I don't think the core is the problem. At least not production-wise. Well, Letang maybe is part of the problem.

But you look at the Bruins and Marchand and Bergeron are roughly the same age as Sid and Geno. Their cap this season with Pasta is about the same as Sid and Geno's cap hit not even including Letang. That's definitely a problem. But I don't know how anyone can remedy that though. It's not like our core is vastly overpaid or anything like that. We just need them to rip up their contracts and sign for like 2 million fewer dollars each. If a couple of other players joined in and did the same thing, that would be great too.
Except you can’t renegotiate. This isn’t the NFL. I don’t mind their cap hits. It’s their ages which is the issue.

Should Hallander have played more in the NHL this year? Yeah, but him quitting on making the NHL to go back to Finland isn’t the Penguins fault.

If it’s a family decision, I respect it entirely but will still say I think it’s a bizarre decision. If he rage quit because he wasn’t getting NHL minutes at age 21-22 while he also wasn’t doing anything special in the AHL, he’s just a baby.
It's not the Penguins fault and I respect him for doing it, but it does suck to lose a guy who could have been a cheap young bottom six winger.

I don't like the concept of chasing 3C. Realistically I want to see a total change up.

I wouldn't mind seeing Geno w/ Sid and maybe Rakell.
Jake with someone else and something new 2C.
a 3C heavier checking line
4th line of energy.

We have to change things up. We can't have a conversation in 2023 about who can be the new Jordan Staal.
Coulda been ROR this year.

But ya know...Hextall.

I think if we bring in a good GM that is high on him, that changes the conversations the GM and coach have.

We're likely to have much more man-games lost next year up front. With Hallander gone and Nylander likely becoming a regular imo (Sully liked his 2-way game a lot), who's next in line for call-ups?

I'm not even ruling out Puustinen in from the jump. We need budget AAVs. Needs to crush training camp though. If he sucks then things are more grim.
I liked Gruden's game.

Probably going to be some guys on waivers than can fill Hallander’s spot as the extra forward.

Benoit-Oliver Groulx has to clear waivers to be sent down. Anaheim has 14 forwards that are under contract or RFA, not including him.

Yeah but we can easily find a league min guy to replace what he would have brought.

I hate these comparisons/what if scenarios. There's zero guarantee the Pens would've picked Maccelli.
I dont really get too worked up about something like this. But I still cant believe we traded barzal for Perron and a first for reaves

I hope our new GM is smart enough to do that and doesn't just spend 3 million on McGinn 2.0 instead...
Fingers crossed. ...fingers...crossed.

I did some research a while ago - aside from Barzal and K Andre Miller, none of thr picks we traded since 2005 turned into anything. Shout out to Dzingle though who was taken with the 7th we sent to Ottawa for Kovalev

More specifically, there was not .uch to write home about in thr 5+ positions after each pick.

One of the Douglas Murray 2nd round picks was Tyler bertuzzi. Nice 3rd guy on a scoring line.

I wonder if Hallander would have come back if Sullivan wasn’t the coach. Anyone under 30 tied to this organization know they won’t get a shot to play in the NHL unless it’s strictly fourth line duties.

Remember when people were defending Hextall for the McCann trade? Something is wrong with McCann! Look how many teams he’s played for during his short career! He’s trash! Hextall is smart for protecting Blueger and Carter! You can’t find centers easily, but 40 goal scorer wingers grow on trees.

Hextall should have been fired on the spot after the expansion draft. This wasn’t hindsight.

Carter is trash and Blueger was a healthy scratch every game in the playoffs for Vegas thus far. This should go down as one of the worst trades in Penguins history. Not quite as bad as the naslund deal, but it was awful. The fact that they let this idiot run the team after this deal is a joke, and that it took so many people to realize Hextall was horrendous for years after this trade is sad.

But moves like this is what makes it so easy for the media to blame Hextall for our woes. If he wasn’t so awful at his job, maybe people would wake up and see Sullivan is awful too. But again, it took people years to see the light when it came to Hextall being a fraud - it’s not surprising people still defend Sully.

I thought nylander was terrrrrrible earlier in his games with us

Really showed some decent bottom six progress near the end of his NHL time

Plus, this team needs more of these $775k contracts and less inflated mil+ ones

No reason not to resign Nylander and it's not like he's getting a better situation anywhere else. He knows there will be spots open. Glad to have him back.

Indeed. I must have missed that.
