Nylander didn’t look out of place in the top 6, but I certainly wouldn’t pencil him in there. I think he’s like an ERod kind of guy, the ERod we acquired 2-3 years ago. Add enough depth where he’s your 13th or 14th forward. When there’s injuries you don’t wanna slot some plug in with Geno, you want it to be someone with skill.

Excellent start to the off-season!
This is gonna be a bargain come this time next year.

The fact that he was one of our better Forwards defensively sealed it for me. He can shore up Malkin's often sloppy L2 that way, or he can cope with heavy D-zone starts in Sully's bottom 6. Makes me wonder if he could PK as well. Need those guys after losing Blue and McGinn.

I'll be pleasantly surprised if Nylander isn't in permanent scratch territory by Christmas.

I don't really give a shit about bottom-6 guys and believe you can pretty much throw anybody out there on the 4th line especially as long as they're not a dramatic liability, so I would be fine running a WBS/younger bottom-6. I just don't think that's how the coaching staff (or FO) is gonna see it, whoever they end up being. NHL coaches and FO folks can't help but keep the roster stocked to the gills with "veteran experience" and all that bullshit--and pay a pretty penny to do so.

I'd be fine with him being a regular, but if we have enough depth that he's a 13th or 14th guy that's not bad either.

Very pleased it's a one-way deal. This is exactly the type of move the Pens need to get good at making. Cheap, effective, forwards.

Team needs another top 6 winger.

No to bringing back Zucker, and no to Nylander playing in the top 6.
I'm fine with no to Zucker if we go for a Timo Meier (I know wrong wing), or Tyler Bertuzzi etc.

I also wouldn't mind giving Jonathan Drouin a "prove it" $1M contract. Guy has talent and like Evander Kane, has issue.

I think Meier is gonna stay in NJ, and if he heads to FA, he's instantly head and shoulders above the other forwards available, so you're looking at a bidding war with an absurd contract to follow.

It's a bit incorrect to lump Drouin's off-ice issues in with the kinda baggage Kane's lugging around too, imo.

the takes on Nylander in here are hilarious. Dude blows. If he is close to being a NHL regular next year this team f***ing sucks.
You really think so? He did a lot of good things imo, and I'd like to see him given more of a look. My only real complaint with his game was the finishing, but he only played 9 games and generated some quality looks.

Dude put up a 63% Corsi in his limited time here, and a 64% 5v5 xgoals.

Those numbers aren't gonna continue if he gets regular time but he looks like someone who could theoretically be a solid contributor.

We could do a lot worse for the price, and he is imo worth the risk. The Pens are gonna have to find bargains like that to rebuild the forward group.

Danny Shirey did a good article on the type of impact Nylander had in his limited time here. Again, small sample, but I think this is a smart move for the Pens.

Yes. He’s the exact type of player who we need to move away from.

I want hungry, emotional players on this squad. Not the Heinen, Nylander, Granlund crowd that Sully loves.

I just wanna get younger and better. I think Nylander potentially fits that bill. At worst he's fine as a 13th or 14th forward for that price.

And if playing him lets us spend big bucks on an impact player elsewhere that could be nice too.

If this team's gonna give a "prospect" a shot, give it to Puustinen. He actually has an NHL caliber shot, stands to serve a purpose aside from being a warm body, and may actually turn into something if things break perfectly for the dude.

Nylander's just there. I don't dislike the guy--I'd rather have the team paying somebody peanuts to fill a roster spot than the kind of money they've been paying bottom-6 shitbags lately--but he's just a dude. He's AHL fodder. He's the forward version of Ruhwedel.

I’d rather just give that money to someone who actually has an intriguing skill.

What does Nylander do “great”? Ain’t a great skater, ain’t a great play maker, ain’t a great shooter.

Poehling and DOC are at least big with speed.

One of the big issues since 2017 is we keep targeting “Jack of all trades” players.

Focus on defining roles in areas of the roster and fit players there that have those defined skills. If you want defensive guys in the bottom six that are tough to play against and can PK get them. The Kampfs, Bellemares, and Lowrys of the world. Stop playing players like Nylander and Heinen down there.

Puustinen-Geno-???
DOC-Granlund-Rust
Nylander-Poehling-Carter

Give Puustinen a shot in camp/pre-season to carve out a spot. Find a winger to do the grunt work for that 2nd line. Think that's about what I'd go with. I probably forgot a player or two because I can't be bothered remembering any of these f***ing dudes besides Sid and Geno. I'd personally run Granlund on the 4th line (DOC-Poehling-Rust, Nylander-Granlund-Carter) because he sucks shit, but that won't happen.

6.1M AAV - 1 year left. He has no NMC/NTC and no say in his destination, unless management abides by his wishes.
If they're gonna rebuild then now is the time, while he still has some term and they can get a great return.

If he's available then go all-in for him.

If Winnipeg doesn’t rebuild they are damn morons.

That team needs to be blown to smithereens.

I don’t pony up for Helle though. He’s going to cost a ton. Rather try to peel Ehlers or Lowry out of there.

So he really wants a Cup and does not want to be part of a team that needs a massive rebuild? …boy is he gonna be happy in Pittsburgh lol

What would Morrissey cost us? Could replace Dumo easily.
