That could be true.. kind of think need to make a trade or two to upgrade at the trade deadline anyways.

Depending on where they are... for sure. Assets will be thin, though. But then again lately they always are. And it didn't stop Dubas from landing the Norris winner for a big bucket of whatever.

Well, sure, but he's gonna be. I don't think it necessarily stops them from signing Suter, though, because I'd rather have Suter in every other area of the game.

I did forget Carter's other positive impact of winning OT faceoffs (j/k).

I swear if they keep jamming him out there for OTs and ENs for/against this year Imma lose my shit.

Like I get it... they think he can win every clutch FO that ever existed. But it rarely works out that way and half the time even when it does they immediately shit their pants trying to control the puck when his old ass can't get where he needs to go and/or get off the ice fast enough for the change.

My position is all things considered with the numerous problem contracts that were on this roster. Jeff Carter is easily the one that was smallest of issues. Worst case it’s 1 more year of him here, maybe he thrives more at this stage of his career in a 4 C role? Who knows… also a lot of time still left to see what shakes out with him. The fact that KD mopped up all the shit that was splattered around this franchise, if the season started today, is quite frankly a miracle.

This also potentially pushes the Pens window of being at least a playoff team further as well. Karlsson is 33 and defensemen like him have a history of aging more gracefully than any other player archetype. Gonchar was great for Pittsburgh til he was 36. Lidstrom was elite until he was 40. Letang had one of his best seasons at 34/35.

As an aside, it’s funny to me that Dubas went from trying to get Karlsson in TO to trying to get him in Pittsburgh and it still took over a month. That also lends credence to what was floated by the Athletic Bois that bringing in EK was part of his initial pitch to FSG which is cool.

I'm so curious as to how the PP is going to work, because with a move like this, it has to change. If the puck isn't going through Karlsson Sully and crew is all the way f***ing up.

Ek this summer, Matthews next summer?

Yeah, I'd rather Jeff Carter f*** all the way off back to California and never be seen again. But since the team's probably not of like mind, play him like 8 minutes a night in sheltered 4th line minutes with an emphasis on PP2 time. /shrug
Daddy Carter scores 20 goals this season; trust.

How did this dude actually acquire Erik f'n Karlsson? I remember when Matt Cooke destroyed EK's Achilles tendon.

Now he plays for us? Unreal.
Rick Tocchet broke Troy Loney's jaw like badly in a fight in 92, less then 2 weeks later they were teammates and won a cup, Steve Downie tried to snap Crosby's leg in like 5 places when he was in Tampa, he ended up here. Hockey is an odd sport.

But to answer your question: Cooke said it was an accident and just a board battle gone horribly wrong and one of them tripped over the the other and Cooke just naturally put him foot down for balance, not knowing where EK's ankle was, EK also backed this in his interview, Melnyuk was the one who went bonkers over it and attempted to launch a "forensic investigation with medical experts" over it, whatever the hell that meant.

I'm just reviewing (with a massive smile on my face) the first few pages of the thread. Cant put a price on that kind of joy. And it didnt even dawn on me until now that.....

-We kept our one young Dman who is a lineup regular (POJ)
-We kept the young Dman who is on the fence, in terms of potentially making an impact this year (Smith)
-We kept the young Dman we had just drafted, who everyone on the trade board was automatically including in any deal (Pickering)

In addition to not giving up Yager. Again, just an absolute coup from Dubas, on paper.

And for those worried about carrying 10M in salary on one player: we once again have ~20M in cap space next year, and can use that to reup Jake, POJ and Nylander, even accounting for the Jack Johnson buyout money and Petry's retention. We're going to be fine, financially.

18.8m (per capfriendly) across 9 players (or 8) isn't a lot though. It sounds good but the money disappears fast. Guentzel would conservatively take it down to 11.8m - possibly more like 10m - across 8/7 players, which point you're doing a lot of bargain shopping.

It's not fatal but it's tight, and I think that there's a good chance they try to move one of Pettersson, Rakell, or Rust next off-season.

Im pretty sure Nejdelkovic is the backup. And might be risky to send him through waivers. But if push comes to shove, we can go with Hellberg. Stats last season are damn near identical, on the same team none the less., and Hellberg only makes 785k. Ofc sending Nejdelkovic down will not cover hos whole salary, but if i got it right 1.1m will come of the books, and we still pay 400k on the NHL roster. But hellberg 785k+400k penalty is only 1.185m instead of 1.5 if we keep Nejdelkovic.

I'm tempering my expectations. Plus I suspect he'll be focusing a bit more on defense this coming season.
I wouldn't be surprised if that 1) wasn't true, and 2) wouldn't matter anyway. Much of Karlsson's struggles the last couple of seasons is more on the dreadful team around him than him. He was asked to try to win many games pretty much singlehandedly, so naturally he biased offense and we know that can result in defensive gaffe highlights. When the game script was decent he tended to look and perform fine on defense, let alone any potential improvement in personnel around him.

But what's crazy about the 101 point season is it actually should have been much better. The Sharks forward corps was *god awful*. There was an alarming number of players in the top 9 for whom replacement level would be a generous rating. There were countless numbers of insane sauce or carom passes placed right on forwards' sticks in stride that they were just too pluggy to turn into even a scoring chance. And his rate dropped off once Meier got traded.

PPG+ wouldn't be surprising if he hits stride.

never underestimate the sully.

Real question... EK has appeared in 920 career games, does he get the same ceremony for 1000 that 87, 58, and 71 have gotten
any excuse to have a party is a good one.

Also we gave up a meh prospect we drafted in the 3rd round, plus a lot of nothing contracts. Even if Karlsson disappoints, it was a fair to great deal.
