So, if Jakes on LTIR we should have what nearly six mil in space? Obviously we don't want to use all that up because that'll put us in a bad position down the road. But in the mean time we could get Tatar for maybe one year at 2.0 mil? At least that'll help mitigate Jakes loss.

I take it Pens are no longer looking at Hanafin?

And I thought the premier game Pittsburgh-Chicago was very interesting before the Karlsson trade now i feel like a little kid again waiting for something.
Bedards debut is going to be wild.

He lost the PP1 unit while fit to Justin Schultz. Only for little bits, but he did. Ice time looks like he might have lost a few games here and there to Petry too.

And Erik Karlsson is a far different beast to those two, and he's here because the team think he should wear a cape too.

Part of it also depends on Letang. I don't think Letang was happy about losing PP1 time to Schultz back in the day, but I think he's a different guy now. Sees a bigger picture. It's not like he won't still be incredibly important.

I don't want to make predictions on how it will go... but how it can go, I don't think they're necessarily locked into Letang on PP1 come what may. Not with it like this.
Why can't PP1 have both? Karlsson/Letang/Crosby/Malkin and then pick a new net front guy while Guentzel is hurt.

Most likely scenario, just throwing around what happens if it doesn't work.

I would add that I think it's probably better for the team for Letang to cede that spot to Rakell or Rust - who are probably roughly as good as him in that spot - and having an extra two minutes at 5v5/the PK/not having his legs skated into dust - anyway.

That's because he put up 64 5v5 points and negated the goals against. How many is he gonna put up this year?
He averages 12 EVG's and 19 EVA's per 82 games. 31 even-strength points total.

So if he goes back to his norm it's gonna be difficult to mask his deficiencies. He's gonna need a lot of help from Petts/Graves, Jarry/Ned and the Forwards defensively.
He will either play with Graves or Petts, both are very good at handling tough QoC and heavy minutes. Also, he is going to get sheltered, so he will be starting behind Geno a ton. Letang will still handle the heavy defensive assignments.

There is no reason for anyone to be upset about this deal, it's amazing for us, and just what Sid and Geno need at this stage of their careers.

The whole roster has now been set up to shelter and make Sid and Geno successful. The only wart is Rust, but if he is sheltered even he can be marginally useful.

I would say an offensive 1D is always going to be hurt more by being on a bad team than aided. He's getting those minutes more or less anywhere he goes. He's not necessarily getting good team mates. Good team mates are worth a lot more than

I wouldn't regard the Sens or Buffalo last year as bad teams. Kind of mediocre. Certainly not shockingly bad. They're not trading their 2nd highest pacing scorer at the deadline with no forwards over 70 points.

Karlsson being at 65-70 points would make him identical to Kris Letang in '22, a season where we only had half a season of Malkin. Karlsson is very clearly a better offensive player than Letang and he is going to get Letang's usage, close enough. He should be higher. If he's not around ppg, there's a good chance something has gone wrong.
Well we'll see. Maybe I'm underestimating him and he'll get 100 again.

Ignoring the fact that they don't have cap space to sign anyone else, why would Tatar sign with the Pens? If he's taking a cheap contract to try again next year, he's going to want to go somewhere that can give him prime minutes so he can pump his numbers. Great, he gets 10 games with Crosby or Malkin while Jake is out. Then what? 70 games getting 70% d-zone starts with Lars Eller?
Other people will get injured.

Sullivan gots to go!

It is a good trade. The only assets we lost that are worth anything are the 2024 first (obviously), and the 2025 second. Obviously, we had to give that second one up to park Petry somewhere. Not crazy about retaining on him for the next two years but whatever. Dubas was able to move out Granlund, Petry, DeSmith and Ruutta all in the same deal. We acquired a $10 million cap hit and created cap space. We acquired a veteran defenseman and got younger at the same time. Overall, I give Dubas an A here.

I think Pitlick might be a bit of a sleeper in this trade. He has shown flashes both in Minnesota and Montreal. Very versatile. I think he is like O'Connor but I think Pitlick has more offensive upside. I could see Pitlick taking Guentzel's role at the start of the season.

I really hope Sullivan gives Joseph-Smith a shot on the third pairing. Ruhwedel is a waste of a roster spot.

I would say Montreal won this trade, but Pittsburgh is second. Montreal traded Pitlick and Hoffman for Petry (with salary retention), DeSmith, Legare and a 2nd in 2025! What a trade for Montreal.

Good trade for the Pens, though. Karlsson's impact is the key, obviously. Sharks are the clear losers in this one...Granlund and Hoffman. Oouf.
