin seems like the best one. Hossa next. Then...?

We're probably better off though. When you have Sid and Geno taking up the bulk of the cap, you just don't have the money for other big names.

Hamhuis or Parise would've been a godsend for this team.
I remember Plan A being Hamhuis and Volchenkov being Plan A and Martin and Michalek being Plan B. Oof. Martin turned out for us though after his first year.

And yeah, Parise was exactly what they needed to pair with Sid. I do remember the buzz being that he was after BOTH Parise and Suter. Both would have been a godsend to the team. You just have to wonder if they would have suffered the same fate.

Big difference between having Parise as your best forward versus your 3rd best.

Suter Letang probably means we dump Orpik quicker too.

Martin turned out for us like Pettersson did, in that he had an okay time in the top 4 but did absolutely nothing to move the needle.

Hoo f***ing ray.
Wonder how it felt for Martin and Orpik to get booted from the team only to watch them win back to backs the following two years, lol.

"Why yes, yes - you were indeed the problem".

Penguins fans shit talking Orpik and especially Martin makes no sense to me. Martin was a legitimately good top pair D for them in 12-13 and 13-14, along with being a good middle pair guy in 10-11 and 14-15. Orpik slowed down by the end, but he was still a major part of the 2009 cup team.

None of the defensemen on any of those cup teams deserve shit being thrown at them IMO. Now granted Orpik was a shitbag of a person from everything we heard, so I’m a bit more willing to throw shade his way, but everyone else doesn’t deserve it.

Brooks Orpik was the 6th best defenseman on the 2009 cup team and sucked every year after.

Orpik had "The Shift." Aside from that, his lasting legacy as a Pen is costing Sid an additional art ross + hart because he can't hit the net.

Oh, and leading the "Take the C away from Sid" campaign during the neck issues. Dude can f*** right off.

Now, now, Orpik also scored the series clinching goal against the islanders, in OT, that same season he broke Sid's jaw.

But yea, **** him, seriously.

It wasn't just him.

If I remember correctly, it was him, Staal, Cooke and Adams.

Orpik SUCKED

Was he ever the worst d-man of his era on the pens? Maybe not.

But he couldn't clear a crease ever. Unless the whistle blew, then Mr tough guy would cross check someone onto MAF.
