Salary Cap: Penguins Salary Cap Thread: We suck again summer edition

Why is Winnipeg trading Hellebuyck? Not seeing anything in their pipeline.

Boils down to being a pending UFA next season and the franchise questioning whether or not to go for a serious re-tool. PLD has made it known he intends to hit UFA after next season and the consensus is Scheifele will too. Recouping assets for their impending UFAs could help them avoid completely blowing things up.

Begrudgingly yes, but I wonder if Ottawa would be on Jake's no trade list. It's a risky move but this team obviously needs a major shakeup.
If you trade Jake I would think it would either be to get a younger player or a different type of player ala Neal for Hornqvist.

I’m not sure trading a small finesse winger for a smaller softer finesse winger is the kind of shake up we would want.

I'd rather keep Jake and give them something else for Debrincat.

Maybe they'd bite on like Poj + 1st or Smith + 1st. I'd consider doing either of those. That's not super far off in value from what he got dealt for last year.

I agree for the most part, but the other main factor for being in favour of it is age. Both of them will be landing some sort of 8-9M x 8 deal next season. I'd rather be giving it to the 26 year old rather than the 29 year old.

I don’t think Debrincat is an improvement on Jake…I also wouldn’t re-sign Jake and want to trade him this summer but I’d like
To get someone much younger, like Mercer or someone like that, young RFA or someone on ELC

Debrincat for Guentzel seems like kind of a lateral move to me. Id try to trade for Cat for futures only if possible. I would trade Guentzel for someone who brings a different dynamic like a Matthew Tkachuk. Unfortunately guys like that rarely become available.
He was available last summer bc he didn’t want to sign in Calgary…I doubt the Pens tried to trade Jake but that would’ve been a better trade for Calgary…and maybe we could have included Dumo in place of Weeger lol

Looking at FA, the only decent options for Goalies seem to be Hill, Varlamov and Korpisalo. None of these guys are really starter material though, they seem to be 1B at best. It really does seem that the only options are a trade.

I dont think Jarry will be re-signed with how hes played the last few years.

Maybe you can trade the 14th+ some other things for Swayman+ Grzelcyk?

Pettersson-Letang
Grzelcyk-Petry
POJ/Smith-Rutta

Swayman

Doesnt look bad. Grzelcyk has a cheaper cap hit than Dumo and Swayman shouldnt cost a ton coming off his ELC. Gives you some extra space to revamp the bottom-6.

Boston wouldn't trade swayman. Teams are doing 1a & 1b no matter the cap issues. They wouldn't trade him eastern conference

If the Pens are earnestly trying to be competitive and really want to make a splash with a legit starting goalie, they should be targeting Saros IMO.

That's who I'd trade Jake for.

Gibson but only if we got a sweetener like retention or a prospect.

Saros should be our target.

Jake for Cat does nothing for this team.

I dont think they really have a choice. They have a big carry over bonus penalty coming next season because of the Bergeron and Krejci contracts. They have only around 5-6 million to acquire a 1C, 2C, Backup and fill out a couple of other positions.

Swayman gives us nothing. He's a 1b goalie that caught the wave Boston rode this year. Funny how dominant teams always have stud goalies (cough, Murray) - who suddenly look human on mediocre or bad teams.

Swayman, to me, is the biggest trap someone will walk into this Summer. Outside of Jarry, that is.

Not true on the 9M portion. His QO is 1 year at 9M. But I believe he'd rather take more than 9M TOTAL in real money over an extended period of time. His career could end at any moment and.

Why would he do that when he's guaranteed 9 mil, gets to play with Sid and Malkin for a year and then cash in on UFA?

The top 6 might be the least of this teams problems tbh.

I think you get a different coach in there and the teams finishing just magically stops being ass.

Our top 6 forwards scored 171 goals this year. That’s probably amongst the better top 6s in the league. Boston’s scored 173. Big difference is their 7-9 forwards scored about 50. We only had 2 other forwards even hit double digits, Carter & McGinn. Granlund had 9 in Nashville + 1 here if you wanna count that.

Just terrible secondary scoring.
