Salary Cap: Penguins Salary Cap Thread: We suck again summer edition

Gibson has an awful contract. I get he’s played behind a bad defense but it seems like a big risk.

I’m certainly not giving up a ton of assets for that.
Pens trade Granlund to team A at 25% and a 3rd, team A trades him to Ducks at 50%. Ducks eat 400K of Gibsons contract.

I rather go hard after Helle though.

Not interested in Gibson at all…he’s not very good..what the Pens should do, because Boston is cap strapped and has a $4.5M overage penalty, is try to trade for Swayman’s rights or just go offer sheet him…
Says it all when I'm pretty convinced that our board lawyer - with no front office NHL experience - would do a better job GM'ing the 2023-24 Pens than Hextall with his 2022-23 Pens.

That‘s probably the best way to go. Bringing in a young goaltender with a lot upside, which is still kind of cheap.

First order of business after hiring the new GM is a meeting with Sullivan and saying he has to adapt to todays NHL as to size, grit and talent and fit as to the roster. Second is Granlund trade with retention or buyout. Third no signing for dumo. Fourth a physical D man I offer Soucy a deal. I would make a decision on Jarry as to a one year prove it deal or let him walk. Shop Petry and see what he can bring back. RH D men with his pedigree are not in big supply. Sid would really hate to lose Jake but I certainly think he is a fit elsewhere and I move him for a physical LW for starters. Zucker if the GM fells he can play at a high level for another 3 years, 3 years 4 million to stay.

We don’t have the picks to offer sheet.
Depends what the contract offer is, doesnt it? If you make him a contract offer of $4.201+ then it’s a first and third and we have both I think

edit: nevermind..I thought we could use the third round pick we got from NJ but we can’t

Yeah you have to have your original picks. I guess you could do what Burke did for Kessel and acquire those picks.

I think UT is annoying for the most part but he's spot on with this.

I also like how he rightfully criticized JR more than Hextall. Yeah, Hextall's time as the Penguins GM was a bad move after bad move outside of the Rakell trade. But the issues with this team stemmed far beyond Hextall's time as GM, and his bad moves directly follow the horrible mismanagement by JR in his last few years with the Penguins.

I firmly believe JR is more to blame for the Penguins current situation than Hextall. Had JR drafted well and not hemorrhaged assets from 2018-2021, they wouldn't have the horrendous depth problems they have now. It's the opposite of when JR lucked out by getting Shero's draft picks come up in 2016.

Out of goalies with 30+ starts in Goals saved above expected:
2022-23: 37th out of 42
2021-22: 39th out of 44
2020-21: 15th out of 24
2019-20: 43rd out of 45

Pens fans need to let go of the past when it comes to Gibson. He hasn't had an actual good season since 2018-19. It doesn't help us that he's more durable than Jarry if he'd be outplayed by DeSmith in those surplus games. Bringing him here is asking for a spectacular turnaround with no statistical backing.

I too wanna unload Granlund but not at the cost of screwing over our goaltending! That's just death.

Gibson‘s not-great contract and not-great numbers is exactly why I want him: the price shouldn’t kill us, and hell they might even eat salary (or find an intermediary to do so).
He is so OBVIOUSLY demoralized there, there's no reason for him to just suddenly be a bad goalie in his physical prime.

Why would anyone want Gibson for free even. He's been terrible for years.

Not like our defense is any better either.

Because he's obviously demoralized, and his numbers are a product of a terrible defense.

Drew Doughty was suddenly garbage on a rebuilding team.. and then as soon as they got competitive he started trying again and shockingly, he was still good and didn't forget how to play hockey.

Yah, right. Why would playing in Pittsburgh be any better. The Penguins were awful at defense all year.

I’m like 50/50 on Gibson working out here but it’s that or some overpaid and equally questionable UFA, or hoping Boston trades us Swayman out of the kindness of their hearts.

Or we just try to get Andersen or Raanta for 1 year and kick the can down the road until next summer.

People said the same thing about Carey Price -- until he almost singlehandedly carried a shitty Habs team to the Cup finals.

Talented goalies can look mediocre when they're facing 40+ shots every night and their team doesn't win much. It's a different story when these guys look like shit on good teams.

Found our diamond in the rough GM candidate.

You 2 willing to risk the next couple of seasons based on this trivial assumption? His last good season was 4 years ago. His last good playoffs was 6 years ago.
Just to be clear, we are talking about the most important position here. The one that decides a playoff berth above all others.
If you're wrong then it doesn't matter what the rest of the players do.
