Ty Smith sucks. Nobody even wanted him for free when he was on waivers.

Nobody wanted Forsling for free when he was on waivers too.

@AuroraBorealis ’s point and one that is largely 100% correct is Ty Smith has done nothing but exactly what this staff has wanted in NHL and AHL minutes and hasn’t gotten a single chance because of it. It’s bizarre.

Idk how you gather that he sucks after his call-up last year. More than adequate performance.

I also don't give a flying f*** about who claimed who. It's not an indication of anything. That's not how you measure a player. Teams make mistakes with waivers constantly throughout the year.

We claimed Harkins and he's dogshit. But a guy like Heinen didn't get picked up by anyone until like October and he's outperforming all our bottom-sixers this year.

Harkins has more 5v5 points in his last 10 than Heinen fwiw.

I do feel like the vast majority of bottom 6 NHL players are completely interchangeable. Unless they are really good at one particular thing, like Clutterbuck and hitting or ol' Yannic Perrault at faceoffs, they're all just basically the same player out there whose personal success is pretty dependent on the team they are on and system they use.

I largely agree, but in our case a few goal swing might make the difference between playoffs and golfing, so min-maxing the bottom-six could be essential. It was last year.

Not worth too much, considering where they're at on the year and what they're likely to end up with.
But I'm glad Harkins is playing better lately.

I wouldn't mind the Pens giving him a chance because everyone we've tried on our third pair kinda sucks.

But he does suck. Imo.

I'd love to be proven wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.

I'll grant you he had a shit camp, but that has limited meaning for me.
He's got 25 points 33 games in Wilkes. He might be able to help our PP. I'd say he's earned a call-up.

Now that we're back in control of our destiny, I fully expect a slump or injury given the way we've thrown away these opportunities the last couple years. We put together another good stretch of 10-15 games now and we're comfortably in. Then just have to get it up for a stretch of divisional games at the end of March.

a) Just in terms of whether waivers claims show whether a guy has got talent, the fact that Harkins is showing some of his AHL scoring after an adjustment period suggests his opening games might be misleading and he might have something

b) In terms of who I'd want, all those guys like Heinen and ERod were regular season lifesavers at point but didn't do much in the playoffs. A guy like Harkins with playoff build might go better. I'm happy to take the risk he can develop over the season.

And indeed, the opposite of that is why Heinen got left on the shelf for a long time. We'll see what he does for Boston post-season but skill guys without enough skill to stick in a top six and without enough grit for the bottom six are always floating around. It's why we have Hinostroza in the bottom six.

And tbh, as a dman version, it's why Smith went unclaimed. Maybe he rounds out and sticks in the NHL, maybe he doesn't. Maybe he's no better than Will Butcher, also in the AHL after showing he can help an NHL power play and little else.

Ty Smith seems to be playing much better as of late eh......?

He's still young in Dmen terms so hopefully he can be something. Even if it's to bring in need with a trade just due to the fact I don't expect him getting many mins with his style of play similar to EK/Letang.

I definitely won't be rooting against him

This presumes they'd kick one of the existing 5 guys off of PP1 so Smith could play. I don't think that's happening at all.

Smith can't get onto either PP unit unless one of EK or Letang are injured.

And if that's what creates an opening on the roster, then Smith still can't get a chance because EK/Letang are righties and so Sully won't want a lefty like Smith replacing them in the lineup.

PP time aside, the #3 pair should be Smith-Ludvig once Ludvig is healthy. It's not going to win any awards, but it's by far the best pairing we can muster without making a trade.

I don't have an issue calling up Smith but he's not going to play on the PP over Karlsson or Letang and he can't kill penalties so he'd purely be a 3rd pairing 5x5 guy.

And we’ve had so many close losses with multiple PP chances too. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say we might have 10 more points with a competent PP.
With even an average PP would be a force.

On the plus side bottom 6 big improvement from last year and of course goalie situation.

That's the Penguins problem with the bottom-6 for years now. The players have largely been plugs with lack of identity. We switch them out year in and year out and get the same results.

I think we're finally onto something with Lars Eller who is our best 3C since maybe Jordan Staal, but we still need bottom-6 guys with unique elements like Kunitz, Hagelin, Bonino, Kessel etc. You need those guys for a Cup run.

You can knock on him for being old but Corey Perry checks a lot of boxes. He's a big body that actually plays big, brings snarl, and best of all he forces Sully+Reiden's hand to re-think the PP.
