Geno can and should give up having to carry the puck at all times at age 37…Sid needs to sit him down lol…given that he’s probably going to have to be the goal scorer on that line if he plays with Smith and Rakell, he should be practicing his finishing and getting into open spots for an EK pass lol

Geno should be set up for success and energized this year. EK playing behind him most of the time (or Letang) means he is not the only guy on his line who can possess the puck for more than 2 straight seconds. Subtracting Zucker and adding Smith is a huge swing from terrible to very good defensively. And Rust can fetch his water bottle I guess. It would be much more ideal to have a rugged guy who isn't afraid of going to the net on his RW.

That would be the cherry on top, trading Rust for a guy like that.

moving him to wing would take care of that.

No, he’s too slow and not enough of a heavy forechecker most of the time to play wing in Sullivan’s system…he’s also a puck hound defensively and you want him roaming around there stealing pucks bc he’s like one of the best in the league at that…he needs to play center but he can let his wingers and EK carry the puck more

The more I let this deal settle in the more I like it. A Norris trophy winner that is younger than the core in exchange for a couple middle pairing guys, a 1st, a 2nd, and a B prospect is borderline "your best player for our bad players"

This year could be really fun.

I think you can remove the word borderline to be honest.

I mean only one team wins it all, so it’s actually more impressive to be optimistic than pessimistic. Anyone can just expect the worst, because that’s the likely outcome for most teams.

We have to look at what we consider a success or a meaningful season. If it’s always cup or bust, then you’re disappointed every year. Gotta find other things to route for. For me, it’s Sid and G finishing their careers here and enjoying the time they have left. Pushing for one last deep run is a bonus for me.
It would be pretty disappointing to never see Crosby-Malkin-Letang win another playoff round, especially since they've already gone 5 years in a row not winning a round. It's only going to be harder to do with each passing year, so I'm rooting for winning a playoff round this year.

Centered by... ?
Shit. Is it too late to get Granlund back?

SJ really has to hope for a meaningful rebound for both Granlund and Hoffman. Otherwise, they're not worth much. Montreal couldn't give Hoffman away last season at the deadline. And Granlund ... well ...

Realistically, all they got was the relieved cap space (which likely doesn't matter at they're not a contender in the next 3+ years), the real $$$ dollars saved (not sure on their financial situation), and the 1st rounder.
I think they will be like Beagle, Erikosson, and Roussel in Arizona. They were pretty well cooked but they didn't some bottom 6 lifting for the yotes.

I think Granlund can rebound "better than he was in Pittsburgh". Maybe not replicating his 64pt season but likely better than a 20pt (based on pace) season. I imagine they keep him this year and next and try to ship him out at 50% at the TDL. Hoffman is cooked. I think this is his last hoo-rah. But hey, at least it's in San Jose and not Winnipeg.
Alex Goligoski turned into Erik Karlsson for us.
Had to think it through but...damn, nice trade tree there!

Hedberg - Goligoski - Neal/Niskanen - Hornqvist/Spaling - Matheson - Petry/Poehling - Karlsson

That's a STRONG trade tree.
When is this presser
With Dubas? It was yesterday. Unless there's a new one today?

My thing is I felt it was a lateral move at best losing Zucker and getting Smith in the scoring department. We can argue that all day but the fact is it's minimal either way.

Karlsson wipes that all out as he creates more offense then anyone we could have brought in and makes everyone on our offense better.

Only thing we are lacking now is some forecheck and bite

If there were meaningful scores kept for people on here that were wrong about stuff... everyone would be like -879234786 or thereabouts.

Anyone who wants to attempt to rub anything in is a huge hypocrite. Unless it's obviously dumb takes like "Jordan Staal should take center over Evgeni Malkin." Feel free when it comes to lizard brained stuff like that.
my favorite self example of this is a facebook post that I said Kunitz should be benched and then he scored the 2OT winner vs Ottawa that night

Buddy if I sat here and tried to think of all the dumb takes I've had over the years... we'd be here a while. I thought Konstantin Koltsov was gonna be the next big thing. And that's probably one of the milder ones.

Point is... don't be afraid to have an opinion. Just try not to be a douche about it.

Wait, I just thought of something. Is Ruhwedel now our regular 3RD? Karlsson in, but both Petry and Rutta out.

Did we sign any other RD? Graves is LD and both Smith and POJ are lefties (though both can play RD).

And it actually started with an offensive defenseman going to San Jose: Jeff Norton.
Problem here is a technicality, considering, even though he was traded to bring Karlsson in, he wasn't actually traded for Karlsson.

Edit: Petry, DeSmith, 2nd 2025 and Legare for>>>> Mike Hoffman to SJS and Pitlick.

That had to happen first. Out of order, like the Brassard trade, this gets rejected.

Not that I'm aware of, at least not yet, Ryan Shea and Will Butcher are both lefties also.

Currently yes. Both FAs brought in so far are LDs. Dubas has talked about bringing in another free agent dman since they moved Rutta though. That doesn't necessarily boot Ruh out though given the money on the table.

Also another forward to replace Granlund.
