Confirmed with Link: Penguins acquire Erik Karlsson for Granlund, 1st rounder in 2024, Rutta, Petry, DeSmith (more in first post)

Also the Penguins kept both POJ and Smith in this deal, who both can slide into the top-4 in case of injuries. If Letang or Karlsson gets hurt, Smith slides into the top-4 as a RD to replace them. If Graves or Pettersson get hurt, POJ slides into the top-4 as a LD to replace them.

It's why I wanted to keep Smith as a part of this deal. Having him as top-4 injury insurance for Letang and Karlsson makes a lot of sense to me.

While I am first and foremost a Leafs fan, the Penguins have always been my second favorite team since the Lemieux days and I watch as much as I possibly can. Love this deal. Thrilled to see Petry and Granlund on the way out and that we are going for it while we still have time with Crosby, Malkin and Letang still playing at high level. I like the moves we’ve made this off-season overall, but I think we still need another 3rd line quality player, 2 more D and not sold on Ned

I am all for a POJ - Smith Pairing.

POJ is pretty fast. Let Smith be aggressive and POJ can cover him. POJ had to be the puck mover on his pairings before with Rutta and Ruh

Maybe this will be Coffey 2.0? A guy can dream, right? Gotta’ wonder what Hexy felt like when he heard the news?

It worked out nice the last time this team traded for a 100+ point defenseman, yeah.

EK65 could literally drop 40 points off his total from last season and this trade would still be pretty good. Nobody cares about the cap implications as the well-established understanding is that we are looking at a like two year window, here.

This is the best part of the deal for the Pens

This is literally as close as I can think to the "lol sure just trade all our bad players for their good players" scenario. Plus did the Penguins actually get younger, here?

Also lol to the "sour grapes" now being the other way around up on the trade board. Now suddenly it's "good... the Penguins are old and suck and this is actually gonna make them worse." Convenient.
That's what I just said to my wife. Although she didn't understand at all what I was talking about.

Keep in mind Penguins Fans, EK65 has a history with injuries. He'll play 50-53 games of the 82 games season. Thanks for taking him off our hands. Hope you guys get to the playoff this year.
Same with all of our stars. Hell fit right in. They tend to win a cup every 6-7 seasons though, and it's due.

I forgot Legare was still here, he's either been hurt or doing jack dick since he turned pro looking like a bust at this point.

Yeah, that's what I figured. Granlund making $1.1 million ain't in the same realm as Granlund making $5 million x 2.

I've said this a bunch of times, but if Granlund was making $2 million a year, I would have wanted to keep him.

It's a wildly different animal to have a guy with those flaws making $1 million vs a guy with those flaws making $5 million.
