Knowing the Pens, someone is always injured, too. Hextall seemed bizarrely reluctant to put anyone on LTIR. Dubas isn't.

Dubas also regularly did those paper transactions to send guys down to the AHL to open up cap space whenever he needed to. Granted it's harder to do that with Pittsburgh/WBS versus Toronto/Toronto, but still.

I'm not even remotely worried about being $80k over the cap with a 22 man roster. They can make that work easily.

Those paper transactions are definitely a tad easier when your AHL team is literally two miles down the road.

But I think that's why he brought in a variety of guys. A player comes up for a game or two, goes down when there are a couple days off, and the next guy comes up for a game or two. It's a lot of shuttling back and forth, but eventually you've cleared enough space and you give a guy a longer run.

I am quietly fascinated as to how good defensively Karlsson can be when he wants to be. We all know a lot of defence is simple will. We've all seen a number of players with deservedly dodgy defensive reputations who could really turn it on if needed (one might call it a Pittsburgh Penguin speciality).

He's had glittering defensive stats in 4 out of 6 playoffs. He's killed penalties regularly. I dunno about you, but I don't recall thinking "wow who's this defensive bum in 2017".

I don't think he's going to be great regular season, but if we make the playoffs...
Your 100% correct you would think EK is a plug the way some people talk about him. His hockey IQ is elite. His positioning is very good. He is great at getting the stick on puck.

The guy can play defense and transition it into offense rather quickly.

The ones saying he can't play defense clearly have not watched EK play. Is he elite defensively.....no but he can definitely play

But who is PKing? Letang/Graves and then,…
Think a logical choice and pick the opposite.

Is Hextall had orchestrated this trade, he would have retained 50% on both Granlund and Petry, and then cut Malkin to become cap compliant (all with Sully's blessing)

Assuming they make the playoffs (and are healthy) they could theoretically have one of Letang or Karlsson on the ice every minute of the game

We would have traded Letang (while retaining 50%) and gotten Hoffman and Pitlik while EK went to Montreal. We’d have kept Granlund and Petry

This is amazing. Better than I thought it would be even. Only 1.5 retained is a little disappointing but I wasn’t expecting to clear most of petry and all of granlund in one go. And we only gave up a 1st and traded down a 2nd. All good things.

Karlsson is definitely not as bad defensively as advertised. Playing on a crap team and being by far the best defensively is good enough for me. Not to mention his minutes will get notably easier, especially against teams that don’t have great depth. He can turn it on when necessary and it will just be even more exciting during the regular season.

Very interested in seeing if sully is willing to make the system a bit higher tempo defensively now that we have multiple elite puck movers and defensively responsible forwards. Especially since we’ve gotten notably softer and notably faster. We don’t have a protect the net kind of team in any way.

PP1 should be a non issue. The answer is so obvious even silly will eventually do it. Just hope it doesn’t take too long. Surely any coach is happy to have 2 D out there? Even more so when it’s the best decision for the offense too.

Rutta was a luxury on the 3rd pairing and didn’t add enough of anything to make him not expendable. We’ll be completely fine without him.

And if we're picking up a winger or targeting let's look for a winger of need. Someone who has some resemblance of toughness and tenacity with skill.

Not some soft fill in ala Heinen, Tatar. If we accept mediocrity that's what we get in the results.

That is exactly how Chicago won their last cup in 2015. In the cup clinching game in the finals that year, their bottom pair of Timonen-Rundblad played 3:30 while the game went to overtime.

That's why Ruhwedel on the 3rd pair isn't a problem. Run that top-4, especially Letang and Karlsson, into the ground. They have the ability to do that. They can especially limit Ruhwedel to purely PKing duties by double shifting Letang and Karlsson with POJ, which makes POJ have more regular minutes.

Kinda broken hearted that Mark Madden blocked me on Twitter X. Anyway if nothing else the team will be fun to watch this season. We just need to find out whom will be the whipping boy though.

As an aside, it's a very small sample size but Karlsson actually had really good numbers on the PK last year:

-GA/60rel: -2.39
-xGA/60rel: -2.85
-GF%Rel: +26.52%
-xGF%Rel: +11.31%

I imagine Ruhwedel plays on the 3rd pair and mostly eats minutes on the PK, but I think you may see Karlsson PK a bit because he has shown to be good at it.

The team will be fun to watch and might even win some games if Sid, Geno, Letang and EK all stay healthy for 80 games….odds of that happening: .01 % lol

We have no one on this team who can competently sub in for any of those and it’ll turn into a shitshow when Jeff Carter and Chad Ruh have to sub in the top six and top four respectively because of injuries…

WOMP WOMP

And I thought the premier game Pittsburgh-Chicago was very interesting before the Karlsson trade now i feel like a little kid again waiting for something.
I had just started talking with a ticket rep last week to try to sweet talk my way into getting a four-or six-pack of games that would include the home opener. Last message from his was “… there may be a way, let’s talk Monday.” Now I know there’s no way in hell. :( I was hoping to get an actual physical ticket stop as a keepsake of the Bedard debit.

Hoffman is coming in from Montreal. I'm honestly not at all familiar enough with his situation to comment. And yes that's not a bad plan... if SJ can pump his numbers a bit he could maybe be flipped at the TDL. Perhaps by then Hextall will be employed somewhere and you could even get a second round pick!
Don’t forget that San Jose wouldn’t have to retain any money either!
