Speculation: Penguins off day talk thread: Yes, Sully is still the coach

It's gonna f***ing rule to watch Sid feel the effects of his age or get injured next year just to hear more of this shlock from coaching and the FO about how it's just a buncha unfortunate events. They're still for sure an upper echelon team, promise guys. Please keep paying for an ever-worsening, increasingly unwatchable product brought to you by people petrified by indecision to an embarrassing degree.

I might be a "usual suspect" as I don't think Dubas did a bad job at all...but then again, I don't go to Olive Garden expecting an authentic Italian experience.

He's know the future of the team. It's not hard. They have a core that they need to support until they retire or ask out. Then it's rebuild time. There is nothing hard to understand about that. We've all know that. What was he supposed to say otherwise?

Even if someone asks about Sullivan, Dubas is not going to roast him in a presser about the TDL. It's just not going to happen. Expecting him to and then chastising him for not doing so is not on Dubas; it's on you.

He said the TDL is like a game of poker. Do you show your hand to those you're playing cards with? No. So I mean, I'm really not sure what people were expecting here.

On the "message to the fans", again, what did you want him to say? He's right when he points to the game last night where they were "close" but it's just not going our way for one reason or another. Who is to blame for Neds missing that Pelech shot from the blue line? They fought back 2 goals down.
There’s a difference between not roasting Sullivan and going on and on about how you meet with him weekly and have a deep respect for him and then outright say there’s nothing to discuss when it comes to the coach…he endorsed him…so that means Sullivan is going nowhere unless he wants out

I mean... at least a hefty part of that is on the coach for getting cute and starting Eller/Smith in OT leading to an extended shift where they were getting abused only to make a terrible change and leave Crosby and Letang in a bad situation that they made even worse. The GM can do things about the coaching staff. Or maybe this one can't. I dunno.

Dubas should have known damned well coming into this job that there is no time left to "assess." That was a big part of the challenge, here. I'm largely OK with most of the roster itself put together this year but I'm seriously beginning to wonder if he's up to the overall task.

I've suggested Rust for Copp. I think that would be a solid swap for both sides considering how well Compher is doing at 2C.
I've suggested Copp before, too, but I would be concerned he'd pout about being traded here (like the rumors about Smith). He's from Ann Arbor and would be going from a good young team with it's best days in front of them to......well.....this.

The thought of Mike Sullivan still being coach in 5 years “developing” young players by playing them 4 games, and scratching them the first time they make a mistake for Harkins (who of course is still on the team) is enough to make me never watch this team again.

Did Dubas just hold a press conference to say nothing is changing and it will work itself out?

The arrogance of this guy. I was so optimistic about this hire.

What was the point of the press conference? You wanted to tell everyone that you have no plan and the team will continue to be shit?

It’s so funny how Hextall got so much shit for not having a plan and the media laps up Dubas’ comments.

The plan is to get younger. But you signed Acciari, Eller and Nieto to term and traded for EK65.

I can't tell, are these serious posts or are these just trolls?

Did we even watch the same press conference?

Like... if poow wittle Towd Weewden is gonna get his feewings hurt being fired... can they not like... bring in a "specialist" and tell Todd to concentrate on fawning over Kris Letang's hair or whatever else it is he does besides hamfist the powerplay into embarrassing obscurity?

f*** man.

Y’all are being dramatic. Dubas is not going to flame anyone- coach, players, scouts, or team performance outwardly to the media nor should he.
Then at least outline a vision of how to get this team out of its rut or where you want to go with it. There was really no reason to even have this at all except for the fact that management and Sully are lil bitchasses who don’t like criticism, however milquetoast it may be.

Pretty clear they tried to compete this summer and now that they aren’t competitive, they aren’t doubling down on it. Which is a good thing. A lot of GMs would.

I think there’s merit in criticizing the signings and roster construction (Graves especially) but IMO I think it’s incorrect to criticize the direction they went in this summer.

I'm glad we're all as apathetic and done with this team as I've been. I'm less glad that my "they stopped giving a f*** years ago and love the smell of their own shit to realize they're trash" theory is seemingly true.

I never really understood how this works.

For the guys with limited NTC, they submit a list at the beginning of the year, right? So maybe he doesn't need to ask those guys as long as he's talking to teams that aren't on the list.

For the full NTC guys, Crosby, Malkin, Letang, and Karlsson aren't going anywhere.

So that really just leaves Rust and Big Jeff. If they were looking to trade those guys, do they ask them to waive and then go look for a trade? Or do they see if there is any interest and then go to them and say "will you waive for X?"
I think for the full no trades you see if there is a deal you would want to make before you ask a guy if he would waive. You don't want to upset a player by asking if he would leave only to turn around and say I couldn't find a trade I liked.

He did though. He said they’re not moving futures, they want to focus on getting younger, they would consider hockey trades and want to keep the core 4 to have some talent/experience in the room for prospects to play with.

They’re not going to put out the detailed step by step memorandum to fans and it’s impossible to predict the future anyway.

I really fail to see how anything at that presser is making y’all mad. That was the most honest this team has been about their competitive position since the B2B cups. Was exactly what I wanted to hear.

I mean... I dunno... maybe I'm vastly misinterpreting things but this PC inspired so little confidence in the direction of the team that it would have been better to not even do it. It isn't a matter of "well what should he have said" it's a matter of "if it was THAT then he shouldn't have, at all."

A lot of other GMs would have fired the effing coach too.

This team is going nowhere with Sully stuck in his ways that worked going on a decade ago.

This is like committing to keeping Mike Kennan around in 2002 because he won a Cup in 94 his way.

I would buy the “we want to get younger” line if we haven’t done literally everything the opposite that all season long. But hey, get younger by getting older. Sure.

No. I’m curious how what I said wasn’t delivered.
Reporter: "what is the plan for 2024 TDL and the future?"
Dubas: "To get younger"
You: "Durrrr...but you signed them guys last off season! So like yeah right!"

Like I said, I can't tell if you're trolling or if you're being serious.

As much as I agree it’s time for change IMO it doesn’t seem realistic to even hope for. Sullivan signed that extension, it hasn’t even kicked in, and it’s out of everyone’s hands here except for FSG.

Dubas didn’t hire Sully and didn’t extend him.

Like I said before, he’s not gonna go into that presser and start ripping Sullivan.
