Pittsburgh
I posted this on the trade discussion of this trade:

I think this is a mistake from Pitts. They just missed the playoffs and the core is not getting any younger. As a free agent or playoff mercenary I could understand, but they could miss the playoffs even with Karlsson next year. Why do they ruin their future rebuild?
We had this discussion on the Pens' board.

If you are playing a board game maybe it makes sense to cut bait and begin the rebuild early trading players like Crosby, Malkin, Letang and Jake for a small haul.

But that core brought three cups.

The Pens owe them and tge fans, if that is the players' choice to remain Pens for life which they have said it is, to allow them to ride off into the sunset in style. Give some chance for number four.

The cost was brutally minimal to do so.

Maybe the logical move may have slightly favored rebuilding now. But the hockey fan and human being move is exactly what the Pens did.

I think they actually improved their depth scoring with moving Granlund for Pitlick.

Granlund: 1.42 5v5 points/60 in the last 2 years
Pitlick: 1.87 5v5 points/60 in the last 2 years

Pitlick had 37 points in 66 games in 2021-2022.
Regardless of whether or not they did, EK was an element of scoring we didn't have previously, so our overall offensive game has gone up for sure.

Doobler.....take a bow my son. Take a f***ing bow.

Even if this winds up being a bust and somehow EK falls off a cliff, Dubas sat at the poker table, went all in, and didnt blink when the stakes were high and it was just him and Grier. And he wound up taking the pot when he was holding next to nothing (not a great analogy, but you know)

He did the thing Rutherford did when he first came here: didn't accept mediocrity, and swung for the fences. And like Rutherford's 12 months getting Horns, Perron and Kessel, Dubas has spent a couple of months getting us depth, moving out bad fitting players, and getting a new gamebreaking, 100pt talent. I'm floored right now.

Defense is for f***ing losers.

Drink up. He was doing this and scoring 100 points playing with nobodies.

I'm going to be watching this (and planning out which games to attend) every day for the rest of the summer.

To me it goes beyond whether the Pens owe the core anything.

The core is here. And they're here and playing well. Even if the Pens wanted to rebuild, they can't. The only way they can do that is by trading those guys, and none of them want to leave, and does Dubas or whoever really want to be the GM to ask them to? Are you gonna ask Sidney Crosby to ship himself out of town because you want to start the rebuild earlier? How about Malkin or Letang? Nah.

They're here, and so long as they are and are still playing well, this is the only course the team can realistically take. The tank will come when the core forces it by either asking out of town, retiring, or just plain declining due to age.

I’m not even a Pens fan, and I think this is a great deal for the Pens. Trading Karlsson for enough cap dumps that you actually SAVE $3 mil in cap space, while only giving up a 1st (probably 20th+ overall) and trading a 2nd down to a 3rd, that’s a steal.

If the Pens have good injury luck this year, and Guentzel comes back at 100% around November/December, I think you guys are legit contenders.

Hard to be upset at getting EK while unloading garbage like Granlund and not much of any real value, but why include Rutta? Not that he qualifies as "real value" either but at least he was functional and 3rd pair RD is, for now anyway, a smoking crater.

If we're seriously going to be running a 3rd pair of POJ-Ruhwedel then the top 4 better be able to play 55 minutes a night. And never, ever get hurt.

At least a pairing of Smith-Rutta would have been 2 actual NHL caliber players, albeit 3rd pair guys at best.

Rutta had to be included for cap reasons and he's not anything particularly good either:

Dude we kept both Petts and POJ (and Ty Smith who's 1/3 the cap hit of Rutta).... really hard to complain about Rutta at this point

Rutta counts $2.75M against the cap.

I share your hesitation about putting Ruhwedel in the starting lineup (hoping they have another plan there), but the cap doesn't work without including Rutta. To get a player like EK, you make the move and figure out 3RD later.
