I still say that zone starts are over-rated. WIth that stat, you still have to consider that it's even a fraction of how a players starts his shift as well. I think the game is too dynamic for that to be a major consideration.

I'd still love to get a 3rd line that has a scoring punch. Then make the 4th line a heavy defensive line. Maybe one of the things that comes out of the Jake injury is someone like Puustinen knocking it out of the park. Then you can run something sexy like:

Jake-Sid-Rakell
Smith-Malkin-Puustinen
Tatar-Accari-Rust
DOC-Eller-Nieto
Over the course of a full season, it adds up.

There's also everything else that comes along with it like quality of linemates and competition.

Karlsson is a player with a recent history of injury shortened seasons coming to the team with the most man games lost over the last two decades.

Injuries could definitely play a key role on his production. For the whole team for that matter whose stars are all in their mid-30s

Over/Under on playing 55 games?
Honestly don’t care about injuries as long as we make the playoffs and are healthy going in.

Injuries does come down to what Sully expects and line mates.

If you have someone to dig into corners for Sid/Geno, they will stay healthy.

If you gave someone do the hard D stuff for EK and Letang, they will stay healthy.

Letang likes to bang back on D but he should temper that.

So….
A. I love this trade.
B. They may be 80k over the cap right now, and may have to send a guy down to start the season, but once tge season starts they can LTIR Jake and be six million under the cap. If he misses a couple of months of the season that will open up a lot of cap space at the deadline …

They are done unless something pops up. Makes sense, pretty much used up their trade capital unless they want to be known for trading away newly signed players.

Tatar is probably off the board considering. But I'll hold out hope for Kane in Nov./Dec.

Dubas said they are still looking at remaining free agents and may bring som guys in on PTO’s. He specifically mentioned having to replace Granlund. I think Tatar may be a real possibility to be honest

I don't think Tatar makes sense as a replacement for Granlund, I think Suter is the one that makes sense.

The real areas they need to replace Granlund are on special teams. They don't have a viable center for the #2 PP unit and they likely need another PKing center unless they split up Acciari and Eller. Tatar doesn't offer that but Suter does.

Uh sir... have you met the legend Jeff "The Other Other Piece" Carter?

But they will have to be willing to sign for practically nothing. Maybe Tatar sees this team as having that potential to forgo getting a regular payday. They can't bring in anyone for 2.0/3.0. Jake will be back eventually.

You're probably right that Carter is going to stick on those special teams units. I thought Granlund bumped Carter off of the 2nd PP unit last year after being acquired, but I was wrong and both were on the 2nd PP unit last year.

I don't mind Carter on the PP but really don't want him on the PK.

The problem wasn't and still isn't Jeff Carter the player. It's how he's been used.

Stop treating the guy like he's some sort of clutch hockey wizard that needs force-injected into every critical game situation and it's all good. As a 4th line and occasional HS player who can still help out PP2 with that shot of his... he'd be fine.
Carter is 38 years old will be going on to 39... so is a problem... meaning needs to hang em up.. Maybe find a coaching job. It use to be those kind of veterans helped a team but the league has progressed into a faster transitional game and the playoffs have progressed with a lot of interference these days.

Dubas said they were only expecting Guentzel to miss 5 games and wouldn't even put him on LTIR.

f*** you Willy, I was so excited to go "lol Jeff Carter" and you're just right there in the next post before I get a chance.

But, uh, for reals, yeah, Jeff Carter. And if he's going to be on the team, then PP2 C is actually going to be the thing he does best. PP2 last year was real good and I think Carter's face-offs and net front/shooting was a big part of that. It's not that Carter can't play hockey when the game comes to him, it's that the legs aren't up to feeding a corgi, nevermind a wolf.

The PK bit I'm less enthusiastic about but they can split Eller and Acciari - and I suspect probably would, Eller and Reilly Smith & Acciari and Nieto - and if they start feeding DOC into the mix, he can take some faceoffs. And, well, if they do use Carter there, he is only merely quite bad, not absolutely awful... and would probably use him there regardless of having Suter.

I do like Suter more for should Sid/Geno get injured tho.

Same. He's a RH and that's good in the circle but I don't think he has the tenacity or footspeed to be a good PKer.

I don't disagree but it seems clear he's gonna be on the roster because of his ass deal that was gifted to him for no good reason by our illustrious goof of a previous GM. So better to at least try to exploit what he can do. Which is still shoot the puck really well and win some draws with his advantageous handedness.

If they'd stop treating him like prime Ron Francis and play him to his remaining strengths while sticking him on the bench for ~30ish games to save his legs it would probably be fine.

I posted this in the salary cap thread but I also expect Rust to be a regular PKer next year. He was 2nd highest in PK TOI last year among forwards and I imagine that will continue next year.

I think the PK units will have one of Eller, Acciari and Carter with one of Rust, Smith and Nieto, at least when healthy. At that point, you don't even need to replace Granlund on the PK.

That could be true.. kind of think need to make a trade or two to upgrade at the trade deadline anyways.
