The team isn't even that bad. Our bottom-6 is atrocious. That's actually something you can retool in an off-season. The top-6 is incredibly-good, based on fancy stats. They've had some horrible injuries on D and G... i think just NOT doing this trade puts you so far ahead.

Like, i don't think i'm ODing on Copium, this team could have actually been something next year if they just waited 3 months for all the fat to fall away

I agree. It’s just really depressing to see this JR level move.

Why even post anything from him?

He clearly is not in "The Know".
Because he was pretty accurate about Letang and Malkin's contract situations.

Hextall spoke with the representatives for each player over the past two days and moved closer to Letang’s ask for a contract of at least four or five years, a team and several league sources said.

The Penguins’ offer to Malkin before talks Tuesday was for two years at a $6 million annual salary, multiple league sources and a team source said. Malkin could be willing to take such a drastic salary reduction, but only if the Penguins sign him for four years, a league source and a team source said.

Is he overly dramatic? Yeah. Is he wrong from time to time? Sure. But he does have SOME sources in the organization.

If Granlund declines even a little the Pens will have to hold on to him and suffer just like Carter. And he will be the teams 3rd 5 million winger. It’s ridiculous. He basically just flushed a 2nd down the toilet instead of using more picks to get somebody who might make a difference.
I am hardly approving the moves.

Just keeping some perspective.

Even if this goes belly up as most think that it will, it hardly would have moved the needle going forward had it not happened.

The core is another year older next year.

Accept the reality.

Right now it is akin to a coroner's job. You can hardly kill a corpse again by making a mistake.

The only saving grace here is that Hextall only paid a 2nd for him and I imagine the Penguins can move Granlund in the future as long as he's healthy and producing well. But yeah, really baffling decision to bring him on at his full salary.
yeah, i'm just tired of the last 5 years being "it's a mistake, but it's a correctable mistake!"

it's so exhausting

But hey we kept are first which might produce an NHL player in like 5 years who will be good at shootouts I bet.

Count on Rossi for the most idiotic take.

The only change was dropping a couple dozen draft spots from round two to round three.

Do I like the move?

No.

The worst part is taking up the freed cap space this summer.

But am I happy the Pens did not mortgage the future for something that never was going to happen?

Yes.

JR has made multiple much worse moves. We just put one on waivers

This one does not even rate in the top 50 worst moves.

We got a 2024 pick and gave up 2023 pick. So we moved to a worse draft too

This is worse than a JR move.

At least Kap and Zucker were younger when they were picked up.
It is absolutely nowhere near as bad as the Zucker deal. I say that as someone who wanted Zucker before we got him, and has been a defender of Zucker's this season.

A 1st in the 15th overall range and the team's best blueline prospect by miles for Zucker at $5.5 million for 3 and a half more years with zero retained is much worse.

But this move sucks shit. It was "the fans are angry, I gotta make a move to say I made a move".

JR would have traded Pickering and a 1st for Granlund instead of just a 2nd.

Hextall's thing is cost effective stupid decisions, as opposed to JR's aggressive stupid decisions.
Exactly.

I don't like this at all.

But am greatful that it was very limited damage.

It could have been a lot worse. We have seen a lot worse.

JR wouldnt have traded for Granlund is the point. He is gona end up a more expensive Kapanen.

Nah acquiring Granlund is the exact kind of move he would have done. He would claim something like "I know why his results are bad" or some shit like that and claim he's the smartest guy in the room.

JR would have paid a 1st+ for him and the Pittsburgh media would be slurping at his nuts to say why this is actually a good deal.

Zucker still has value and probably could recoup a first if they traded him.

Preds thought Grandlund was a cap dump
