Speculation: Penguins off day talk thread: Yes, Sully is still the coach

I sat next to RJ Umberger at the Steelers game tonight. Vented a lot of Pens frustration to him without recognizing who he was at first. Good times.
That sucks

For him :sarcasm:

I remember this one guy just going on and on about real estate during a baseball game

Like... I'm here for the baseball game, guy

Haha nah wasn't thaaaaaat bad. His buddy was directly next to me and he had mentioned he lived in Columbus during small talk. I asked if he went to any blue jackets games, he said ya. Season ticket holder. His buddy asked if I was pens fan. I said I have a love/hate relationships right now. And then RJ asked what was that about. And his buddy switched me seats and we got into a bit. Was actually really wholesome. Had a great time. But he assured me Sullivan wasn't the problem. I won't dish on who he ragged on but I respect what he said.

That’s cool.

Man, glad I've missed the last couple games. Looks like I was wrong to have any faith in the team making the playoffs at this point.

Can't wait to lose to San Jose and have no-one in Pens land question if we maybe need a shakeup.

Mann you can’t just tease us this way and not say the name. What’s your Onlyfans for the rest of the story, I’ll sub.

If he didn't think Sully was the problem, then he's an idiot.

Yes, Hextall was really that bad. But also the dooks yes.
I don't think Hextall was that bad, it's becoming clear that Sullivan is untouchable. We got the Norris winner and even he doesn't look right here under Sully.

I think what became most glaring under Hextall was that there was no fix for Sullivan for any player he got. Also how many he had to let go that were good that Sullivan refused to use correctly or he had to move because it was clear Sullivan never saw them as their guys.

Right now under Dubas, we're off to the worst start than 2005-06.

Yeah, that's pretty f***ing bad mate.

Ah the age old... is it Hextall or is it Sullivan?

Sleepy enabled Sully (Carter extension) while also making befuddling, nonsense moves to seemingly spite Sully (Kap extension, Granlund).

Both of these guys need the axe to see real change. It's not about one or the other.

Keep the slide going, i guess, that's our best chance at a new HC.

I didn't think about Hextall at all. Couldn't muster up any reason to care about it, the bigger problems where other than him and older than him.

Then came the Granlund trade.
Went from 0-100 at record speed.

It's wild. Like I know Hextall was not a good GM by any means and I do not want to imply or suggest or say otherwise, but you do have to wonder if Sully wasn't sandbagging him with things like "don't play perfectly servicable 5-6 defensemen who the GM explicitly acquired" or "try to play Mikael Granlund as your key 3C".

Just ridiculous disconnect from GMs and coaches and over multiple GMs too.

Hextall's mistakes shouldn't be minimized or anything, but man, Sully did not actually do last year's team any favors.

I think Hextall's worse mistake was the Kraken debacle. Protecting Carter and losing both McCann and Tanev was a WTF moment.

Not realizing that Tanev/McCann were more useful than how they were used is on Sully. Either one of them is an upgrade on our 3rd/4th line right now.

I agree with the slide. Even if we go 20 in badly, we can turn it around and still make the playoffs with a new HC.

Why? I demand to know…you can’t leave me hanging like this! Lol

Here's the thing I'm struggling with when people say the top 6 is playing so well, but is being tanked by Jarry.

Why does the top 6 have the 6 lowest on ice save percentages among the forwards?

They are all well below what would be considered acceptable save percentages for a goalie, but the bottom 6 all have solid-to-fantastic save percentages. I'm really not trying to defend Jarry here. I was against re-signing him and I agree the dude couldn't make a big save if his life depended on it. But the gap here is too big to be ignored IMO.

The only explanation I can come up with is that they are giving up more quality chances either because a) they are that bad defensively and/or b) are selling out to produce offensively. Either way, I don't think it is helping the team win games as much as some people believe.

I guess there is also c) bad luck, in which case "trust the process".

Whoa, when did they start playing goal in tandem?

Bleeding away useful players like Friedman has been an issue for several years. I’ll give the staff some love for identifying Shea as I think he’s been good, but I don’t understand Ruh over Friedman.

I also think goaltending can only be the issue so many times before we examine why the goaltending is faltering. You posted Jack’s take on this team. We are putting a mediocre goaltender in the valley of death through our lack of structure in the neutral zone and over commitment in the offensive zone.

yeah I think there’s an element of top six trying to sell out for offense…too bad that isn’t working lol since we have no true scorers on those lines….Geno’s save % is a weird outlier because his line mates aren’t that bad…there’s some bad luck involved as he’s not had any direct impact on those goals and probably the second biggest factor is having his line out so much with the third pairing lol
