They were floating between a wild card and 9th and were still finding their groove. They would have made it once they got rolling.
They never looked good under Johnston, so I don't think they would have "Got rolling"

I predicted the Pens would miss the playoffs last year, and was wrong by one game. Made the same prediction this year, and still have a good chance to be correct. As I have been saying, for a long time, its not necessarily the coaches. The Pens have had, and continue to have, a deep structural problem with their team. They are top-heavy in the forward department, and most importantly, have only one NHL caliber top-4 D-man. Maatta may adequately fill that role in a year or two, but he's not there year. Furthermore, the one NHL quality D-man they do have is NEVER healthy, and management is aware of this limitation, yet do nothing to address it.
Please, those blaming coaches in Pitt: Please explain to me the system that works when you don't have NHL caliber D-men on your back-end. There is no worse blueline in the NHL. Crosby, Malkin, Kessel... nothing. They don't matter when you are hemmed into your own blueline the whole game. They don't matter when nobody can make a breakout pass.
Scructural issues. Address them!
Heh, even if I granted you Maata now, that leaves you at 1 1/2
I guess the Pens weren't aware of how crappy the Hurricanes were after 2007. Rutherford is an old relic and the current Penguins have one of the worst lineups in the league. It's too top heavy with little depth and a horrendous blueline.
We have three NHL calibre top 4 D, Letang, Maatta and Daley.
Daley is capable of playing the second pairing.
That is indeed the JR blueprint. He will then trade all picks and defensive prospects for even more forwards.
Dumoulin? How are you including Daley but not Dumoulin?
The Pens are a poorly constructed team overall. It seems like JR completely disregarded player styles and fits and just added a bunch of players based on their NHL 16 ratings. JR has done well on trades as in he hasn't lost more trades than he has won, but a lot of his trades have ended up backfiring pretty badly.

Seeing that Dallas fans couldn't thank him enough for leaving and that he got outplayed by Dmen from Rockford when Keith was out are you sure about your statement
He's assembled a team with some very nice individual pieces that have no chemistry between them.
On a below average team, like the Pens is this year. He is not a legit top 4 D on a contender.

I can still remember the media frenzy that the pens getting kessel made them a cup contender.
They have a worse PP than the Maple Leafs, a team that has no offensive talent. That's on the coaching.
It's still Bylsma's fault for all those bad habits they learned under him. They've already managed to shed the habit they had under him of winning a lot so they must be getting closer to washing him away completely.
Weird that the team keeps getting worse the further away he gets though. Even weirder he took over the worst team in NHL history and they are...one whole point worse than Pittsburgh already.
WHEN OH WHEN WILL PITTSBURGH BE FREE OF BYLSMA'S AWFULNESS!!!!!
...
Or maybe it's the players.
But, but, but they have the two best players in the world. It can't be the players.
It's not just the players though. It's an aura of arrogance that permeates the whole organization.
Not makjng excuses because there is certainly issues that need to be addressed but the pens have had terrible luck in the injury department. Making predictions that last year's team and this years team would miss the playoffs prior to the seasons show your just a hater, because no expert in hockey would make those predictions.
So far they're 2-5-1 under Sullivan with 14 goals scored with 5 of those coming in one game against the worst team in the league. I can't believe that the Leafs are only 3 points behind them.
The Pens look drastically better under Sullivan than they did under Johnston, but they still can't score for ****. Malkin sucking for the entire time Sullivan has been here hasn't helped either.
