SJ really has to hope for a meaningful rebound for both Granlund and Hoffman. Otherwise, they're not worth much. Montreal couldn't give Hoffman away last season at the deadline. And Granlund ... well ...

Realistically, all they got was the relieved cap space (which likely doesn't matter at they're not a contender in the next 3+ years), the real $$$ dollars saved (not sure on their financial situation), and the 1st rounder.

Some suggest that they got out of EK's contract as some sort of amazing feat. While they did shed that contract, they just picked up some glorified cap dumps in the process with minimal value currently. In two years that might be nice but it's gonna take a lot more than two years for them to be relevant again. And here's another thing, next years draft isn't forecasted to be nearly as good or deep this years.

I just see the cap space they might garner in a couple of years as not overly meaningful. It's not like they're one or two pieces from winning anything. Retaining more and accruing more assets with a team going nowhere seemed more savvy and in the big picture far more consequential. Maybe ownership out there is frugal, who knows. But they hardly maximized their best asset.

There is a bonus to being a bad team. You get guys like Granlund and can give them more premium ice time so they can inflate stats and raise their value… they should do ok in the long run with asset recovery from this.

The current state of the main boards is that they had to lock a Crosby birthday thread because someone threw a tantrum that it wasn't fair not to wish everyone else who has a birthday today well.

I wish I were joking.

Humanity is boned.

Who cares, eat Arby's.

There are take my ball and go home people all over these boards.

The world has gone soft, be an internet bad ass

Not necessarily. Teams potentially interested in such players will also know they are getting inflated ice time which skews their likely production and will factor that variable in. Rutta for example will get a lot of minutes, I expect he'd bring back a 2hd or 3rd, I don't think he'll get much more than that .

Erik Karlsson's performance in 2017 ECF was one of the gutsiest performances I can remember. He carried that Ottawa team and had no business doing so.

I'm trying to think how this is going to look like. What I think is kind of interesting is that Geno has never had an elite defenseman playing behind him. Letang plays a majority of his mins behind Sid's line. EK lugging the puck could see Geno have a great year.

I just can't seem to find anything to really say about this.

This team could be anything from just underwhelming to a complete dumpster fire, and I don't think EK really changes that.

Went from barely caring about the season starting to really excited for the season to start. :)
Anyone poo pooing this as a Pens fan is ridiculous.

Last year we were sooo boring to watch I really contemplated how much energy I'd put into watching this year.

EK makes us at least more entertaining. That's all any of us could ask for.

To polish it off Granlund is gone. A double bonus

It would be pretty funny for Karlsson to give the Penguins 4 good years of play and then the Penguins get a 1st back for Karlsson in the last year of his deal.

I don't even think it's a farfetched scenario either. A 36 year old Karlsson at 50% retained in 2025-2026 probably brings back a 1st if he's still at least a good OFD.

Yep retain 50% for a solid 5 million caphit. Get a 1st + 3rd or some shit. Really felt like the sharks should have retained more and got more. I hope Dubas weaponizea retention like a boss when it's time to say goodbye to our competing days.

Yeah, that's a very strange takeaway from their fans. Like they're searching for a crumb of comfort in what looks like a humiliating capitulation. The only winner on the Sharks side was Hasso Plattner's wallet.

Imagine the return, after rampaging to the Norris with 100+ points, they would've gotten if they had been willing to sell Karlsson at 5.75M for 4 years. Likely a bevvy of multiple, unconditional firsts.

Now imagine SJS also throwing a second/third/mid level prospect to a third team to eat another couple of million, and suddenly they can offer EK at 4-5M to any contender, offering to take back an equivalent salary. The bidding war would've dwarfed every other trade saga we've seen in modern times, as like 15 teams would've been grabbing a bunch of picks, prospects and a 4-5M player from their roster and getting in line.

I feel sorry for Grier. The Sharks could've turbocharged their rebuild by selling off a HoFer at the height of his value. Instead, Grier has to hope and pray its a sellers market this spring, and that Granlund, Rutta and Hoffman dont play like complete ass for them.

I definitely do think Grier was instructed by the Owner to limit retention which limited the return.

if Shark fans are happy i wont rain on there parade but this is a lot less than they expected.

Ignoring the fact that they don't have cap space to sign anyone else, why would Tatar sign with the Pens? If he's taking a cheap contract to try again next year, he's going to want to go somewhere that can give him prime minutes so he can pump his numbers. Great, he gets 10 games with Crosby or Malkin while Jake is out. Then what? 70 games getting 70% d-zone starts with Lars Eller?

Be the #1 option during any top 6 winger injuries. Guranteed spot in top 9 basically.

:)

They did OK for what they retained. Which was practically nothing.

Sometimes it works out fine for all parties involved.

I mean only one team wins it all, so it’s actually more impressive to be optimistic than pessimistic. Anyone can just expect the worst, because that’s the likely outcome for most teams.

We have to look at what we consider a success or a meaningful season. If it’s always cup or bust, then you’re disappointed every year. Gotta find other things to route for. For me, it’s Sid and G finishing their careers here and enjoying the time they have left. Pushing for one last deep run is a bonus for me.

The more I let this deal settle in the more I like it. A Norris trophy winner that is younger than the core in exchange for a couple middle pairing guys, a 1st, a 2nd, and a B prospect is borderline "your best player for our bad players"

This year could be really fun.

I want them to finish here too, but that'll just get me attacked by the "YOU IDIOT! YOU SELL THEM WHILE THEY STILL HAVE VALUE!!! WHY DO YOU WANT TO HOLD SID BACK WHEN HE COULD WIN A CUP WITH MACKINNON?" types.

If there were meaningful scores kept for people on here that were wrong about stuff... everyone would be like -879234786 or thereabouts.

Anyone who wants to attempt to rub anything in is a huge hypocrite. Unless it's obviously dumb takes like "Jordan Staal should take center over Evgeni Malkin." Feel free when it comes to lizard brained stuff like that.

Now think of it in better terms.

A 2nd for a 3rd swap.

Then Legare might not even be a B prospect. Guy probably never makes the NHL and if he does it will be 4th liner.
