Well we basically know that they're not gonna give up entirely these last 2 years with Sid here. Too much respect for the vets. Too much pressure from FSG. Beyond that who knows.
I suppose better expected sooner is possible, with Dubas at the wheel. He's quite obsessed with restocking the farm and is very good at it. He has a lot more energy than older GM's. A lot to prove to others too.

It is very difficult to embrace a full rebuild and be back in the playoffs quickly though. It's hard to imagine Dubas will try a short re-tool like the Rangers did. We won't have their asset situation to build the foundation they did.
Can't picture fewer than 4 years between both playoff qualifications.

Just feel like if you have them at that time, that means you didn't go all-in these last 2 years. That is my expectation though. Dubas basically said he'd be straddling the fence.

I'm not saying we should keep them or that Dubas will keep them, just that they are far from useless.

I also think that what happens next with Dubas will be in reaction to events. There is clearly no set philosophy that overrides everything (see "I'll only deal a 1st for a long term high end young player" at the draft vs dealing a 1st for Erik Karlsson). I don't think he's going to sit tight at a deadline if things are going like the clappers. I don't think he's going to throw assets at a losing situation.

And from there we'll see what events give.

Some suggest that they got out of EK's contract as some sort of amazing feat. While they did shed that contract, they just picked up some glorified cap dumps in the process with minimal value currently. In two years that might be nice but it's gonna take a lot more than two years for them to be relevant again. And here's another thing, next years draft isn't forecasted to be nearly as good or deep this years.

I just see the cap space they might garner in a couple of years as not overly meaningful. It's not like they're one or two pieces from winning anything. Retaining more and accruing more assets with a team going nowhere seemed more savvy and in the big picture far more consequential. Maybe ownership out there is frugal, who knows. But they hardly maximized their best asset.
It's clear their owner didn't want to spend money he didn't have to to watch Karlsson play for another team. San Jose can either be expensive and bad or they can be cheap and bad. I'm sure it was an ownership prerogative to get as much Karlsson off the books as possible at the cost of getting an asset back. Karlsson was so transcendent last season that he was actively hurting their rebuild efforts anyway.

Wandered into some other fanbase threads to read Karlsson reactions and Philly's is by far the most positive re: the Pens. Really strange to read haha.
Dubas did a magnificent job. The sharks can all burn in hell.

Lmao I actually laughed when I read this. So extreme. God bless them.
I often wander into the Flyers' forum just to spectate on various threads and there's some real sharp, clear sighted peeps there.

Also a lot of very funny, caustic people too. I mean god knows they've had practice.

Definitely very self-aware by and large. Avoids the mass the delusions fans like Toronto, NY and Montreal fall into

The flyers board is wild. There's one poster going off about Dubas/Pens being bad meanwhile majority of their board is making fun of the guy and defending the Pens. Never thought I'd see the day. Flyers have been irrelevant for so long that their fans seem to have built some respect for the Pens lol

I think the world is coming to an end. Seriously, like fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! 40 years of darkness! Earthquakes, Volcanoes, The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice, Dogs and cats living together, MASS HYSTERIA!

It's a great forum. I hung out there last season for a bit a few times for various non on ice reasons and we got along great.

Steigy had a little smugness that I found off-putting. But he and Lange together were what I consider the golden days. Lange had so much admiration for the game, and called Pens moments with a little wink to the audience, like he'd peeked behind the curtain before showtime.

Obviously nostalgia is at work here but Lange truly heightened the Mario era.
Lange was one of the GOAT radio voices the NHL has ever had. Really iconic.

I never got the complaining that the commentators are biased though. They should be biased. I don't want to listen to 60 minutes of a schmuck pretending this is some detached analysis. People just want to say a broadcaster isn't a homer so they can have a dumb message board cudgel for this site or another site filled with equally gullible idiots.

Mears is just dull. At least he isn't Steigerwald who stunk at his job all the way around.
This is the biggest sin of any broadcast personality, which is, namely, that Mears doesn't have one.

Just calling the game is not what I want from my team's PBP guy. Need to spice things up over an 82 - 110 game season.
Comedy, tidbits, history, intelligent contributions to discussions with partner, clever ideas, passion, some goofiness, hot takes, occasional angry outbursts...

Know what I mean? More like a human being, not an android.
Steigy just contributed so much more of the human element to broadcasts. Added some layers. He gave Errey a lot more to work with.

I don't want either one, but yeah...
I feel like there's a better replacement available out there for sure.

It's not like Mears' voice and calls are particularly high level anyway. He's not bringing much to the table here.
How much of those things come more with experience than anything else. Maybe send Mears to Wilkes to season up a bit.

Addendum, for the record: Errey is like 4x the color commentator Bourque is. I like the Ol’ 29er as a person, but he’s pretty mediocre.
Bourque needs Lange bad.

Out of all the now-retired players from the cap era of the Pens, which do you think would be the best commentator? I think we can do better than Colby.

I bet Bobby Farnham would be entertaining on the mic.

Borque is good for calling it how it is though. He rails into pens players when they mess up. He went on a good 5 minute Letang one last year. Doesn’t try to sugar coat it or anything. It’s fresh to hear.

Everyone talking about Karlsson being old at 33 and having 4 years left on his contract like Lidstrom didn't come after the lock-out as a 35 year old and score 80 points and win 3 more Norris Trophies.

Not the same player, but hey, that Swede, Swede blood does run through both of 'em.

I'm too lazy to read the whole thread so apologies if this has been covered, but has EK65 said anything publicly yet?
