Cap is set to increase and the real years that matter are the next two, anyway. So I don't really get worrying about saving more on the EK contract especially if more assets that this team can't really afford were at stake.

Rutta is just fancy Ruh. And perhaps this way we can get a better look at some of the younger guys on the third pairing and they'll be a breath of fresh Air... Bud.
I don't see Ruh in the top 6. I have a hunch Carter will get moved.
First, we have like a hunerd bottom 6ers. Second, dk mentioned numerous times last season about Carter always being the first out of the locker room. Sure some of it was him not liking the media or whatever. But one has to think his role played a part. After averaging 58%, and topping out at 63%, oz starts in LA then coming here and averaging 37%, that had to piss him off and bruise his ego.
So he could be agreeable to moving on.

Moving Carter would launch this offseason into 2015 territory.

It's been nearly 4 months since the Tweet so I have to imagine this was bs at this point.

That account has no history of being accurate and is just a bitter hater.

Is it possible that changes are coming to the broadcast booth with the end of AT&T Sports? Sure. But it's going to take a report from someone far more credible for me to believe it.

When would a typical off-season broadcasting firing be come to light? Seems like it's too late for that.

Honestly, it varies. Mears was introduced as Steigerwald's replacement in May 2017, after AT&T Sports (then Root Sports) was done broadcasting games for the year. It was announced that Mike Lange was fired from TV in late June 2006. He was hired to do the radio broadcasts two months later.

There is also this complication: Mears and Errey are AT&T Sports employees. They are not employed by the Penguins. So there could be some legal wrangling over contracts as AT&T Sports shuts down.

For what it is worth, Mears is active on Twitter and has Penguins broadcaster in his bio.

I wouldn't be surprised if we hear a lot of confirmation by the end of the month or around Labor Day regarding where Penguins games will be broadcast and who will be in the booth.

I have literally zero issues with either of them.

I wasn't a huge Steigy fan so I didn't mind but I think Mearsy has done a really good job so I don't quite get why they would be getting the boot.

That said, I'm not a huge Ol Two-Niner fan so I hope this isn't true.

Not gonna bore anyone on the details of why I dislike Mears, because I've given them before.
But yeah, we have different tastes. I like listening to Bourque in pre-season games. He can call out garbage Pens play and doesn't try to sell unrealistic expectations with players and the team. He has a good sense of humor and still has boatloads of passion for the sport.
Not as smart as Errey, but he's not as stupid as some other color comms around the league either IMO. And I do think his voice is very good for TV/radio.

So what are they actually gonna do with the 4.25M they saved over the next 4 years?
They're not making the playoffs in any of them.

It's 4 years. That's a pretty bold claim. Say they buy out Granlund and trade Ruutta for a 3rd. That gives them $42-43M of cap space heading into the next offseason. +Potentially 3 firsts.

Besides, what would it have taken us to move the 2025 1st? An extra $2.5M/year? $3M? We need that pick. If we're going to contend this or next year, we'll have some need identified at the deadline. If we tank this year or next year, we need that high pick.

I think I actually liked Steigy more. Mears voice is just so annoying. I’d watch every away feed if Sportsnet Now gave me the option.

Mears at least knows which players are which and doesn't go on long, meandering idiotic stories while there's stuff happening out on the ice. I thought he had a pretty annoying voice, too. But YMMV.

Getzoff is better than both.

Bourque is the best person after Colby in terms of media guys that talk about this team.

Colby would be a no brainer.

I seriously never understood any malcontent towards Errey. He was a great Pen and an awesome color guy. Just enough of a homer but really understood the game- even the modern game. Some of the old guys (our version of Madden with his scribble Pen) are nice enough, but just out of touch most nights.

Mears I could take or leave. He was way too vanilla for me and way too straight edge. Makes him an easy hire but also forgettable. If you could merge him and two niner that would be better than having to pick one or the other.

Steigy was brutal. But he represents a lot of our past moments so what can you do.

Need that pick for what? We won't be ready to ramp it up for playoff entry again until like 2030, if not later. By that time the pick will be 25+ and nearing the end of the allowable ELC period, if not past it. He may not even be on the Penguins anymore.
Similarly, what do Yager and Pickering do for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and when?

What we need are like 2026, 2027 and 2028 picks, so their development matches our ascension timeline.

We're not tanking this year or next year IMO. That's just not happening with the big 3 and Dubas being new on the job. Summer 2025 at the earliest is when the dismantling starts.

Those 1sts need time to develop to be impact players that get them into the playoffs.
The kind of picks they'll get for Granlund, Rutta and Hoffman usually turn into nothing, but maybe they get lucky I guess.
I don't have any faith in Grier's ability as a GM. He seems directionless. They only have 1 retention spot left for the next 2 years, so they can't go down that well much to help yield better returns.

Seravelli puts it into better words than I can.
