Speculation: Penguins off day talk thread: Yes, Sully is still the coach

Reporter: "what is the plan for 2024 TDL and the future?"
Dubas: "To get younger"
You: "Durrrr...but you signed them guys last off season! So like yeah right!"

Like I said, I can't tell if you're trolling or if you're being serious.

Yes. Not sure why it’s weird to question a GM who said he wants to get younger when all he did was sign old players to term.

The infuriating thing with Sullivan is that at the end of the day it isn't actually about being a good coach in an abstract sense because you know the Xs and Os or whatever. Sullivan is a good coach mechanically, but there are a ton of guys sitting at home or coaching in the minors who are also good coaches mechanically.

Sullivan brought what the team needed in 2016. He doesn't in 2024. Part of that is probably that our team is different, part of that is probably that the game is different, and part of that is probably that Sullivan has been around for years and knows all the players personally and it's tougher to make hard decisions when you know and trust the people those decisions will impact.

Maybe all they need is a new coach who isn't working on preconceptions about who plays well together and who needs to get how much ice time to get into a game and so on. Maybe the group just doesn't have the talent to get it done and they'll be just as bad with a new coach. The thing is that it doesn't really matter, because we've seen what the team under Sullivan looks like for years now and it isn't very good and it hasn't significantly changed.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here but good lord is it wild how scared FSG and/or Dubas are of letting the guy go.

Yeah I don’t think the Pens are the Steelers. People will stop going. Especially since not only are we bad, we’re incredibly boring to watch as well.

I think even the Steelers had a dip in attendance last year in some games, I recall seeing some games that had a noticeable amount of seats empty.

With how expensive everything is today, people aren't just going to go to sporting events if the product sucks.

We're 50odd games into the season.

The powerplay is historically bad. Literally... it's the worst ever.

Todd Reirden still has a job. And we're over here asking what the GM could do? There's your low hanging fruit!
I never understood the low hanging fruit saying TBH. What does it even mean? Is fruit better the higher it is in the tree?

Lol…there’s your “deep respect” for the coaching staff and how he meets with Sullivan…he’s going nowhere folks…

sullivan can help us win and develop players…yep, blind…no discussion about Mike
What did I tell you Andy? i HAVE Said IT TIME AND TIME AGAIN HE'S HERE FOR A WHILE. Going out of his way to praise Sully.

For the record, I fully believe that Dubas doesn't have the authority to fire Sullivan and Sullivan's job is locked down safe due to FSG being in absolute love with him. With that being said, Dubas absolutely has the power to fire assistant coaches and it's inexcusable that they have done literally no moves to the coaching staff with how the team has performed.

This team isn't very good, but they'd be a playoff team with just fixing the powerplay. It is inexcusable that Dubas hasn't made a coaching change with Rierden yet, even taking Sullivan out of the equation entirely.

Y’all are being dramatic. Dubas is not going to flame anyone- coach, players, scouts, or team performance outwardly to the media nor should he.
You wanna talk ppl up especially if you're gonna trade them. He wants to dress them up like a used car salesmen would a broken down lemon! I love it (if it works).

I kinda missed what he said about Jake cuz I tuned in a few minutes late. I kinda got the gist that they're not planning to move him and they were gonna have to weigh how each side fits into the other's longterm plans this summer.

Even if he's not allowed to fire him, that doesn't mean he has to slobber all over him every time he's asked about him.

I think the answer is probably more simple. Dubas likes Sullivan, too.
